Culture means to cultivate, and comes from the Latin colere. Culture is generally all that complexity of ideas and actions that includes knowledge, art, beliefs, law, morals, customs and all the habits and skills acquired by man, not only in family, but also for being part of a society as a member. Each country has its own culture, which is influenced by several factors. Brazilian culture is marked by cheerfulness and joy, and this is also reflected in the music, in the case of Samba, which is also part of Brazilian culture. Taking that into consideration, we can say that many past cultures played a significant role in the whole world to create the cultures that we are currently making part of. The term civilization comes to appear more often and study of it is very important to today’s society. Undoubtedly, the study of ancient civilizations proves to be important for us to have a better understanding about the various features that our culture currently assumes. However, from another point of view, the study of antiquity also paves the way for us to oppose the values and parameters that were once common to some men and today appear so distant from what we live in, assuming that it is practically an infinite range of knowledge that applies to this historical period. Anyway, the Imperial world share some commonalities and differences with our own life ways generating than diverseness between the way we act and rules we must follow to play a role in society. There are some aspects of civilization and cities that are similar to the modern world but there are also differences. Also, technology is something that has grown rapidly and had an enormous impact in society over the years, which can also compared to our life …show more content…
Every civilization has its own characteristics; therefore, the scientists and researchers have much interest in revealing which civilization the findings are from. The term civilization can be defined as "the stage of human social development and organization that is considered most advanced". (Cultural Anthropology, Bodley) It has been proven over time, in European countries and in the United States that societies that have abnormally large upper and lower class citizens but hardly any middle class, do not function properly, at least not for long. Healthy, longer lasting societies tend to have smaller numbers of upper and lower class, while the majority is found in the middle class. The same would happen in the Imperial world, where the elite have absolute power over society creating then a gasp between the social classes. Also, they tried to organize society as they wanted to by doing whatever they thought it was convenient to keep their high-status positions. I believe that in today’s society the higher classes have somehow a control over the government but nothing compared to the Imperial World elite’s

Culture and Its Impact on International Business

...Culture and its Impact on International Business Introduction As businesses have grown and expanded to the international level; certain aspects of business have become abundantly clear. One thing that has become the norm when doing business on the international level is dealing with different cultures. Culture, as defined by Geert Hofstede is “the collective programming of the human mind that distinguishes the members of one human group from those of another. Culture in this sense is a system of collectively held values.” The concept of a culture has been around for a very long time; in-fact, when people exist in the same place together they end up following a set of rules. These rules can be called a “social norm” or culture and can be made up of simple things like how to act in certain situations all the way to a very devout set of beliefs or values. This paper will focus on the role that culture plays on multinational businesses around the globe and the differences that culture plays from one area of the globe to the next. An in-depth look will be taken on the obstacles that may arise due to culture, adjustments that need to be made, and any ethical conundrums that may arise due to different cultures. Literature Review D. Elenkov and d. Kirova, state that “MNCs should not underestimate the importance of the cultural specificity of the host countries because different staffing, selecting, training, motivating and compensating practices should be applied in accordance...

Cultural Analysis of Brazil and Denmark

...inheriting different national cultures. National culture can be defined as “historically evolved values, attitudes and meanings that are learned and shared by the members of a community and which influence their [...] way of life” (Tayeb, 2003, p.10). Hence, the crux for every international manager is to understand the differences in the ways employees, suppliers and clients think, feel and act in different business settings (Hofstede, 1997, p.4). International managers, being capable of managing this challenge, possess a set of intercultural competencies, allowing them to turn cultural diversity into a competitive advantage (Browaeys and Price, 2008, p.215). This information pack provides substantial information about Danish and Brazilian business practices. The subsequent analysis is based upon the theories of the Dutch anthropologists Geert Hofstede and Fons Trompenaars. In particular, Hofstede’s “Uncertainty Avoidance” and Trompenaars’ “Ascription vs. Achievement” have been applied. 2. Theoretical Background Hofstede and Trompenaar are proponents of the ‘etic’ approach. They hold that culture is linked to people’s values. Furthermore they argue that these values can be transferred into universal cultural characteristics. Underpinned by empirical and experimental evidence, both anthropologists developed their set of bi-polar dimensions. According to Browaeys and Price (2008, p.92) these dimensions serve to differentiate national cultures. Moreover they provide implications...
