...Kristen Pereira Leslie Minkin October 16, 2015 “My Papa’s Waltz” The whiskey on your breath; Could make a small boy dizzy; judging by the title, the person addressed in these lines is the small boy's father, and the small boy is our speaker. The father has been drinking whiskey, and not just a little. He's so drunk that even the smell of his breath could make a small boy, like his son, feel a bit woozy. These lines show that the poem will address the father in the second person, referring to him as "you." But we don't think he's actually there with the boy because, after all, we hear nothing back from the man. Instead, his son is probably just thinking about talking to him. But I hung on like death; this line indicates that the whiskey is indeed making our speaker quite dizzy because he has to hang on like death, perhaps the one thing that hangs on to us all. Using the word "death" so early in the poem clues the reader in that this poem isn't just a happy memory – it's also haunted. Saying that the boy hung on "like" death is an example of a simile. Such waltzing was not easy; this line wraps up the first stanza. In what could be a happy moment, father and son dancing, we see that it's kind of tricky for the son to hold on to his drunken father. Also, if the waltz of this poem is a metaphor for their father-son relationship, this could show that it's not easy to dance between loving and fearing his father's power. We romped until the pans; Slid from the kitchen shelf;...

...Daniel McMillion 24 May 2012 Comp1 Men Among Ants The vibrations from the engines put all the passengers to sleep; including my wingman Paul sitting next to me. I tried to sleep some but, the snoring from everyone else kept me awake. I looked around at everyone in my company wearing their gear holding their rifle between their legs. Most of them had their flak vest open because it was around 80 degrees in the cabin of the plane. I still had mine buttoned up because I didn’t want to mess with it, but Paul had his completely off. He was complaining earlier about the heat before we boarded the plane. It was his first tour to the desert and it was my second. While I was sitting in my seat daydreaming, I saw a lot of commotion coming from the pilot’s deck. The stairs leading to the pilot’s deck was right in front of my seat and I could see almost the whole deck. There were a lot of lights flashing and it looked like the navigators were running around like lost squirrels trying to gather nuts. Then it happened; this loud boom out of dead silence. We were getting shot at. The concussion from the explosion of the anti-aircraft round was impeccable. I had been shot at before, but the impact was so great it vibrated through my chest. My wingman Paul has never been under fire before, he was going hysterical. I tried to calm him down but my ears were still ringing from the blast and I could not hear anything he was saying. Paul was not the only one, the cabin of the plane looked...

... Austin State University’s School of Art Annual Faculty Exhibition. This year’s exhibition features a wide array of work in painting, ceramics, metals, mixed media, digital and sculptures. The painting I chose to write about is titled “Duke and Stoney,” under the artists name Shaun Roberts. The painting is an oil on canvas and was completed in 2014. It stands 6 feet tall and 4 feet long. When I first looked at the painting “Duke and Stoney,” I noticed that there were three subjects in the painting, a man, a dog, and an armadillo lying dead on the ground. I saw that the man was holding a rife in his right hand and that his shirt was unbuttoned, allowing you to see that he has a tattoo on his chest as well as above his rectangular belt buckle. The tattoo on his chest is of a skull with two pistols pointing upwards and the one above his belt states the word “HELL.” The man is wearing baggy jeans that have a hole on the right knee and he has a knife in a pouch hanging off his belt. The man is wearing a cowboy hat and a smile. In the background there are many shadows and one of them forms the silhouette of a face. Roberts, the artist, uses soft line to add the shadows in the background of the painting making them blend in as if they aren’t even there in the first place. By doing so you can see the shadow of another person in the room with the man. The artist used the technique of impasto to texturize the man’s scruffy beard and the roughness of his torn jeans. There is repetition...

...Buckley begins with an anecdote about a time he was riding in a train in winter time. It was below freezing outside but was 30°C inside the train car. Everybody was sweating yet when the train conductor came around for tickets not a single person mentioned the temperature. When Buckley stopped the conductor to attempt to question why it was so hot, the train passengers glared at him as if to say, “what question could be so important as to justify my sibilant intrusion into his [the conductors] stupor?” Buckley continues to say that it isn’t just the people on the train that “have given up trying to rectify irrational vexations but the American people everywhere”. He goes into another personal anecdote in which this time he is at the movies with his wife. The picture is out of focus yet nobody informs management. The people up front believe the people at the rear would do the job seeing they are closer. Others believe that someone connected to management would inform them. After the show everybody went on with their business without filing a complaint. Buckley has a new year’s resolution to speak up for his rights on every appropriate occasion. A worker at a ski resort is sitting around chatting when there is a long line of people waiting. Buckley wants a screw driver to tighten a binding. When he confronts him he is informed that the worker, Jiggs, had just recovered from a heart attack and should not be moving. Moments later Jiggs was airlifted to a hospital. Buckley returned...

...Investing in Stocks and Bonds Stocks and Bonds are different in many ways. A stock is a portion or share of the ownership of a corporation. A share will give the owner of the stock the company’s profits or loses over time. The good thing about stocks is they can be sold at almost any time as long as there is someone willing to buy. A bond, on the other hand, is a fixed interest financial asset issued by governments, companies, banks, and other large entities. Bonds also are called funds. Bonds pay the owner a fixed amount a specific date, or on specified dates depending on the type of bond. If the bond is a discount bond, then there is one pay date at the end. If the bond is a coupon bond, then it pays a fixed amount over a specific time. The time could be by month, or by year. My team was assigned the task of investing 120,000 dollars over ten years. We were to invest 80% of 120,000 dollars in stocks and 20% in bonds. We invested in six different stocks and two bonds. Also, we split the money. Therefore, we each invested 6,000 dollars per year in three stocks and one bond. The first stock I decided to invest in was Nike Inc. Nike Inc. is a strongly advertised and a well-distributed company (Nike). Nike Inc. is known well across the world (Nike). When it comes to shoes, clothes, or sports apparel, everyone has at least one item of Nike. In most cases, people own multiple things of Nike equipment. Strategic Choice and Evaluation Takeisha Gilbert University of Phoenix STR-581, Strategic Planning and Implementation Instructor: Suchitra Veera The Buckle has had the opportunity to experience stability in a fluctuating market. Other organizations within its market have had close stores, file bankruptcy, lay off workers, and change distributors to save cost. It is important to understand the value discipline, generic strategy, grand strategy and rational that was essential in helping Buckle, Inc remain successful during economic hardships. Recommendations for what the organization should implement in future strategic planning will be given. Value discipline The Buckle recognized that in an economy where consumers value quality items but are dealing with decisions to buy based on affordability should always offer layaway services. This service allows consumers to afford expensive brands that express individualism with stress free payment plans. Consumers no longer have to worry about handing over large amounts of money at one time but make timely payments before the end of the layaway period. The value the organization had to offer is (1) high end merchandise, (2) layaway opportunities (affordability), (3) custom screen printing services (customer service option, and (4) alteration service. No matter what a consumer’s wallet may look like it is a realization that he or she can still afford luxury brands with the layaway option....
