Floating Boat

...Isael Tore Science Experiment Rubber-Band Powered Altoids Boat 5th Grade Teacher: Mrs. Gainous Problem The purpose of my project was to find out which rubber-band powered Altoids boat would work better? My project consisted of two boats one small boat and one large boat. Hypothesis I predict that the small boat will propel the longest time. My prediction is that the small boat will work better because of less weight and size difference. My prediction of the large boat is that it will not work out due to size and weight. Procedures 1. Initial step gather all materials together. 2. Have a large space for water for example at home you can use the bath tub ready to place your boat tin in. 3. Next you begin to glue to Popsicle sticks on the right and left sides of the Altoid tin. (note: allow a few minutes for drying) 4. The following step consists of placing the rubber-band on the end of the Popsicle sticks to create the propeller for the boat. 5. Next you will turn the rubber-band holding the plastic propeller. 6. The final thing to be done is place your boat in the water for a minimum of 3 trials. Results My experiment resulted in my hypothesis being wrong. During the 3 trials of the of the small Altoid tin boat was as follows the boat only propelled for about 3 inches and stopped propelling each time immediately. The regular Altoid tin during the 3 trials propelled...

Small Boats for Sale

...Small Boats for Sale Today, there are more people seeking after a wide variety of small boats for sale which are intended for different uses. According to those who love boat sailing, owning a pleasure boat can be one of the nicest luxuries in life regardless it is just a small boat; little can compare to cruise over the deep blue on a beautiful sunny day, where the mist hits your face as birds fly by off in the distance. As there are a wide range of small boats for sale, we need to understand what uses the small boat is intended for before buying them. A small boat that is intended for use on a river or lake will be different from a small boat that is intended for use on the open sea for activities like fishing or diving. So when searching through small boats for sale, the choice you made will depend on what sort of boating you intend to do. For instance, small fishing boats for sale can be used on rivers/ lakes or even out to sea for people to go fishing. A small boat like this will often have quite a flat bottom and lots of deck space for people and equipment. Besides, small sporting boats like kayaks and canoes are operated by a single person and are used as a pastime and for competition on various waterways around the world. This shows that small boats varied from one another depending on their uses we intended for. Buying a boat is a much more complex undertaking than buying a car. The Open Boat

...nature. Your struggle may be as little as trying to change a tire in the middle of a rain storm or as severe as expressed in Stephen Crane’s story The Open Boat. From the beginning of time man has pondered the question as to “Why was I placed here on Earth?” We tend to see ourselves as being important, that we have to leave our mark in order for life to have some sort of meaning. In this story, four men, known simply as the captain, the oiler, the correspondent, and the cook, become stranded in the sea in a small boat. Together they are forced to bare the torments of one of Mother Nature’s toughest challenges, the open sea. In this process these four men learn much about nature and just how little they are on Earth. One of the characters, the correspondent, comes to the realization that nature is indifferent despite the struggles of the individuals, “When it occurs to a man that nature does not regard him as important, and that she feels she would not maim the universe by disposing of him…” (para, 174). The captain, who is seen as a symbol of strength to the other men on the boat, has doubt as to whether they can make it to shore safely, “Then the captain, in the bow, chuckled in a way that expressed humor, contempt, tragedy, all in one. “Do you think we’ve got much of a show now, boys?” (para, 25). The men in the boat are still upset with what fate has dealt them and seem to have the same opinion that they are still in control of their outcome, “If I am going to be drowned----if...

The Open Boat

...In Stephen Crane’s “The Open Boat”, Crane demonstrates his idea that man cannot even attempt to best nature by the isolation and trials of the men in nature, the hardships that even the best of men face, and the lack of understanding of nature while isolated in the sea. Stephen Crane starts off the story by leaving the men in isolation from the world, a test, which they fail, if they could best nature without help except for their abilities as humans not connected to nature. The men, from the beginning of the journey feel despair. Even though they rowed for so long all the men discovered “that after successfully surmounting one wave you discover that there is another behind it” (Crane 604). The men knew from the beginning of the journey towards safety, that the waves in the sea, an example of nature, would best the men from its endurance. The men depended on the wind that nature provided them because they rode in a dingy that “man ought to have a bath-tub larger than the boat which” (603) they rode in. Second, the men cannot reach the shore by any means. Even though the “light-house had been growing slowly larger” (607), the men never reach the light-house. The lack of ability to reach the light-house shows that the men are not in touch with nature, in this case the sea, leading to their inability to reach the island. Lastly, the man cannot converse with the other men on shore, showing nature’s ability to disrupt man’s methods for communication. The men seemed dazzled and confused...

The Open Boat

...In Stephen Crane, “The Open Boat” there is four main characters an Oilier, Captain, Correspondent, and a Cook who formed a brotherhood in a time of crisis. Throughout the story the man encounters some good and bad experience but through it all they were able to maintain a strong brotherhood. The bond that the character had created allowed them to be rescued. The story reveals a tremendous amount of brotherhood throughout the story, but in order to appreciate the crew's challenge to achieve brotherhood one must first realize the diversity of people on the boat. The crew’s willingness to follow the captain orders display how brotherhood is first display in the story. They accomplished brotherhood by placing their trust in the captain to get them back to shore. Likewise, we see them display more brotherhood when they come together to make a sail. Due to the strong wind the crew devised a plan to use the captains’ jacket and one oar to create a sail. The captain place is confidant in their ideas to make a sail out of his jacket that allow them sail. The correspondent and Oilier shows brotherhood by working together after the build the sail and only had one oar. Near the end of the story the captain exhibits so true brotherhood. The captain, though injured, remains clear-headed and makes the decisions, which the others unquestioningly obey. However, the captain and the other crew members were struggling to swim to shore, but the captain unselfishly told the local man to help the...

The Open Boat

...Alec Orozco Mr. Tom Treffinger ENG 102-005 4 March 2015 Correspondent’s Epiphany in “The Open Boat” In Stephen Crane’s story “The Open Boat”, Crane seems to focus on the struggle of man versus nature. The struggle is shown throughout the whole story, but is most clearly seen when the correspondent seems to be on the verge of death. The correspondent begins to see how nature “views” humanity. The four men who are on the boat all start to see that though they may have worked hard to live their lives, nature does not seem to care who lives or dies. In “The Open Boat”, there are four men trying to survive on a small boat there believe is smaller than a bathtub should be (Crane, 339). This posed a problematic situation because the “waves were most wrongfully and barbarously abrupt and tall, and each froth-top was a problem in small-boat navigation” (339). During this trial in the four men’s lives, the correspondent begins to contemplate on various things about their situation and his own life. One of the correspondent’s thoughts is “’If I am going to be drowned—if I am going to be drowned—if I am going to be drowned, why, in the name of the seven mad gods who rule the sea, was I allowed to come thus far and contemplate sand and trees’”(350). The meaning behind this particular thought is the correspondent is wondering why he is living his life so long just to have it taken away for no real reason. Then the correspondent begins to ponder the death of “A soldier of the...

A boat cover ,when properly fitted, tremendously helps protect your boat investment. Below is a list of the benefits that a properly fitted boat cover can provide. o Keeps the boat clean from dust and debris o Repels water and...

The Open Boat And Desiree's Baby

...The Open Boat and Desiree’s Baby The main theme of Stephen Crane short story, The Open Boat is survival. There are several different sub themes throughout the short story. I was intrigued by this story because this astonishing tale is true. This author was indeed fighting for his life at sea. One of the thematic concerns is that the sea does not care if the men live or die. A singular disadvantage of the sea lies in the fact that after successfully surmounting one wave you discover that there is another behind it just as important and just as nervously anxious to do something effective in the way of swamping boats. (Ch.1) If I am going to be drowned -- if I am going to be drowned -- if I am going to be drowned, why, in the name of the seven...

3 Men in a Boat

...THREE MEN IN A BOAT By Jerome K.Jerome In the history of English literature Jerome K. Jerome occupies a modest place. He is famous for his art of story-telling, his vivid style and his humour which is generally expressed in laughter-provoking situations often based on misunderstanding. With sparkling humour he criticized the weak sides of human nature. Jerome Klapka Jerome was born in England on May 2, 1859 into the family of ruined businessman. Jerome's childhood was poor and sad. He could not finish school because his father died in 1871 and the boy had to begin working to support his family. First he worked as a clerk. Later he took up teaching journalism and acting. For three years he was an actor and had to play different parts. He had very little money and often went hungry and had no place to sleep.  In his free moments Jerome tried to write. He wrote plays, stories and articles, but nothing was published. His first literary success was a one-act comedy which was performed in the Globe theatre in London in 1886.  In 1889 a collection of his articles was published. They were published as a book under the title "The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow". This book became very popular in England, and it was published 105 times in 4 years.
