Brecht was born Augsburg, Germany in 1898. He then attended university in Munich in 1917. It was while he was at university that he witnessed the Bolshevik Revolution which was the first event to influence him. Brecht wanted what had occurred in Russia to repeat itself in Germany as he saw all there was to gain from a Revolution. This was the first influence that gave Brecht his voice in social and political issues.
In 1918 Brecht was called up for World War 1 as a medical orderly. Here he witnessed some of the worst medical injuries created by the war. This experience made him an extreme pacifist. This was the second most influential event that took place which in turn caused him to be in opposition to those international opinionated political powers. He saw them as being capitalist populations, sending innocent men to be murdered meaninglessly, for their own efficient profitable gain. He felt misery as the human potential completely contradicted its entire meaning by the brute actions of humans around the world.
Marxism was the influence that gave Brecht hope that there was good within humans although some needed re-awakening. He had seen the Russian Revolution and witnessed the collapse of Germany after World War 1 and the fall of the Royal Family of Europe. This all influenced Brecht to write his first play Baal in 1918. This raw play and episodic structure was the youth of Brecht’s later well-known work, which inhabited a more grotesque quality. His work looks at the incapability one has to have power over the lust and greed in the world. He uses the element of shock in his plays as he relates to his yearning for change and fury at his experiences. It was this yearning to bring change via the use of shock that bought us epic theatre.
In 1922 Brecht went to Berlin and this experienced gave him the influence for all his later work. Here he observed real theatre and the cabaret, parts of theatre he never knew existed. This influence made him more culturally aware and gave him the knowledge to develop his work. Aesthetic theatre was influenced by expressionalism, the use of various scenes without any rational order. He discarded ‘Drawing room comedy’, realism and naturalism. Instead he took influences from Edwin Piscator whom considered theatre as a device for political education. Edwin Piscator used different means in which to convey his political message. He used news-real, projections and captions to portray the background knowledge of the play. He also used great chorus scenes, perceived in traditional Broadway or West- End performances, to demonstrate the significance of the play. Brecht took Piscator’s use of technology and political structure and he took the episodic form from expressionalism. Brecht used theatre to express the economic, social and political circumstances of humanity. His political mental picture was not to observe the waste of civilisation due to economic difficulty and social discrimination. Instead he saw an optimistic development into a new society having learnt from their errors.
Marxism was such a strong influence on Brecht that it runs throughout his theatre. In Brecht’s work actors played characters but remained actors and the stage became reality but stayed the stage. Marxism offered a political perspective that was equivalent to his theatrical form and gave Brecht a powerful sense of significance and importance.

...The Self According to Brecht In Brecht’s play “The Good Woman of Setzuan” we are introduced to Shen Te the prostitute and her alter ego Shui Ta, supposedly her cousin. Upon being pressured by her landlady Mrs. Mi Tzu for character references, Shen Te creates Shui Ta. In making these characters one and the same, Brecht attempts to show his disillusionment with a world in which he believes that it is impossible to be good and survive. He strives to show how it is possible to be moral, however in the struggle for survival within society morality often becomes the victim to what needs to be done. This conflict between morality and necessity is personified in Shen Te and Shui Ta. Shen Te, the good woman of Setzuan, is instinctively kind hearted and incapable of refusing to help anyone in need. In the beginning of the play, despite her poverty she gives up her client for the night in order to board the three Gods that need a place to stay. As a reward for her kindness, the Gods give Shen Te one thousand silver dollars “Isn't it true she might do better if she had more money?" (Brecht 1941) and she uses the money to buy a tobacco shop. She is immediately assailed by some of the townspeople for help, beginning with Mrs. Shin the previous owner of the tobacco shop and then by the elderly couple (who had first boarded her when she arrived in Setzuan) and their extended family who move into the shop. Whilst in the plays the protagonists’ obsession leads to the destruction of relationships with loved ones, in the novel a thwarted relationship leads the main character to develop dual unhealthy relationships with women. The first sees him obsessed with his lost first love and the second is a sexual addiction spanning more than 600 ‘conquests’. Whilst Mother Courage and Florentino are both driven by obsession, these vary in their focus. Mother Courage lives in the time of the Thirty Years war and runs her own cart selling wares to the armies to survive and support her children. This business and the pursuit of money becomes an obsession for her. On page 73, Scene 9 Mother Courage declares: “Sometimes I sees meself driving through hell with me cart selling brimstone, or across heaven with packed lunches for hungry souls. We condemn them, despise them, ridicule them, and even at times, wish to hurt them ourselves. Yet, in many popular books, movies, and songs, we cannot help but admire, sympathize, and forgive these criminals. The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht and Perfume, The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind are two great examples of this psychological phenomenon. Both texts reveal the cultural environment on one hand and human nature on the other as stimuli feeding the internal drives of these monsters. In The Threepenny Opera, the main protagonist, Mac the Knife, is introduced as a murderer, rapist, and arsonist. The opening scenes of Perfume begin with the explosive cheers of a filled stadium awaiting the death sentence of Jean- Baptiste Grenouille. Yet, upon further inspection, both characters emerge as charmingly crafty masterminds that win the love and affection of those around them. Similarly, as readers and viewers, we too find ourselves drawn to these characters, as did Brecht’s audiences and Suskind’s readers in the twentieth century.
