Student Background Information
General Information
Joy is a 14 year old female, entering the ninth grade. For the last two years, Joy has attended a Lutheran School, consisting of grades sixth through twelfth. Currently, Joy isn’t receive reading services, therefore, modifications and adaptations are not necessary. She participates in classroom reading activities with her peers. Joy plays the Euphonium in the band at school. Several activities outside of school include, rollerblading, swimming, dancing, and ice-skating.
Joy received speech services beginning in kindergarten and was dismissed from speech in the fifth grade. Joy’s language was assessed last summer by a speech pathologist. Joy’s attitude towards reading is not always positive. Joy stated that long words are difficult to read and wonders if she needs speech services. She feels her struggle in reading stems from being in the foster care program for many years. Approximately every three months, the family visits Barnes and Noble, adding to the wide variety of materials at home. Unless academics are provided daily, Joy doesn’t read every day at home. Joy enjoys reading comic books for teenagers and magazines about horses, dogs, and cats. Homework takes a long time to complete and causes frustrations. Joy needs assistance with the science and social studies assignments in locating words, summarizing, and finding answers. She needs peer or adult supports to complete assignments in the content area. However, if Joy is highly interested in a book or activity, she is highly…show more content… Although, she continues to struggle with reading her instructors continue to set the standard high and provide the supports Joy needs to be successful in the school. The instructors provided her the warm, welcoming environment, Joy mentioned several times throughout the interview. The instructors provide Joy the small group setting in which she thrives to make interactions from book clubs and group discussions, through sharing and accepting point of views about the literature without undermining each other’s point of view. However, social studies may continue to be the troublesome content area, due to the overload of packet work and lack of discussion. Scaffolding the information appears to be the most effective learning approach for Joy, thus providing vocabulary and meaning of words to understand the text. Learning strategies to decode multi syllable words and nontraditional text to locate and define unfamiliar words would be beneficial for
