1. Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, The reader is introduced to the horror of war in the first lines of the poem as Owen depicts the poor physical condition of the men.They are facing huge challenges and that they were not the men that they were at first because they were young men who were highly motivated. We cursed through sludge suggests to us how the soldier are off to war this shows that they are cursed and the word sludge suggests to us that they are off to fight in horrendous conditions. Additionally, at the end it shows us that rather being glories young men they turn into this horrible creature because they are being described as old beggars and hags and it shows that they are old before their time and they have got no control over their lives. They can’t walk properly and this tells us that they are very weak because it clearly shows that they are not prepared for it and that they were just brainwashed to go to war to fight for their country which was sweet and glory. Moreover, the soldiers are coughing like an old sick ugly women and this clearly defines how they are feeling and are compared to weak and old. This simile demonstrates how dirty and unhealthy the soldiers appear. The comparison to ‘old beggars’ Coughing like hags is a simile and they are compared to these old ugly women and this shows how weak they have become and that they are affected by the war. We cursed through sludge, This shows that they feel exhausted, weak and misled and that the soldiers feel regretful because the young soldiers was persuaded to go to war due to sweet and heroic it would be and so far the process is very slow due to feeling terrible and weak. The writer uses a powerful verb and an effective imagery it is simply because it shows the reader an imagery of the soldiers being in a breaking point and the imagery shows us how sticky the mud is while the soldiers are feeling exhausted. Lastly the writer uses these techniques to feel sympathy for the soldiers and lastly Owen is creating that personal attachment to the story through using the word “We”.

2.Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling, This implicates to us how close they are to death because only the mask and the panic would save their life and satisfies despite the nightmare they are going through. Gas gas shows the short sharp words (all stressed) conveys the panic and speed that the soldiers must act with. ecstasy of fumbling implies to extreme pleasure and relief at managing to fit the gas mask in time to avoid being poisoned. The soldiers can’t do anything because they are fumbling this suggests to us that they are struggling. The word drowning of the poem depicts the desperation for air so the soldiers can breathe like a unable to breath in a fire place where there is no oxygen. Wilfred Owen uses emotive language to create a moment for the readers by using He plunges at me, guttering, choking, and drowning. 4.Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Far from sweet Owen makes an horrific comparison No one could fail to be moved by this horrific scene. Wilfred Owen is suggesting to us that the war is horrendous just like a cancer and he does this because cancer has no cure so does the dead because once they die they can’t come back alive so therefore, the war is not a honor nor glories rather it is horrendous and horrific. Wilfred Owen uses metaphor and simile to justify his point obscene as cancer refers to how horrific the war is by using metaphor and simile at the same time,(cancer) Furthermore, the soldiers going to war was unsweet bitter as the cud like when you are chewing something that doesn’t taste nice so therefore, Owen uses metaphor and simile to show his frustration and emotion within the idea of war. 5. The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est He conveys the word the old is a lie to tells the readers that the young men who were told that the war would be sweet and glories to die for you country. Furthermore, Wilfred Owen responds to it by telling us that it wasn’t really glories as the young men was told because the soldiers had lost their lives. Finally, this poem leaves us with touching and thoughts that the young men fallen for the idea that it is sweet and glorious.

Wilfred Owen wrote the poem anthem for doomed youth after experiencing the First World War. Line 1, “what passing-bells for these who die as cattle?” This is a big statement because Owen’s experience uttered him to compare the horrendous treatment that the young men were going through.
Additionally, they were being compared to animals because it seems like the soldiers were in a queue to be slaughtered like a cattle’s, this suggests to us that this is very inhuman because the soldiers are being compared to animals because of the word slaughter.
Furthermore, Wilfred Owen uses simile to justify his point and uses religious imagery, to create a picture for the readers so that his message becomes explicit. Finally, “passing bells “they are rung to mark when someone has passed away, but then it continues with horrific experience and rhetorical is being used “what passing-bells for these who die as cattle?”
In line 2, Wilfred Owen is implicating to us how guns are everywhere. “Only the monstrous anger of the guns.” This suggests to us that the death tolls of the soldiers is highly increasing, causing danger and alarming to the young soldiers because of the horrendous “anger of the guns “
Wilfred Owen uses personification “anger of the guns.” Because he is giving human qualities to the guns by showing the anger of the guns. Furthermore, Wilfred Owen uses imagery to describe what is going on by indicating us that the guns are everywhere and lastly Wilfred suggests to us that the only sound that the young soldiers are hearing is the “Only the monstrous anger of the guns.”. Lastly, it shows uses it to shows us the effect and emotion he is feeling within this poem.

In line 3, Wilfred Owen is talking about how the rapid rattle is costing lots of life because they are quick, loud and messy. “Only the stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle” furthermore, Owen is indicating to us how the prayers are being repeated rapidly.
Additionally, Wilfred Owen uses an effective alliteration stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle to show us the lack of ceremony for the dead soldiers and this is imagery because it helps the readers to hear the sounds of the gunfire.

This implicates to us that these young soldiers who are dying do not have a real funeral as the soldiers are far away from home so there is no time of proper funeral. Furthermore, a real funeral is when the soldiers are receiving flowers and their families, friends are there. Additionally, there are more bodies to be buried and everything is moving quickly because the young were experiencing a hefty defeat in which they coax to fight for their country because it is glorious and honor as they were told.
Wilfred Owen uses rhetorical question and an effective imagery in which he goes on what candles may be held. He is clearly saying this because the soldiers are far away from home and they are not with their families and friends so therefore, there is no proper funeral being held and Wilfred Owen justifies the wart to be a horrific reality and a waste of lives

The drawing down of blinds. Owen shows his condolences by telling us of how deeply and concerned he shows for the families of the young soldiers who passed away. Owen uses metaphor and gives an insight of the imagery because the drawing down of blinds shows us that he will remember it and that it would always be unforgotten in his mind.
