1. To have an online presence is to be visible on the web; a business will have a website set up for them and depending on what that business is about, will determine the function of that website. 2. There are a range of functions for a website, it may be to purely promote the company to a wider audience, it may be to offer extra support and advice for their existing customers, and they may also want to have part of the e-commerce market by selling their products/services to existing or new customers online. 3. E-commerce stands for Electronic Commerce, and it is a way in which businesses can sell their products or services on the Internet or through a computer network. It may also be known as e-business so a vital asset to the e-commerce system is the ability to exchange transactional data between the company and customers banks. 4. A good website has to primarily serve its target audience, there are many ways in which a website can go about this, it has to be clearly laid out and easy to get around, also it is no good if the site is full of jazzy images and in your face ad’s, it must give you the information you need and want to make the experience a pleasant one. The site must be secure so that you comply with the data protection act and the site must run quickly because one of the most frustrating things for the end user is when a site takes a long time to load. To make things easier for the user the website should invest in making sure that the site follows the wider company brand as this reduces any confusion and makes the end user experience more pleasant.
Task 1
The three sites I have been looking at serve different audiences, but the function of all three of them is to provide information and support to its users and update it when appropriate. The site which had the biggest visual impact was the Honda MotoGP site; it is well branded and has

The third little pig built his house out of bricks. One night the big bad wolf, who dearly loved to eat fat little piggies, came along and saw the first little pig in his house of straw. He said "Let me in, Let me in, little pig or I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in!" "Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin", said the little pig. But of course the wolf did blow the house in and ate the first little pig. The wolf then came to the house of sticks. "Let me in ,Let me in little pig or I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in" "Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin", said the little pig. But the wolf blew that house in too, and ate the second little pig. The wolf then came to the house of bricks. " Let me in , let me in" cried the wolf "Or I'll huff and I'll puff till I blow your house in" "Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin" said the pigs. Well, the wolf huffed and puffed but he could not blow down that brick house. But the wolf was a sly old wolf and he climbed up on the roof to look for a way into the brick house. The little pig saw the wolf climb up on the roof and lit a roaring fire in the fireplace and placed on it a large kettle of water. ...pray for her health to regain. The wind blew hard, and the rain poured, but the last leaf still remained, dangling bravely on the thin, wet branch. Meanwhile, Mr. Behrman, an old painter, poses for Sue’s new sketch. He always talked about his newest masterpiece, but he never manages to finish them all the way. Lesson or Moral of the Story: Never give up nor lose hope. Always have faith in yourself, in your family, and in the almighty God above. that we should always help our loved ones even if we have to face the worst things too. Imagery: There was only a bare, dreary yard to be seen, and the blank side of the brick house twenty feet away. An old, old ivy vine, gnarled and decayed at the roots, climbed half way up the brick wall. The cold breath of autumn had stricken its leaves from the vine until its skeleton branches clung, almost bare, to the crumbling bricks. Symbolism: The last leaf symbolizes life and death. Before winter came, the tree was full of green, luscious leaves. And as time passes by, the leaves decayed and fell. The last leaf remained strong, just like Johnsy, and it only fell when it knew it was Mr. Behrman’s time to go. Conclusion: In the...

...William Dillard founded Dillard’s Inc. in 1938 as a small store in his wife’s hometown. Mr. Dillard opened the store after working many summers in the retail industry and college. He also completed the management training course at Sears Roebuck and Company prior to the opening Dillard’s. His first store was located in Austin Texas. Over the years technology has been innovated and transformed how consumers shop. There are several different ways that the e-business can affect Dillard’s Inc., both internally and externally. Most consumers love to shop whether it is online or in a brick and mortar location. There are advantages, limitations, and risks of using the Internet for the business activities. Advantages One advantage of Dillard’s, being that it is an e-business is that consumers can shop online and not have to leave their home. Another advantage is that it removes location and availability limitations for customers. In store there are hours of operation, which will limit the times when consumers can purchase items. Being an e-business allows consumers to make purchases when and where they like. There are often more products available online than in the store because local stores usually have limited storage. “Bricks-and-Mortar” vs. “Clicks-and-Mortar”: an Equilibrium Analysis

...“Bricks-and-Mortar” vs. “Clicks-and-Mortar”: an Equilibrium Analysis Fernando Bernstein Jing-Sheng Song Xiaona Zheng The Fuqua School of Business The Fuqua School of Business Guanghua School of Management Duke University Duke University Peking University Durham, NC 27708 Durham, NC 27708 Beijing, China 100871 Forthcoming in European Journal of Operational Research The Internet has provided traditional retailers a new means with which to serve customers. Consequently, many “bricks-and-mortar” retailers have transformed to “clicks-and-mortar” by incorporating Internet sales. Examples of companies making such a transition include Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Barnes & Noble, etc. Despite the increasing prevalence of this practice, several fundamental questions remain: (1) Does it pay off to go online? (2) Which is the equilibrium industry structure? (3) What is the implication of this business model for consumers? We study these issues in an oligopoly setting and show that clicks-and-mortar arises as the equilibrium channel structure. However, we find that this equilibrium does not necessarily imply higher profits for the firms: in some cases, rather, it emerges as a strategic necessity. Consumers are generally better off with clicks-and-mortar retailers. If firms align with pure e-tailers to reach the online market, we show that a prisoner’s dilemma-type equilibrium may arise. History of Ceramics

...Ceramics is one of the most ancient industries on the planet. Once humans discovered that clay could be dug up and formed into objects by first mixing with water and then firing, the industry was born. As early as 24,000 BC, animal and human figurines were made from clay and other materials, then fired in kilns partially dug into the ground. Almost 10,000 years later, as settled communities were established, tiles were manufactured in Mesopotamia and India. The first use of functional pottery vessels for storing water and food is thought to be around 9000 or 10,000 BC. Clay bricks were also made around the same time. Glass was believed to be discovered in Egypt around 8000 BC, when overheating of kilns produced a colored glaze on the pottery. Experts estimate that it was not until 1500 BC that glass was produced independently of ceramics and fashioned into separate items. Fast forward to the Middle Ages, when the metal industry was in its infancy. Furnaces at that time for melting the metal were constructed of natural materials. When synthetic materials with better resistance to high temperatures (called refractories) were developed in the 16th century, the industrial revolution was born. These refractories created the necessary conditions for melting metals and glass on an industrial scale, as well as for the manufacture of coke, cement, chemicals, and ceramics. Another major development occurred in the second half of the 19th century, when ceramic materials for electrical...

...in Pompeii and Ostia). he Roman Architectural Revolution, also known as the Concrete Revolution,[4][5][6] was the widespread use in Roman architecture of the previously little-used architectural forms of the arch, vault, and dome. For the first time in history, their potential was fully exploited in the construction of a wide range of civil engineering structures, public buildings, and military facilities. These included amphitheatres, aqueducts, baths, bridges, circuses, dams, domes, harbours, and temples. A crucial factor in this development, which saw a trend toward monumental architecture, was the invention of Roman concrete (opus caementicium), which led to the liberation of shapes from the dictates of the traditional materials of stone and brick.[7] The Romans...

E-Commerce and the Threat of New Entrants.

...fell by 11.6%. These figures indicate that people are no longer wanting a hard backed book that they are preferring in a more ‘convenient’ form of being able to access them where ever they are on their phones, tablets an e-readers. New entrants from online businesses can pose a significant threat to traditional bricks and mortar business due to the benefits they provide customers and consumers- in terms of lower search cost, greater flexibility and convenience, and lower prices (as a result of lower cost). An example of this is the closing down of HMV/xtravision and the introduction of Spotify and deezer. In the year of 2014 music which was bought in stores decreased by an outstanding 14.2% that was a loss from 32.4 million to 27.8 million (albums) and 12.5 percent, from 356.5 million to 312 million (tracks). Whereas, the downloads from sites such as Spotify and deezer increased of an astonishing 34.7 percent rise, form 25.44 billion streams to 34.28 billion. Traditional Brick Is More Vulnerable in Earthquake

...TRADITIONAL BRICK IS MORE VULNERABLE IN EARTHQUAKE Dr. Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder The history of brick making is not known to me but nearly 2050 years ago temple were made of these traditional brick. Nowadays the style of making home is that the cement and sand is kept between two brick but previously it’s a clay that is kept between two brick. In ancient times the styles of roof were also different. It used to be flat tiles but nowadays concrete and steel are used for making the roof. In ancient times the tiles were also made up of clay mud after burning in the fire. Today in Bangladesh the size of brick is 9.5''X4.5''X2.75'' which is seen all over the country. This brick is kept one after another and make the wall. In between two brick the paste of cement and sand is being used as a binding material. The readers might think that all these things are earlier whenever we keep our eyes it is seen. What new to tell. My opinion is that year after year we are doing the same mistake to make our buildings in local construction practice by using those ancient clay brick. What is this mistake and to recover the mistake and doing appropriate work is not concerned by anyone. When I saw that one or two organization understood this problem and try to change the ancient brick use and to do something new and facing lots of criticism then there is no other way except being disappointed. honestly speaking when the use of clay brick started is not known to me but in some places some temples...
