Self-Assessment
My name is Jacob Joshy Kalarickal. I am a 15 year old boy who basically follows the pattern eat-sleep-ball-study–repeat. I know that sounded crazy, well I guess that speaks a little bit about my personality. I am the first born out of two children. Many first borns possess traits such as organization, intelligence, ambition, imagination, confidence, and most importantly responsibility. However I don’t possess most of these traits. Maybe that gives a little foreshadowing to my self-esteem, which I’ll admit isn’t quite at the top of the pack. However with the knowledge I’ve gained throughout the course I hope to change these qualities, along with other qualities that are preventing from going deep within me, and discovering more things about me. Through changing these qualities it will in turn benefit me in the future. I like to refer to myself as a student athlete, and in turn believe that education must come first in life as it is the keys to open many doors in life. I am that person that tries to get involved with as many things as possible, and in turn believe that more transferable skills can be gained by a well-rounded individual. Being a part of BMBA (Brampton Minor Basketball Association) coaching staff, Mississauga Knights rep basketball program, Teen Library Council, School badminton and chess teams, Concert Band, being an honour roll student are all activities that define me as an individual. I try to get involved as many events as I can in my efforts to try to give back all I can to the community. I am a dedicated who uses all the skills I possessed in order to the best I can in almost everything I do. I also consider myself to be a practical thinker who is curious, hesitant, loyal, independent, and stubborn (at times). Obviously like any other normal individual I do have my own collection of dislikes. These include rude people, racism, homework, social justice issues, and any sort of work that involves me working hard (that is only when I am lazy which is basically always), and most importantly being woken up early in the morning on week-ends.

Through the completion of several self-assessments in this course, I have discovered new things about myself. After completing the self-esteem quiz, I found out that my self-esteem was at the Middle of the Road. My self –esteem in the middle meaning it is not the best, and not the worst. After completing this self-assessment I was told that I could improve my self-esteem my believing in myself more.
Another thing I have learned is that in terms of handling change I am a Borderline Positive Coyote. Through what I have learned about adapting to change I will need to avoid hesitating on things. The completion of the personality type’s quiz informed me that I am a sensible, cautious, careful, modest, and practical individual. I learned that I l am not a clever, gifted, or talented individual. However I discovered that I am a loyal person who struggles to make friends at first but are extremely loyal to the friends I do make. I will definitely work on my weak aspects by finding new activities that will help in this. Doing activities that help me develop my weak traits will in turn help me develop a well-rounded personality. Through completing various other assessments I found out that I have strong personal management, teamwork, and Academic skills. These are key skills employers look at before hiring their employees; hence it is my duty to continue to keep these skills at a high level. After completing my Multiple Intelligences, Brain Dominance, and Learning Styles quizzes I soon confirmed that I am dominated equally by both sides of the brain, I possess a Doing Learning Style, and my top three Multiple Intelligences rotate around Intrapersonal, Visual/Spatial, and Bodily/Kinaesthetic intelligences. Even though I am dominated both sides of the brain currently I could still improve my brain my doing brain exercises (Sudoku, puzzles, etc.), and definitely improve my weak intelligences, and Learning Styles if that is possible. The values assignment helped me discover things I value important (Help Society, Intelligence, Physical Challenge, Spirituality, and Leisure), and things I don’t value (Beauty, Stability, Work Alone). This helped me get a deeper understanding of me as an individual, and taught me to respect others values as every person has their own values.
It would be a blasphemous statement to say that this course hasn’t helped me a bit in preparing me for the workplace. This career studies course has prepared me for the workplace, and taught me how to develop and achieve my skills, and goals in Academics, Career, and many other aspects in life. I hope to use the knowledge I have gained from this course and apply it to my daily life in order to attain success.

Your Career and You

Out of the 2 careers I have researched about the career that interest me the most is becoming an aerospace engineer. Growing up the first toy I actually fell in love with was an airplane. As I got older my favourite books to read became books about space science. I always dreamed about being in a spacecraft and building one. Becoming an aerospace engineer would transform my dreams into reality. The toughest part off this career will be choosing which group of aerospace engineer I want to become. The 2 groups of aerospace engineers are aeronautical engineers and astronautical engineers. Aeronautical engineers work mainly with aircraft, and Astronautical engineers work primarily with spacecraft. I would like to become an Aeronautical engineer because it would provide me with more opportunities in my profession. The spacecraft side will have not many jobs available in the future. However due to the continued need of improved aircrafts and aircraft technology the Aeronautical side of the profession will continue to prosper. Becoming an Aeronautical engineer requires high responsibility, concentration, maturity, and many more important skills as one small mistake could result in the lives of several people. Aeronautical Engineers must also have deep understanding in subjects such as mathematics, physics and aerodynamics. It is the responsibility of the engineer to guarantee the highest level of safety

An Aeronautical engineer requires many skills and traits that define who he /she a person. But in regards to Academics, Aeronautical engineers require personal management, and teamwork skills. Academically, Aeronautical engineers must be able to successfully manage and analyze data in order to provide proper measurements when building aircraft. Teamwork wise, Aeronautical engineers must have great leadership and communication skills, as well respect the ideas of others. Possessing high levels of leadership and communication skills will ensure high efficiency performance wise. Confidence and Imitative are Personal Management skills required. As employees in this field an individual must take imitative to get tasks accomplished, and high levels of confidence as many people’s lives are in your hands. Low self-esteem will only help you make you make mistakes, hence high confidence is required. Out of all these skills I possess are my ability to analyze data efficiently, my leadership skills, Initiative, and respect the ideas of others. Being a high achieving and mature high student has helped me develop these skills, and how I view people and problems. For example I currently coach a house league basketball team, and whenever a problem arises I use my critical thinking, or seek help in order to solve the problem. I am able to this because I am a high achieving and mature high school student. Being a member of several sports teams has helped me gain a positive attitude towards things. Whether it’s on the basketball court or in life I face problems with a positive attitude. Through various group activities, rep teams, and memberships in clubs I have learned to work co-operatively with others at the same time respecting their values and opinions.
However in order to achieve success in this profession I would need to improve my patience, communication, Self-control, and gentleness. These skills can be obtained however through various volunteer activities such as volunteering at sports centres, and Younger children, old age homes, charitable organizations, and churches.
Several values are required to wanting to pursue a career in Aerospace engineering. However the values I possess that will help me get into this career are: leadership, Listening, Evaluating, and Presenting. A good leader ensures not only his success but also his teammates success. I believe I am a good leader because I always look out for my co-workers. In Aerospace engineering teamwork is key to success. It takes a lot of coordination, and team chemistry in order to build the aircraft correctly. I intend to utilize my leadership skills to achieve success as a whole, and support people when they struggle. That to me is a good leader, and a good leader is someone everyone wants to work with. I want people to want to work with me. A good listener always gets his task done correctly. I intend to use my good listening skills to do my job correctly, and get the job done with the best quality. Evaluating is analyzing both sides of the situation. I intend to use this skill to solve any problem that arises in my career. A good presenter always gets his message across. In Aerospace engineering I will have to use my presenting skills to communicate more efficient ideas across to my co-workers.

Planning courses and choosing the right ones have always been a challenge for me. It’s so hard to choose eight when there are so many courses out there. To me courses are like doors, you only step through certain doors in life. The more doors you open, the more opportunities you have. I finally chose my courses based on my values and interest.

The courses I have chosen are displayed above in the table. When it came to selecting my courses I realized that I need to think ahead before choosing them because I need certain courses to get into the University programs I wish to be in. I knew that my dream career is Aerospace Engineering from the beginning; hence I chose my courses after discussions with my guidance counsellor and research. The courses I chose will lead me to University programs for Aerospace Engineering. In regards to my courses I chose Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, along with several Math courses which are all courses that are prerequisites required to get into Aerospace Engineering in most universities. The other courses in my table consist of the mandatory courses which are English, and Religion, along with courses that I can score high marks in such as Business, and Gym as they are also one of my strengths speaking Academic wise. At the end of my high school career I hope to unlock the correct doors in life through the collection of many keys/courses.

...Building a career plan is difficult, if people have no clue what career field interest them, what is the person strength and weaknesses, and if the person posse the passion for a certain career. Working on my competencies section, I have identified my strengths. If I have to categorize myself with the results, I will say my top three is adapting to change, strategizing, and innovating. To be a high-quality manager or a leader, they must be willing to accept changes. Since, not all work environments are the same. Adjusting to change will make a person realize what works and what does not work. At the same time strategizing and innovative is critical to managers. For a company to raise profit or cut spending, it requires strategizing because without a road map a person may not be able to find the final destination. An innovative person who thinks outside the box usually performs at a higher level. Creative and innovative thinkers stand out in front of their peers and will be successful in their careers. Conducting the exercise, I understand how competencies relate to one another and identify my strength and weakness. If I change my communication techniques to be an effective communicator, I will ensure to disseminate information at the lowest level and use back brief technique. This will mitigate miscommunication among the staff and I will use this technique to check on my staff. To complete assigned task in a timely manner, I will need to ensure that my staff understands...

Conventional occupations follow set procedures and routines, and social occupations work with, communicate with, and teach people. The BCOM/275 program has provided me with many practical applications I can use to attain my career interest goals. During the career competencies exercise, I received 4 of 5 marks in the areas of adapting to change, writing, and logical thinking. Career Planning

...An organization without career planning and career development initiatives is likely to encounter the highest rate of attrition, causing much harm to their plans and programmers. Similarly without succession planning managing of vacancies, particularly at higher levels becomes difficult. There are examples of many organizations that had to suffer for not being able to find right successor for their key positions. With the increase scope for job mobility and corporate race for global headhunting of good performers, it is now a well established fact that normal employment span for key performers remains awfully short. Most importantly, the major focus of career planning is on assisting the employees achieve a better match between personal goals and the opportunities that are realistically available in the organization. Career programmers should not concentrate only on career growth opportunities. Practically speaking, there may not be enough high level positions to make upward mobility a reality for a large number of employees. Hence, career planning efforts need to pin point and highlight those areas that offer psychological success instead of vertical growth. Career planning is not an event or end in itself, but a continues process of developing human resources for achieving optimum results. It must, however be noted that individual and organizational career are not separate and distinct. A person who is not able to translate his career plan into action within the organization...

Different Stages of Career Development Process Or, Cycles of Career Development Process VI. Career Development I. Career: Meaning & Elements Definition of Career Career is a sequence of attitudes and behaviors associated with the series of job and work-related activities over a person's lifetime. Yet in another way, it may be defined as a succession of related jobs, arranged in hierarchical order, through which a person moves in an organization. As the literal definition of career focuses on an individually perceived sequence, to be more accurate, career may be either individual centered or organization-centered. Therefore, career is often defined separately as external career and internal career. External career refers to the objective categories used by society and organizations to describe the progression of steps through a given occupation, while internal career refers to the set of steps or stages which make up the individual's own concept of career progression within an occupation. For such two different approaches, in organizational context, career can be identified as an integrated pace of vertical and lateral movement in an occupation of an individual over his employment span. Career Thory

...Abstract The purpose of this paper is to explain the career development process and outline an approach of how to progress through it. I will choose a specific Career Theory from the textbook that fits into my personal beliefs of human behavior and career development. I will provide the main points of this theory and use examples from my life to demonstrate how this theory will be beneficial. I will also identify any potential weaknesses or aspects that I may disagree with. What Is a Career? A career can be defined as the "time extended working out of a purposeful life pattern through work undertaken by the person" (Zunker, 2012). This also includes "activities and positions involved in vocations, occupations, and jobs as well as to related activities with an individual's lifetime of work" (Zunker, 2012). A career should be a job that one benefits from not only monetarily but also in some personal way. People should be careful in choosing a career because most people spend over half of their lives working. If one chooses the right career than they can lead a happier life. So many people have what can be considered job instead of a career. A job where one works only to receive money can lead one to be unhappy and cause quite a bit of stress. Overtime this can have an effect on an individual’s overall health. This is why the idea of career development can be so important. What is Career Development? Career development can be defined as a process in which...

A general manager or a real estate agent are not careers I would choose because I enjoy daily changes, and completing the same tasks would make my job strenuous and boring. I would enjoy having a job where I could meet new people and offer my help to the needy. 2) Out of the two career paths, a real estate agent is more interesting. This is because I would get to travel all around my city, learn about the best school districts, become informed about dangerous neighborhoods, and then some. Factors that influence this choice would be family and finances. If you know a lot of people, chances are you will succeed in advancing in your career, which in turn will mean making more money. Family is very important to me, so having a job that I could dictate the times in which I work would be very helpful. My Career

...Content: Page Number Answer 3 Appendix 6 Refences 7 Career theory has begun since the early 20th century. As the changing nature of world, career theory experiences major transition from time to time to achieve an applicable theory. This essay will discuss and analyse the literature about career theory in the early 21st Century. Sonnenfeld (1982) has described career theory as theory which attempts to explain occupational variables such as type of job and income or psychological variables such as job satisfaction and job-related stress. Career development began from Frank Parsons’ work where he predicts a person’s career choices from the his characteristics, including self-knowledge, career planning and “true reasoning”(Patton et al, 2006). Later, several aptitude tests were used in the assessment of unemployed workers which led to the development of trait-factor approaches. Fitzgerald (1992) suggested that the trait-factor approach can be attributed to the combination of Parsons matching models with the concepts and technology of individual differences. As consequences, trait-factor theory implies on the match or fit between individual’s characteristics and work environment , emphasizing on the relationship between knowledge about self and knowledge about environment (Betz, 1989). Collin (1986) has argued that the major thrust in career theory has centred on individual rather than on contextual factors. However, Holland’s (1959) research...

Career Plan

...Career Plan Reflection Chantel Silva-Labrador BCOM/275 July 1, 2014 M. Kizzie Career Plan Reflection Career plan building is a foundation that one may take into account when marketing themselves in the employment world. Having a clear understanding as to what their individual behavior skills and competencies are, along with a better understanding of the individual’s strengths and weaknesses when critical thinking is involved can help in determining the individuals occupational interest. In conjunction to this, work cultural values and preferences can play into what groups the individual will be able to identify with on a professional level and allow them to perform and communicate more effectively. An excerpt from Career Competencies for Managing Cross-Cultural Transition by Nancy Arthur, explains that “people need to be prepared for working with others whose cultural background is different to their own…a frame work for understanding…career development practices need to be expanded…in a world that is increasingly characterized by cross-cultural transition” (Arthur, 2000). The business communications course taken by this author revealed various things from her perspective. While the career assessments have revealed additional fields of interest, the course has also given her insight as to how the various forms of communications are channeled, specific names given to various forms of arguments, and what details should be identified in various forms of fallacies. Career Plan

...2014 Career Interests and Profiler The results of my Career Plan are beyond ridiculous. After completing this necessary step in my continuing education, I took the tests with great hope and interest as to what results it would come up with for me. To state that I was disappointed is an understatement. As you, the reader of this paper, do not know me personally, you do not know my life experiences, what I have been taught or what I have learned from my teachers, mentors, coaches, and most importantly my father. Neither does the Career Plan test. Therefore, the results should be based on my answers, which would be derived from my own personal learning and experiences. Based on this, I would have thought that the Career Plan would have made choices based on my 51 years of life. It did not. I have always enjoyed working with my hands. My father was an electrician. He was also very talented with other trades, such as pipe fitting, plumbing, and just about everything related to manual labor. To say that he taught me a lot is an understatement. I learned how to fill fire extinguishers at the age of 8. I also learned basic electrical wiring and was able to do complex motor control by the time I was 18. By the time I was 21, I was a certified welder in 4 different welding processes. Most recently, I built an electrical contracting business with 15 employees, and over $2 million dollars in yearly sales. My point is that I do very well with “hands-on” work. Managing Career

...Theory I. Definition of Career Concepts • Career is a series of job posisitions that people have held during their work life. Many people look back on their careers, knowing that what they might have achieved they did achieve, and that their careers, their lives and their potential went unfulfilled. • Career management is a process that enables employees to understand and develop their career skills and interest, and to use them effectively. For the time being, career management can be briefly described as ongoing process in which an individual - Gathers relevant information about himself or herself and the world of work - Develops an accurate picture of his or her talents ,interest, values, preferred lifestyle as well as alternative occupations ,jobs, and organizations - Develop realistic career goals based on this information - Develops and implements a strategy designed to achieve the goals - Obtains feedback on the effectiveness of the strategy and the relevance of the goals Moreover, individuals will need to develop a set of career competencies that enable them to develop insight into themselves and their environment so they can navigate their increasingly unpredictable and “chaotic” careers. The specific steps in the career management process and the qualities necessary to carry them out. • Career planning is the deliberate...

...Career Enhancement Tips For First Jobbers: 3 Key Tips to Grow Your Career Simple Career Enhancement Tips You Can Start Now [pic][pic] You found your first job and you feel a little anxious. You think to yourself – “How am I going to survive through all these?” With the right attitude and guidance, you will soon look forward to doing your best. Like any other career enhancement tips, there are no guarantees for success. However, if you bring the right attitude and decide to take action then you are half way there. Nothing will stop a first jobber like you from shining at your workplace. 1. Self-discipline The value of self-discipline in a first jobber is often underestimated. Now that you are in the working world you think to yourself, “Is self-discipline overrated?” I will tell you, no. It is not overrated. I have often found new staff with good self-discipline doing better than those who are poor in it. Let me use a simple example to demonstrate this, assuming it’s a Friday and the rest of the department is planning to go out for a fun night.
