ABOUT THE ARTICLE. From the article, California create a regulation to decrease the air pollution cause from heavy trucks. The regulation start when a group of scientists measured a thousands of heavy-duty trucks over months at a time at two San Francisco Bay Area locations. The studies conclude that heavy-duty truck are major sources of nitrogen oxides which contributes to global warming and regional changes in climate, such as precipitation and snow melting. At the same time, air pollution is linked to 100,000 premature deaths per year in the United States, according to published studies. While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set emissions standards for new engines, most trucks and buses run for several decades, so the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has sought to accelerate emissions reductions with aggressive new regulations in recent years. As a result growing numbers of heavy-duty diesel trucks in California are using two control technologies, a diesel particle filter, which removes most particulate matter, and selective catalytic reduction, which targets emissions of nitrogen oxides.
Besides, this regulations are

...Environmental issues and regulations In addition to the previously discussed concerns, Big Rapids must identify the environmental issues and regulations related to each site. These environmental considerations, such as their effects on air, water, and land, will have an impact on the final decision where Big Rapids will be located. Regardless of the chosen site, the laws instituted by the EPA must be followed. The following states environmental regulations will be discussed: Arizona, Texas, and Tennessee. Environmental regulations for the state of Arizona are enforced by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. Arizona’s environmental regulations primarily focus on air, water, and waste. The Grand Canyon National Park is protected by the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts – these provide for monitoring of hazardous air and water pollutants because of its historical significance. According to the Glen Canyon Institute (2010, para. 6), Congress passed the Grand Canyon Protection Act to protect the Canyon and mitigate damages associated with building new structures within it. Big Ben National Park, located on the Rio Grande River in Texas, is another potential site for Big Rapids. The Texas Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for the regulation of air and water pollution as well as waste reduction. California Environmental Policies

...Climate Here in California, we are constantly creating ever-more-rigorous environmental regulation. As politicians continue to push these environmental regulations forward, one question arises: Is this kind of regulation a drag on our economy, or is it the basis for our emerging green economy and the foundation for a greener future? Although environmental policies in California promote a healthier lifestyle, they are hurtful to the business climate. Over the past few decades, regulation has transformed the California economy in many ways, but it is starting to become clearer that many of those changes are not positive. These environmental policies are hurtful to the business climate in a number of ways. Some of these ways are: 1) Policies created put restraints on businesses causing a lack of jobs in California 2) Economic resources misappropriated on environmental policies 3) Restraints of environmental policies are negatively affecting the agricultural industry More Policies Equals Less Jobs In recent years, there have been more and more policies being imposed on businesses in California. Sure, air pollution regulations have cleaned up the air, but they have done so partly by driving the “dirty” industries out of California and into Nevada, Arizona, and Texas. The air is cleaner here, but it is not clear that this has had a net benefit either to California’s economy or the world’s environment. A Better Way of Spending The California State Assembly has...

Air Pollution In Southern California

...Every year, Southern Californians guzzle gallons of fossil fuel. As a result, air pollution is still extremely high. With little education about the issue, many citizens are unaware of the pollutants they are emitting. However, the population of Southern California could improve their actions against air pollution, and strengthen their current activities. Everyone can make a difference in this issue. Efforts should be strengthened to reduce Southern California’s excessive use of fossil fuels and increase environmental consciousness about the matter. Southern California has made some efforts to reduce air pollution, but many of these efforts will take a long time and are not doing enough to end the problem. Orange County and the surrounding regions have somewhat been improving the quality of our air through various advancements in the fields of technology and other methods (“Discover Magazine”)....

Climate Change Regulation

...Climate Change Regulation SCI/362 March 7, 2011 Climate Change Regulation With the more recognized concerns of environmental ethics and climate control since the 1970s, humans on Earth face greater consequences of health risks, air pollution, climate change, and depleting resources. As the human population grows even closer to the seven billion mark, humans are consuming more resources—especially in the more developed countries like the United States, Europe, Japan, and the rising China. Countries like India, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates, who hold the majority of the world’s resources, uses fewer resources than the more developed countries. Some people suggest that humans should be more responsible for the consumption of these resources as humans need to sustain and preserve human growth as well as Earth’s growth. Another viewpoint is that by depleting more of these fossil fuels for consumption, whether it is for personal use or industrial use, humans are polluting the air with toxic materials. Toxic materials such as lead, nitrogen oxides, sulfuric oxide, carbon oxides (carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide), hydrocarbons, and ozone are by-products of fossil fuel combustion polluting the air that is affecting Earths atmosphere. Slightly increased temperatures, acid rain polluting the waters and eroding the soil for plant and tree growth, deforestation, human activity, and droughts are the major effects of Earths atmosphere we see going...

Low Carbon Regulations and Incentives: a Key Factor to Increase Low-Carbon Vehicles Sales

...Low Carbon Regulations and Incentives: A Key Factor to Increase Low-carbon Vehicles sales Carl Abstract The United Stated low carbon regulations and incentives are playing a significant role in promoting the use of hybrid and electric vehicles. The low carbon regulation made more vehicle buyers purchase hybrid or electric vehicles instead of the gas vehicles. The generalization of low-carbon vehicles still has some challenges. The U.S. government probably needs to encourage the low-carbon vehicle manufacturers which may address low-carbon vehicle battery and high cost problem. Therefore, it is important for the generalization of low-carbon vehicles that the U.S. low carbon regulation and incentives work together. Low carbon regulation and low carbon incentives were issued to reduce gasoline use and reduce air pollution, and the hybrid and electric vehicles is a way to achieve these two goals. Regulation is a kind of law which is issued to control some details (Regulation Legal Definition, n.d.). Low carbon incentive is kinds of method which encourage people or company do the best of the using of low-carbon products. In recent years, the more governments started to address air contaminate via issuing many kinds of low carbon regulation. Climate Change Regulations

...Climate Change Regulations Paper University of Phoenix SCI 362 April 2, 2012 Climate Change Regulations Climate change is an intricate comparison of numerous geological, atmospheric, and ecological sources. Often the viewpoint of climate change is distilled into an oversimplification of global warming. Global warming is mostly understood in lay terms as the warming of the earth due to the overproduction of greenhouse gasses. In reality, climate change is, “a measure of changes in the statistical properties of the climate system when considered over periods of decades or longer, regardless of cause.” There are three main views pertaining to climate change; global warming, solar irradiance, and natural cycles of the atmosphere. Global warming is the viewpoint that human influences have and are altering the atmosphere by raising the temperature of the planet. This viewpoint is the most widely accepted view from scientists around the world who believe that the release of large amounts of CO2 and Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) (amongst other gasses are creating a greenhouse effect. The effect of global warming is not completely known. While some sources such as environmental groups like Greenpeace, predict catastrophe, groups like NASA admit that the implications of global warming are not well known (NASA, 2011). The other view of climate change pertains to solar irradiance. The sun has affected the earth’s weather in the past and solar output has increased in...

...Air pollution is still a growing issue in Los Angeles. However, with new regulation, air pollution is becoming less of a problem. However, Los Angeles still ranks as one of the top polluters in California (Barbosa, 2014). California as a whole has implemented regulations that will lessen the effects of the major air polluters; however, there is more work to be done. What is air pollution? “Air pollution is the introduction into the atmosphere of chemicals, particulates, and biological matter that cause harm to humans, other living organisms, or cause damage to the natural environment” (Coffey, 2010). Air pollution affects all living things. Plants, animals, and humans are all affected by air pollution. Air pollution is a threat to human health as well as the earth’s eco system. The earth is somewhat able to clean itself, however, the because of the number of pollutants, the earth struggles to clean itself. The result of the earth not being able to clean itself results in acid rain, smog, and the numerous of other safety and health problems. Air pollution may also be a cause for climate change and global warming. The cause of air pollution “Carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is the main pollutant that is warming Earth. Though living things emit carbon dioxide when they breathe, carbon dioxide is widely considered to be a pollutant when associated with cars, planes, power plants, and other human activities that involve the burning of fossil fuels such as gasoline...

There Will Be Blood Movie Relations to Environmental Law and Policy

...4/26/2012 Environmental Law and Policy Third Assignment “There Will Be Blood” Environmental Issues and Connections “There Will Be Blood” by Paul Thomas Anderson starring Daniel Day Lewis reproduces the early 1900s oil boom in southern California. Daniel Day Lewis plays a man named Daniel Plainview, the very serious boss of a drilling company. After adopting a son early on in the movie for purely business reasons he leads us on the path of innovation and growth within a new industry. His depictions of oil drilling in the turn of the 20th century present endless environmental law issues. These issues have resulted in the regulation of an industry, countless strains on the environment and the contributing factors to many of the United States administrations and their regulation. Without the need of oil to power automobiles and many other gas-powered mechanisms, some of these laws and regulations might not be necessary today. Early on in the film Daniel Plainview is approached by Paul Sunday, the son of a man owning a ranch in the fictional town of Little Boston, California. Paul explains to Daniel there is oil present on his families land there, however we never see Paul again in the film. Daniel goes to the Sunday Ranch pretending to hunt for quail when really assessing the situation. Plainview finds oil and seems to think there is a lot of it so he quickly buys up everyone’s land around the Sunday Ranch. Little Boston a very religious community is not very wealthy...

Business Practice Audit

...current business practices at its processing plants located in California, Georgia, Michigan, and China. The business sustainability worksheets used to complete the evaluation aided the team in locating common areas of non-sustainable practices relating to land, water, and air pollution. The three non-sustainable practices evaluated further are solid waste, and hazardous waste causing land pollution, hazardous waste causing water pollution, and gaseous waste causing air pollution. These areas are the most harmful to the immediate population, which includes the plant workers and the communities. Solid Waste and Hazardous Waste Causing Land Pollution One of the non-sustainable practices is adding to land pollution. Currently, off-spec materials are sent to the landfill (Apollo, 2012). In addition to this, scrap plastic managed as waste goes to the landfill (Apollo). The biggest problem is that plastic is not biodegradable. When plastic and off-spec products are sent to the landfill, breakdown occurs but at minimal rates and these take longer to biodegrade over time. To remain compliant with government regulations, Riordan Manufacturing is required to identify hazardous waste generated each month if it exceeds 2,200 pounds (Apollo, 2012). If Riordan Manufacturing’s plants generate products in excess of 2,200 pounds per month, a set procedure needs to be followed to ensure proper disposal (Apollo). Regulations are set to minimum standards, and Riordan Manufacturing should...

...industry launched "courtesy awareness" campaigns. Fearing reduced sales, the industry created a media and legislative programme that focused upon "accommodation". Tolerance and courtesy were encouraged as a way to ease heightened tensions between smokers and those around them, while avoiding smoking bans. In the USA, states were encouraged to pass laws providing separate smoking sections.[33] In 1975, the US state of Minnesota enacted the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act, making it the first state to restrict smoking in most public spaces. At first, restaurants were required to have No Smoking sections, and bars were exempt from the Act.[34] As of 1 October 2007, Minnesota enacted a ban on smoking in all restaurants and bars statewide, called the Freedom to Breathe Act of 2007.[35] The resort town of Aspen, Colorado, became the first city in the US to restrict smoking in restaurants, in 1985, though it allowed smoking in areas that were separately ventilated.[36] On 3 April 1987, the City of Beverly Hills, California, initiated an ordinance to restrict smoking in most restaurants, in retail stores and at public meetings. It exempted restaurants in hotels – City Council members reasoned that hotel restaurants catered to large numbers of visitors from abroad, where smoking is more acceptable than in the United States. In 1990, the city of San...
