The Bucket List
Corporate billionaire Edward Cole and working class mechanic Carter Chambers have nothing in common except for their terminal illnesses. While sharing a hospital room together, they decide to leave it and do all the things they have ever wanted to do before they die according to their bucket list. In the process, both of them heal each other, become unlikely friends, and ultimately find joy in life.
Edward (Jack Nicholson) is used to living a lavish life and it showed in the hospital scene. His personal assistant Thomas (Sean Hayes) comes every morning and makes him his usual espresso and is taking care of all his personal matters. Edward has the mentality that nothing bad happens to him and he seems to be in a state of denial about his cancer. He comes off at first as a not so nice person. As time progresses on we see a different side of him. He comes off cold to Carter in the beginning and it isn’t until the Bucket Lists come into play that they start to have a friendship.
Carter (Morgan Freeman) has lived a hard working man’s life, is married and has grown children. Carter seems like your usual family guy that has the supportive wire and family. He has a wife that wants to make sure that he has the best care he can get. He has come to terms that he has cancer and that his day may be numbered. He expects nothing more than what he had received as care at the hospital. Edward on the other hand expected to have his own room.
As we can see it bothers Edward in the beginning that he has to share a room with another patient. This time that they are forced to share will eventually create a bond that is life changing. Carter sees the things that he has done on the past and from what I see in the movie feels a sense of integrity. He knows that he worked hard to gives his kids what they wanted and they turned into great adults. Edward on the other hand talks about his failed marriages and a daughter that he doesn’t talk to. Once again these men are mentally in different places in life.
One night Carter starts putting his Bucket List together of things he would like to do before his final days. The next morning Edward finds it crumpled up on the floor and asks Carter what it is. Edward contemplated the idea and told Carter that he wanted to do these things and make dreams happen for Carter. Carter was very hesitant because he does have a wife and family and he was thinking of them, at first. After much talk Carter decides that he is going to take this journey with Edward despite the fact that is wife was WAY against the idea. Carter said in the movie, “I have worked under the hood for 45 years for everyone; I think it is about time I do something for myself”. At that moment in time he had realized that at this point of his life and with the terminal cancer that he needed to take Edward up on his offer. Edwards’s mentality was he wasn’t leaving anyone behind and he could go and blow all he wanted. As we see he did take along his personal assistant.
Up until the point that Edward was placed in the hospital I do not think that his lifestyle reflected his age. He felt young and free and full of money, even up to the time that he and Carter took off and Carter started talking to him about what his priority should be at this point in his life. The one thing in Edward’s life that he had not reflected on was his daughter. Carter talked to him as much as Edward would let him about the situation. Edward at times still comes off as closed off to Carter but what Carter doesn’t realize is he is taking his advice and storing it.
Cognitively at this point both Edward and Carter have mentally come to terms with the illness and are truly beginning to take in the experiences that they are taking together before their last days. They both have dealt with many emotions as they look back at the life they have lived. Dealing with the hard times of the past is something that Carter wanted to help Edward realize. He wanted to help Edward see the importance of having a relationship with his daughter.
Once they returned from their ventures they both looked at their lives in a totally different light. As we look at Edward, we see him make a giant step in a direction that no one would have ever thought he would. We see him standing outside a house and then see him go to the door. A young lady opens the door and invites him in. As he is in the house we also see a little girl that is Edwards’s granddaughter. The audience can see a major difference in the outlook that Edward now has. At this point we see the composition of Edward’s family change. It goes from Edward not wanting to just be a family that consists of him but to a man that knows that a family is more than one person. We also see a different attitude in Carter. He goes home to his wife and we see a different connection between them.
After it is all said and done, Carter just wants Edward to find the joy in his life. He feels so grateful for what Edward has given him. His gratitude for Edward shows that he is a humble man. Edward still shows some of his old ways, for instance he tells Thomas “nobody cares what you think” when he tried to tell Edward he was proud of him. This shows he still has a sense of pride that he may not be ready or ever be ready to let go of. He has to maintain the hard guy attitude because that is what he has always portrayed himself as.
Both of these men were in totally different mind sets when they met that day in the hospital. One was at peace and another not ready to except. Through the tender feelings of each other’s friendship and life stories they made a friendship that would forever change the rest of the years that they were alive. What a wonderful movie about reflection at this stage of life can do for a person.

The Bucket List

...The bucket list The Bucket List; what can I say? The Bucket List is a movie starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson about the exploits in life they never got to accomplish and set out to do so after discovering they were going to die. It is an interesting take on death and how to deal with death. It shows many different viewpoints on the subject of death not just from the view of Edward (Nicholson) or Carter (Freeman.) This movie really makes you think about how you live your life. The Bucket List was considered one of the most uplifting movies of the year. These men both view death in different ways. Carter in the beginning accepted death; if he did not accept death yet the movie would have been over fairly quick. You can tell he accepted death because he started writing his bucket list as a metaphorical contract that states he has given his life and is ready to die. However towards the end of the movie it seems Carter has no longer accepted death because he refuses to go back home to his family after starting the list. I think he feels this way because he thinks when he gives up on the list that will signify the end. Edward in the beginning does not accept death he refuses to deal with funeral arrangements and the passing down of his possessions. Towards the end Edward realizes that his life has been fulfilled not from completing the list but truly finding a lifelong friend in Carter. It makes you wonder how different these men’s lives would be if they were not to meet...

Hopefully as time flies by, I will accomplish my three main goals on my Bucket list. Hopefully my dreams and goals will come true and it will prove to other people in this world that having a bucket list can actually work. My three goals are to be scouted from college baseball scouts, have a nice home with six rooms and three bathrooms, and to be remembered for playing the sport that I love which is baseball. One of the accomplishments that I hope to achieve in my life is to be scouted by a college coach. Getting to play on a college team is very hard to achieve. There is an abundant amount of competition around looking for a chance to get scouted. Pipeline Parable

...the village. They were both bright and hard working. All they needed was an opportunity. One day that opportunity arrived. The village decided to hire two men to carry water from a nearby river to a cistern in the town square. The job went to Pablo and Bruno. Each man grabbed two buckets and headed to the river. By the end of the day, they had filled the town cistern to the brim. The village elder paid them one penny for each bucket of water. "This is our dream come true! "shouted Bruno. "I can't believe our good fortune." But Pablo wasn't so sure. His back ached and his hands were blistered from carrying the heavy buckets. He dreaded getting up and going to work the next morning. He vowed to think of a better way to get the water from the river to the village. Pablo The Pipeline Man: "Bruno, I have a plan," Pablo said the next morning as they grabbed their buckets and headed for the river. "Instead of lugging buckets back and forth for pennies a day, let's build a pipeline from the village to the river." Bruno stopped dead in his tracks. "A pipeline! Whoever heard of such a thing?" Bruno shouted. "We've got a great job, Pablo. I can carry 100 buckets a day. At a penny a bucket that's a dollar a day! I'm rich!. By the end of the week, I can buy a new pair of shoes. By the end of the month a cow. By the end of six months I can buy a new hut. We have the best job in town. We have weekends off and two weeks paid vacation every year. We're set for life! Get...

Hey!” Simon said, pulling out his smart phone. It was obvious he wanted to show us something. We said hi back, waiting for him to pull up what he wanted us to see. “You’ve been challenged on Facebook! Are you going to do it?” Breanne looked puzzled. “Do what?” she asked. “The ice bucket challenge!” Simon replied. People sitting at tables surrounding us all looked up and at us. One shouted, “Do it!” Allison said, “Well, we’ve been challenged, so we might as well.” She and I shrugged. Simon raised his arms in victory and walked away. Part 2: Drive home; conversation – We all struggled to pay attention during class that day. All we could think about was the ice bucket challenge. How cold would the water be? Would it hurt? Who would record us taking the challenge? Whom would we nominate to take the challenge after us? We talked about all this after school, driving in Breanne’s car to Allison’s house, a cozy ranch house off Keebler Street. Along the way, Breanne surprised us by suddenly swerving into the parking lot of our local Food Lion. Allison said, “Why are we st…” but trailed off, figuring out mid-question that Breanne was buying the ice we needed. We only bought ice. “Ice bucket challenge?” the cashier said, ringing us up. We all nodded. “We...

...ordinary night at the restaurant. I was situated on drive-thru, and was also scheduled to close that same position. As closing time rolled around I found myself bombarded with a plethora of tasks, and to accomplish them I needed to be able t! o access the sink. I walked over to the sink to find an enormous bucket filled to the brim with water and chicken. This bucket needed to be carried to the cooler for the night, but whoever left it there had forgotten about it and it remained in my sink. Well, instead of calling for my co-worker to carry the chicken to the cooler, I decided to take it upon myself and help them out. Looking back in hindsight, I now ask myself, “What was I thinking?” I hoisted the pail of chicken and water out of the sink and headed towards the cooler. As I approached the cooler I rested the bucket on a nearby shelf, and proceeded to pry open the heavy metal door. As the door opened I was greeted with a cool, clammy breeze. I entered the cooler and found that the floor had recently been mopped and was still quite damp. On approximately my third step into the cooler I felt my feet slide out from under me. In an effort to brace myself I dropped the bucket of chicken and began flailing my arms in an effort...

Topic 6 Journal Entry: Priorities

...have had is re-organizing my agenda to be able to assign time for class work. I am forfeiting a little bit of time in those two departments to make time for school. Deciding priorities is done so in a manner of importance. I make a mental list of things I need to complete ranging from top priority to not so important. For instance I rate grocery shopping higher on the list than getting my nails done, or paying rent supersedes paying for college books. Some decisions are more difficult than others but if I can identify its importance I can place it in my mental list. Prioritizing school is as simple as making a plan, rating it in my mental list, and then doing the task. If I implement what I just mentioned school will be a breeze with limited sacrifice and stress. This will result in a higher GPA and will have a "snowball" effect and motivate me to continue to improve as a student.  This topic was one that I needed to revisit. I have gone on with my life in a hectic manner and needed to be reminded of the fundamentals of priorities and how that translates into success. My main take away from this topic is obvious but still vital. I will rate events in my head then find an accurate place to put them on my mental list. I think if I can do...
