...Case Study Discussion: Role of Vision at Mentor Graphics 1. How would you describe the way vision was used at Mentor Graphics? This analysis can help students understand why vision is necessary and how it can be best created. Discussions in this area look at the way vision was initially used to interpret Mentor Graphics position and role in the marketplace. Later on, the vision became a reflection of market “fads” and had no real use or meaning – this is an important point to realize. The less useful the vision became the more distanced employees and customers felt from the organization. 2. Did it strengthen or weaken the company? How? Why? This question asks students to highlight positive and negative aspects of the visions used at Mentor Graphics. Although some may view the changing vision as having strengthened or weakened the company there are arguments for both sides. Removing the focus from the core competencies weakened the company’s vision. This resulted in management not being able to make sound business decisions. Using a consultant may have also weakened the identity of the organization for employees by removing them completely from the process of creating the vision. It strengthened the company by eventually renewing focus on the core business at Mentor Graphics and where they wanted to be. The process of creating a new vision led the organization full circle and re-emphasized why they are in business. 3. Of the reasons covered in this chapter...

It refers to a relationship between an experienced person and a less experienced person for the purpose of helping the one with less experienced one, known as “the protégé”. The protégé seeks the advice and support of the more experienced person. The mentor provides proper guidance and counselling so that the less experienced persons can advance in their lives, careers or education. According to Scandura, Tejeda, werther & Lankau (1996, p. 50), in the mentoring process, mentors speedup nurturing environments wherein protégés many grow faster and more professional than their peers and are therefore better prepared to compete in the organization and as leaders. ...Training methods lectures demonstration seminar conference panel role planning case studies simulations projects self discovery movies/videos/computer based training mentoring exercise skill lesson Lecture In this method, one person (the trainer) does all of the talking. He or she may use handouts, visual aids, question/answer, or posters to support the lecture. Communication is primarily one-way: from the instructor to the learner. Pros: Less time is needed for the trainer to prepare than other methods. It provides a lot of information quickly when it is less important that the trainees retain a lot of details. Cons: Does not actively involve trainees in training process. The trainees forget much information if it is presented only orally. Demonstration Demonstration is very effective for basic skills training. The trainer shows trainees how to do something. The trainer may provide an opportunity for trainees to perform the task being demonstrated. Pros: This method emphasizes the trainee involvement. It engages several senses: seeing, hearing, feeling, touching. Cons: It requires a great deal of trainer preparation and planning. There also needs to be an adequate space for the training to take place. If the trainer is not skilled in the task being taught, poor work habits can be learned by the trainee. Seminar Seminars often combine several group methods: lectures, discussions, conferences, demonstrations. Pros: Group members are involved in...

...professional growth as a plant manager in a joint venture in Guadalajara, Mexico. His counterpart and cultural mentor is Manuel Angel Menendez Mata, a native Mexican, who is eager to help Ted settle into the new workplace and city. The warm welcome is rather short lived due to social and cultural differences between Ted and Manuel. This case study demonstrates a lack of communication and poor cultural understanding. Ted is a business- oriented individual who worked his way up in the company. With this success, Ted feels that his method of leadership and business acumen more than enough qualifies him to conduct business outside of the United States. His ethnocentric business practices slowly alienate him from Manuel and businessmen in Guadalajara. Ted is over confident in regards to how is managerial abilities will translate in Mexico (Rarick & Angriawan, 2011, p. 3). Ted fails to realize that the economic culture in Mexico is quite different from the United States and refuses to communicate his concerns and frustrations to Manuel. William A. Naughton (2003) described how Americans have a stronger need to apply their ways of working upon other cultures. He acknowledges that many people may feel their way is the best way, but the “American way” can often be viewed as insulting and patronizing (Naughton, 2003). Ted insults Manuel and some Mexican business men by attempting to rush business negotians and refusing a city which would highlight the culture of Guadalajara (Rarick & Angriawan...

...A Case Study of ABC Company COMM/215 Essentials of College Writing 8 May 2014 A Case Study of ABC Company What follows below is an analysis of the ABC Company’s hiring and training practices. In reviewing the events as described, many issues have surfaced regarding the assigned recruiter, Carl Robins and the human resources and training practices of the ABC Company. There are numerous examples of disorganization, lack of following through and areas of overlapping responsibilities, requiring a possible reorganization of the business itself. Although the Case Study does not specify, for the purposes of analysis it is assumed that there are separate Human Resources and Training Departments within the company, for, in today's business world, it would be difficult to imagine a company structure that did not include these two key departments. Initially, there appears to be a definite lack of coordination, planning and follow-through of the newly hired recruiter, Carl Robins. There are many incidents that demonstrate his lack of follow-through in the entire hiring and training processes. Many questions arise that deserve to be asked and examined. For example, 1) Why did he not immediately follow-through with the newly hired employees to ensure all required paperwork was properly and timely completed? 2) Did he assume that the Human Resource Department or Monica, the Operations Supervisor would follow-through with the scheduling of drug testing, physicals, etc. of those...

...Xerox Case Study 8.1 Using communities of practice (COP) is likely to bridge gaps between generations in an organization. Studies have shown that workers spend a third of their time looking for information and are five times more likely to turn to a co-worker rather than an explicit source of information like books, manuals, or databases (Davenport & Prusak, 2000). Time is saved by conferring with members of a COP. Members of the community have tacit knowledge, which can be difficult to store and retrieve outside. For example, one person can share the best way to handle a situation based on his experiences, which may enable the other person to avoid mistakes and shorten the learning curve. In a COP, members can openly discuss and brainstorm about a project, which can lead to new capabilities. Employees from different generations can learn from older co-workers experiences. Making the baby boomers programmed decision makers. They will have an automated response to decisions that need to be made because of knowledge and experience that can be shared through COP. The disadvantage of having COP is the setup process. The planning process of starting one usually takes over a three-month timeframe (Colquitt, 2011). Some organizations might not have time to wait on the system. But taking the time to establish a COP in the workplace is worth it as the vice president of Xerox states “The communities of practice also provide a clear roadway to career growth by mapping out expectations”...

...most famous for our initial understanding a mentor when he tells of Odysseus leaving his infant son with a companion, Mentor, when he left on his Odyssey (Gentry, Weber, & Sadri, 2008). Mentoring is a relationship between two people which lasts over an extended period of time. One of the people, the mentor, is more experienced and considered senior to the mentee and is trusted by the mentee. The mentee is less experienced, although not necessarily younger, than the mentor. Mentors can play an important role in our lives. They share knowledge, experience, and wisdom, and they critique us and give honest feedback. Positive, competent mentors develop relationships with their mentees and are focused on their growth. They are also generous and professional in their collaborations. The benefits of mentoring relationships include increased self-confidence and retention, strengthened professional relationships and increased skill levels. These consequences of mentoring improve the health environment for all. Through this concept analysis, I hope to show the attributes associated with mentoring as well as provide related terms that will provide a further understanding of the concept. A model, borderline, and contrary case will be presented that will provide examples of mentoring situations. Empirical referents that indicate the concept is present will also be presented. Literature Review Even though Florence Nightingale used mentors in the nursing field in the 1800’s, there is...

...Mentor Graphics March 17, 2013 Introduction Vision can be complicated. There are many perspectives. There are also organizational factors to consider when creating or modifying a vision, such as management strengths and weaknesses, and staff morale. Vision should provide inspiration to employees and customers. It should also paint an image of a bright and promising future. All visions should be created with caution and careful planning so they do not promise or offer something far from what is attainable. Affective Visions Vision was not used effectively at Mentor Graphics. Presence of competing visions existed and it continued to change for several years while the management tried to get a hold on their fear of failure. Their initial vision "Build Something That People Will Buy" was not a motivating for the employees but did send the message to the customer that they would get what they want. Mentor Graphics experienced all three of the debates of linking vision to change. Their first vision drove change as it did provide intent, however it lacked specific strategy. Their second vision ("Beat Daisy"), emerged during change and was driven by the need to get back on top of the market after Daisy Systems out sold Mentor Graphics. Their final vision in the early 1990's also emerged during change. Mentor Graphics vision, early on, helped their change, but once they began to feel like they were losing business to Daisy Systems, they changed the vision...

...Case Title: Evergreen Natural Markets 2012 Course: Management Principles Firm Overview and Introduction to the Case Evergreen Natural Markets was founded by Donald Slater as a small seasonal produce stand which grew into an organic grocery store. With Slater’s success he was approached for business advice which lead him to acquire other grocery stores while keeping former proprietors on as management, which lead to the formula for partnering with the managers of acquired stores. After Slater’s death in 1998, his daughter Kathleen (Slater) Norton took over the Evergreen Markets as CEO and continued expanding the company holding on to the value that her father had placed on partnering with managers of acquired stores and expanding the core values of Evergreen Nature Markets. As Evergreen Natural Markets expanding they also added a distribution center which offered a number of benefits like in-store inventory reduction and fewer stock-outs of canned and packaged goods, which increased operation margins. As competition started to move into the Rocky Mountain West area Evergreen Markets decided to expand outside of the normal area by acquiring Arugula Grocers a seven store natural food chain in Nevada. In the acquisition of Arugula Grocers issues and problems Evergreen Natural Markets are whether Evergreen Natural Markets have the best control systems to deal with the expansion in to the Nevada Market. ...Poisonous Management in Nursing American Sentinel University Poisonous Management in Nursing In today’s nursing world people in a management position can abuse their authority. A prime example is the case study “Nurse Manager Power” that is described in our text (Grohar & Langan, 2011). The case study describes Mrs. Jackson, the nurse manager, as a negative and abusive person. Mrs. Jackson publicly degrades, humiliates, and segregates her staff by showing favoritism. Overall, unit morale decreases because of the stigma in the unit. Upper management will now have to intervene to resolve the issue. There are several different types of power listed in our text. In this particular case, Mrs. Jackson uses coercive power. Coercive power is defined as “the use of fear to ensure compliance from subordinates” (Grohar & Langan, 2011). The staff fear repercussions if they bring their issues to Mrs. Jackson and staff members have their schedules created according to favoritism. There is also the use of legitimate power in this case. Legitimate power is defined as “the officially sanctioned right of the superior to exact rights and obligations from subordinates” (Grohar & Langan, 2011). Mrs. Jackson’s legitimate power comes from her position as nursing manager. She is responsible for controlling and running the coronary care step-down unit and with that comes power. Reward power is also apparent and is defined as “when a leader or manager uses their position...
