...Page 1 Week One Assignment One New Student Coach Letter The Difference between Academic and Casual Commucation Angela R. Harris US/101 January 18, 2014 David Trebra Page 2 The difference between academic and casual communication is that during casual communication with a friend or individual you do not have to think about before speaking. Even though it may seem to be the best decision to avoid confrontation, most friends speak the first thing that comes to their minds to one another with no hesitation. Whether their opinion is positive or negative, they speak to each other as they please. Academic communication has to well thought out with caution. An individual should never want others to feel disrespected during any kind of communication with classmates and instructors also. There are certain ways to respect your classmates while having a class discussion. These simple ways will help with communication. These certain behaviors are having empathy, being tentative, and having proper responses. When empathy is involved in an interaction with a classmate, it shows similar respect for one another. In other words treat your classmates as you would want your classmates treat you. By being tentative, an individual should take caution on sharing their opinions or ideas. Last having proper responses while having a classroom discussion on certain topics in a very explanatory way. A classmate should never want to make another classmate feel that their idea or topic...

...Technical Vs Casual Writing Technical writing includes essays, papers, M.A. and Ph.D. theses, and report writing for grants and research. It is highly structured with suggestions for margin lengths, paragraph headings, research and above all a research study with experimental data, and a particular format. Whereas Casual writing has no specific rules to follow except to communicate with another person or group of people. Examples of casual writing would class notes, memos, friendly letters, diaries, and post-it notes, chatting and messaging etc. The finished paper has to be re-read in order to eliminate grammatical or typing errors, as these form part of the grading process in technical writing whereas the casual writer is free write its imagination and write as he or she would speak, without having to stick to a particular format. Sentences are mostly short and direct, with no further explanation needed. We frequently use emoticons, slang words etc while casual writing which sometimes can annoy reader or the message is not clear. Technical writing has advantage over it that the message is concise, understandable, and time saving. In casual writing there may be grammatical mistakes which lead to misunderstanding as compared to technical writing. But in my opinion writing casually is more easy and fun. You can write whatever you want to without tension of maintaining the structure and format of writing. An example of both is: Technical writing: This is to inform you that...

...Communication Research in the Philippines: Issues and Methods by Elena Pernia is a useful and practical resource on research for a novice or an expert on the field. It can serve as a step by step guide to a neophyte who is still trying to learn the ropes, be it in communication or in research. It can be a reference to the skilled researcher when he needs to think outside the box or simply state a fact. Finally, it can be a good read to people who are just interested on communication as well as research. Although the book was written under the formal writing style owing it to its academic category, at the beginning of each chapter are literary quotations from famous writers/personalities. Thus the inclusion of these excerpts grant the book a light artistic side. Furthermore, these references provide the reader a general overview of the chapter by sparking the reader’s interest on the relationship of the passage on the chapter that he is about to read. The creativity invested by the author on connecting a literary citation to an academic content is laudable. For instance, Robert Browning’s “Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s heaven for?” in Chapter 1 is a translation of why exactly this book was written. It is an allusion of the author’s message to its audience. The book does not only intend to discuss communication research per se but all the other controversies encompassing it. What makes this book distinct from any other communication research book is...

...When you write a letter to your mother, you probably use casual language, which might include short phrases instead of complete sentences or clichés or phrases that have personal meaning for your family. When you write an email or text a friend, you might shorten words or even use a group of letters to represent a word or a statement. While these shortcuts or casual language are acceptable and even expected in these types of written communication, writing for the academic world requires a more formal approach. As you develop your writing skills for the academic world, you should be aware of grammar concerns or words or phrases that should be avoided. If you work to eliminate grammar errors and to sharpen your diction, your academic work will become stronger and more powerful. Grammar Concerns: Grammar is the backbone of written communication. While there are more grammar elements than we have listed here, these represent the areas that students struggle with the most. 1. Agreement a. Pronoun/ Antecedent Agreement i. Definition: The pronoun and its antecedent do not agree in number (antecedent = the word that the pronoun refers to). ii. Example: 1. Everyone takes their books home. (incorrect) 2. Everyone takes his or her books home. (correct) 3. The students take their books home. (correct) iii. In order to eliminate awkward constructions, make the pronoun and its antecedent plural when possible. iv. Remember that if it is obvious that only one gender is...

...Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions: • Was there anything in either the University of Phoenix Student Code of Conduct or the Student Code of Academic Integrity that surprised you? If so, what was it? Why were you surprised? If not, why not? I was not surprised while reading the Student Code of Conduct. As adults we know right from wrong, and should be held accountable for our own actions. I have been a part of organizations that have codes of conduct that varied from relaxed to very strict. One organization would allow casual clothing and none formal communication. The other required a uniform, short haircut and polished boots. Communication was to be professional at all times while in garrison. Codes of conduct are there to makes sure we understand what is acceptable and what is not tolerated. They are put into place so that everyone in the environment will feel safe. The codes are there to ensure that everyone is respected no matter what their race, ethnicity, culture, or religious beliefs are. • What did you learn about the behaviors considered important for an ethical learner or student in the University of Phoenix learning community? I learned that a person’s behavior plays a very important role not only in their personal but professional life as well. To be a successful learner, you have to be open to different perspectives, able to adapt to changes, and be completely honest with yourself in areas that you may need to work...

...Casual vs. Academic Writing; The Tone of Communication Technology has given individuals the ability of communicating with other individuals or groups in a non-face to face format. In addition to the written letter we can email, text, tweet, or post on social networking sites. Since we have this less personal ability of communicating we have to consider how our words are coming across to others. This is where we need to consider the tone of our communication. Why is Tone Important? Tone is extremely important in written communication because defines the senders emotion or attitude towards the subject of the communication. This is especially important when working in a business like environment. This is true because in business you are trying to get some task accomplished or a goal achieved. Therefore the tone should be formal, courteous and always use appropriate language. Is there ever a time when a one-size-fits-all message is appropriate? Or should you tailor each and every communication you write? There are situations where tone can be altered. There are no situations where a one-size-fits-all message is appropriate. You always need to tailor your tone based on who you are communicating with and the purpose of the communication itself. An example of this is our own classroom forums. We have the main forum and the chat room. The main forum is where all postings are more formal in tone. They are postings that will be graded on and should be taken in a more serious...

...Communication Styles Worksheet You spent the past few days exploring the resources available to students at University of Phoenix, and you want to share what you learned with a friend who is interested in enrolling. Write a 150- to 200-word e-mail to your friend summarizing the resources available to students. I would share the fact of they have a write point grammar which corrects your paper for misspelled words, punctuation, accidentally confused words. Sometimes you might be to still writing casual writing instead of academic writing. Then they have review plagiarism writing so you can check your paper for that. Then they have a 3week orientation so you will learn all about online school instead of just jumping into it and being confused. They teach you all about loans and what you should take out and what you should not. A time management makes you have time for school and how to manage things like work and kids. What you should do if you are a procrastinator or even if you get bored with school like I do sometimes. Then have scholarships for every year you complete a year and when you log on to the website they have a list of scholarships. Then you can chat with other students so you will not feel alone in the classroom. You asked your facilitator to review your e-mail draft. She liked what you wrote and asked you to write a summary to post in the class forum for the other students to read. Write a 150- to 200-word summary for your class of the resources...
