Reading Reflection #1

Article on Career Field

The main purpose of the article I read regarding Software Engineers states that with the ever increasing demand for these types of professionals, there are more of them than ever that are choosing to seek different employment and being very selective in the companies they pick. The author is addressing the fact that a study done by Glassdoor is showing that not only can these engineers be selective in their job searches, but is also highlighting some of the main reasons for their want to move on. I find the study to be very interesting and eye opening. It seems that most of these new job seekers are not even primarily focused on compensation as a motivator, but focusing on a favorable company culture, the opportunity to grow in the company, as well as the products and projects they will be working on. Now, of course, compensation is a factor when considering a new job, however it no longer seems to be what is driving the software engineers to be making that career change. According to the article, “One-half of software engineers plan to look for a new job within the year,” as well as, “52% of software engineers are likely to accept a job with less money if the employer has a great culture.” I find these statistics to be favorable and unfavorable at the same time. On one side, it is fantastic that people in this field find the need for a software engineer so in demand that they can make the choice when and where to go for their next jobs, especially when this is not the case for most careers in the job markets today. On the other side, if half of the software engineers are going to be looking for new employment in the next year, this creates a lot of competition for me when I start looking for a software engineering job next year. If there is more competition, especially with experienced applicants, it may be more difficult to be noticed by perspective employers.

Overall, I am extremely excited that the career track I chose to follow at ITT Tech is a field with a high demand for qualified individuals. The article not only helped me become reassured that going back to school was the right option for me, but also what to look for and be wary about when it comes to recruiters. Staying away from recruiters who send mass emails for the same position is something that seems obvious, but being reminded about that has made me pay closer attention to these kinds of details.

Pdp Plan

...and Goal 3 – Career development. In order to set these goals achievable, I have pre-determined some measurement methods named “how will I measure goal success?” in the form of PDP Plan. Indispensible, I have also planned some activities to assist and ensure the achievement of these goals. After two months development in practice, I would like to express my goals achievement in this reflection essay. By doing so, I will add-on unplanned activities which I have performed into my PDP, and then make comments to all activities either planned or unplanned. In further, I will also state reflections on goal attainment. By the end of this reflection essay, I will expand these three goals into a further step, which for me to achieve in future. 2.0 Personal Development Planning 3.1 Explanation of PDP I am all the way talking about PDP, I feel it’s necessary to explain what is PDP based on my own understanding. PDP (Personal development Planning) is a supported and structured progress which undertaken by individual (me) to reflect upon my own performance or achievement in the elements of academic, personal, and career development. The progress of PDP embraces many approaches to learning that connect planning (establish the goal or goals which intended to achieve), doing (take actions/ activities for the goals), recording (take notes and record the experiences, ideas, and thoughts which can be taken as evidence for the progress or result of learning) and reflection (evaluate and...

Impact on Nursing

...“Reading, discussing, and writing assignments”, has changed my nursing career overview. Reading has helped me in exploring through various articles by getting vital information and ideas, which helped me, engage in critical thinking, as well as knowing about the author, and where was it published. Discussion helped me to decide whether I agree or disagree with the situation and make my own ideas. It is an excellent way of exploring both sided of the argument. Also, it helped me to try and think of real life examples that proved my point. Writing assignments helped me relate my actual work scenarios into writing; it helped me to do a lot of researches. Regardless of searching and putting my work experience into theory, quality essay writing also accounts for the style of writing, with all the rules and syntax throughout the essay. It will not only reflect on the grades, but also gives me a chance to write a persuasive essay. How will any changed view impact on nursing practice? In module 1, I learned about “what reflection mean to me”. The article on reflection was extremely insightful, reflecting back at my experience has changed my personal outlook and helped me to analyze and criticize my past. I also learned about different nursing professional organizations and the benefits it offers. I felt the need to spend more time on the related website and take advantage of some of the benefits they offer for e.g. ANA & AORN. ANA & ICN code of ethics has changed my view on nursing...

Journal

...the journal article titled A Case Study Examining the Impact of Cognitive Load on Reflection and Pre-service Teachers' Transfer of Specific Teaching Behaviors and was authored by Thomas W. Broyles, Cory M. Epler, and Jessica W. Waknine, who are all from Virginia Tech University. The article goes into detail about a study in which twenty seven pre-service teachers in Career and Technical Education were examined. It showed how reflection and transfer of certain teaching behaviors are impacted by cognitive loads. Once all the teachers were selected, they were broken up into fourteen teams. The teachers were videotaped while teaching a lesson that was pre-written. After their teaching session was over, the different groups were then asked to reflect what they taught and how they taught it. From there, the groups were divided even further as seven groups were asked to be in an experimental group that was to have their reflective experience create a cognitive load that was higher than that of the other group. The second group was then placed into a control group that was designed to have a lesser cognitive load than their counterparts. Following the second round of teaching, focus groups were then used to engage the participants in discussion. Following the focus groups concluded their discussions; the individuals who were researching this subject came up with a conclusion of the higher cognitive load of the first group had a greater impact on the depth of reflection and transfer...

Article Critique

...NAME INSTITUTION Instructor Date REFLECTING ON PRACTICE: using learning journals in higher and continuing education. Introduction. The article by A.M Langer (2000) explores the effectiveness of applying study journals in enhancing students understanding of technical courses. The author acknowledges existence of other scholarly documents evaluating the influence of journals in improving students understanding of applied courses such as mathematics and physics. He builds on the existing literature to establish a theoretical background of the study in the literature review. The literature review also identifies the knowledge gap that the study carried out by Langer seeks to fill. Langer argues that there is a significant lack of literature exploring the use of journals in enhancing the study of technical courses by nontraditional students (Langer 2000). He carries out a research to establish the effect of using scholar journals by nontraditional students undertaking computer technology classes in the University of Columbia. The scope of the study covers a population of ten students. According to the article, the sampling technique is unbiased as it has equity in gender and utilizes a random sampling method that entails selection of every tenth student in alphephetical order as per the last name. The selected group was required to submit journals to the group of researchers. The researchers sort to meet discrete objectives defined by the study. The objectives included evaluation...

Langer Article Critique

...which is “how the use of journals impacted the learning process of adult non-traditional students and how this impact compared to that of traditional students”. The purpose of this article critique is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Langer (2002) article. The body of the critique will develop the five major elements, which begin with the research question/problem to include the author’s purpose for writing the article. The next element is the conceptual framework, followed by the methodology, results/findings of the study, and lastly the discussion. Even though the research question is stated clearly in the third sentence, the use of the terms former and latter in the introduction was somewhat ambiguous because the two comparatives were used early in the paragraph. The article mentioned traditional students, but it was unclear if they too were adults. The reviewer eventually determined that the traditional students were adults because the article stated that the computer technology certification courses were designed for adult students interested in changing their careers. Langer (2002) gave a clear purpose of his study, which was to understand the immediate and extended effects of journals as learning tools for working with adult students, as well as promoting critical reflection. The theoretical/conceptual framework provides sufficient and current references, which supports the importance of the research question. Lukinsky (1990) was a part of the literature...

Public Relations

...composition with something like the first paragraph. I would talk about PR, its meaning, and then write down what qualities a PR professional must possess. I was originally planning to do just that. When I got home from school last Friday, I immediately sat in front of my desktop computer, meaning to start with this reflection paper. It was 8:08 P.M then. 10…20…50 minutes had passed and I still didn’t have a clue on what to write. I told myself, “It’s okay, this paper isn’t due until Thursday next week anyway. I don’t need to finish it now. I’m off the hook.” Saturday came, and the same thing happened. I just stared on my PC’s screen for 3 hours! Heck, there wasn’t even a single letter on that blank document! It was clean and white! But then again, it’s okay. I told myself that there’s still tomorrow, and the day after that, and then the next, next day after that. Surely by then, I would have come up with something brilliant for this piece. I was totally wrong. I started to panic when Sunday came and I still didn’t know what to do with this paper. “What is wrong with me?! Why couldn’t I write something as simple as this? It’s just a mere reflection paper, for Pete’s sake! IT’S JUST PR!” And then it hit me. Who am I to say that “It’s JUST PR”? Who gave me the right to say something like that when I don’t even know what Public Relations truly mean? I later figured out that it was the problem all along. I absolutely didn’t know a thing about PR. How can I write...

Management

...23 September 2015 Risks Worth Taking? A Reflection on the Effects of Memoirs The primary purpose of my research paper is to present a cross-section of the current conversations taking place around the way memoirs affect the writers who publish them. Based on my research, it appears that the effects tend to involve emotional and psychological consequences, as well as legal troubles in some instances. The discovery of this conversation helped me to refine my research topic into the question, “Do the benefits of publishing a memoir outweigh the risks of their effects for writers?” This research explores the positive and negative effects of memoirs on their writers to determine whether or not the risks are worth the rewards. Although writing a memoir can result in lawsuits and family discord, it more often proves to be therapeutic and can be the starting point of a nonfiction writer's career. What if I told you that memoirs are incredibly important to our society, because they document the human experience in such an honest way? Although they are valuable, they can also be risky. One key issue is that a memoir’s admissions risk causing major drama for writers, including legal trouble. In addition, they can be a catalyst for burning bridges with former employees. They can also potentially destroy long-term personal relationships. In this paper, I work to discover if it is worth all the drama to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. As I began my research...
