...MacroEcon 11:15 I, Pencil This article I just read is all about the great pencil. Everyone knows what a pencil is and how simple of an item it truly is, but noyone really knows how much work is put into making such a simple item like that is. You probably used a pencil before you even could read or write and that’s why its so familiar to you. The basic components of this masterpiece are graphite, cedar wood, metal, and rubber. So if you had all these items, could you make a pencil? You possibly could but it is a lot easier with some help from others. There is a lot of work that goes into making a pencil, and it all starts out with a tree. The very first pencil was made out of a cedar tree in the Pacific Northwest. The people who have to cut this tree down are called loggers and it takes them some labor hours to help in the process of making the pencil. They also use many things to help them cut down the tree, such as saws, ropes, and other tools. All of those items had to be man made at some point and it all started when they drew up a plan with a pencil on how to make these tools. There is also a lot of work that goes into making graphite also. Graaphite is found in China and then taken to the factory to be mixed with clay so it can be used to write with. The eraser has components coming from all around the world to make it useful to help people erase their mistakes. The metal component in the pencil also has people coming from around the world to help make it. All of...

...First Time Rider "Are you excited?" These are the first words that escaped my mom’s lips as we arrived at the park. We began to pull into the parking lot in our Black, Ford Taurus. With my face glued to the window, my eyes began to glisten with joy as I saw the bright, colliding colors of the roller coasters twisting and turning. As I proceeded to step out the vehicle, I could hear the screams of terror and excitement. Each year my family takes a trip outside of my hometown of Detroit, MI and this particular year we decided to go to Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. My favorite part of the trip was finally riding my first roller coaster. The name of the ride was the Iron Dragon. It is not that big but then it looked really huge to me. It is Orange and Red with Black and Green riding cars. It has hills, twists and turns that terrified me at first glance. I cried the first time as I was getting on, but I was so scared that the operators let me off. Later on in the day, I finally rode it and I felt accomplished that I had finally done so. After riding, I ordered an elephant ear. The hypnotizing smell of freshly cooked dough combined with the essence of sugar and cinnamon made my mouth water. The aroma reminded me of when my mom used to make fresh cinnamon rolls for breakfast in the mornings. As the sugar and cinnamon stuck to my fingers, it felt like sand on my tongue because it was so ridged. I savored every bite of the tasty treat and even saved some for the ride...

...our family vacation the ladies always plan a special day of the week to go shopping. Of course, a vacation isn’t a vacation unless we do some shopping and site seeing. We love going to flea markets and malls looking for some great gifts for our family and ourselves. While the women are enjoying an evening out shopping the men are home grilling and watching the kids have fun in the pool. To wrap up a long day of shopping, we treat ourselves to a very nice dinner. Last but not least, THEME PARKS!!! Our family begins the day with an early rise to begin our adventure to as many theme parks we can handle for a day. My personal favorite is Disney World. I love the fairytale atmosphere where everyone can be a kid again. Next stop is Islands of Adventure/Universal Studios where the fun really begins. ...Enkidu: The Greater Hero of the Epic What makes a hero a hero? This is what I thought when I first encountered the “Epic of Gilgamesh” and found Enkidu far better than Gilgamesh. Strangely, his character outshone the main protagonist because of some reasons that may only be my own. He captured my attention because of his strong will and because of some things I can relate him with. Am I too vague or narrow to think such? Well this is an opinion worth valuing since it may steer away from the supposed preference of many to Gilgamesh' character. Apologies to fanatics or to those who oppose my arguments. I'd like to share what I think is right, and why it's right for me. INNOCENT ENKIDU “So the goddess conceived an image in her mind, and it was of the stuff of Anu of the firmament. She dipped her hands in water and pinched off clay, she let it fall in the wilderness, and noble Enkidu was created. There was virtue in him of the god of war, of Ninurta himself. His body was rough, he had long hair like a woman's; it waved like the hair of Nisaba, the goddess of corn. His body was covered with matted hair like Samugan's, the god of cattle. He was innocent of mankind; he knew nothing of the cultivated land.” (Assyrian International Books) Enkidu was first introduced in the epic of Gilgamesh as an innocent man, one with nature and though strong, he never used his strength to harm others. Son of a wild ass and gazelle, he is very primitive and eats with the animals. His encounter...

...Going to Six Flags had been a childhood dream of mine; I wished to come true one day. I have always had a desire to go. Finally, when I was 11 years old, I went to a wonderful amusement park called Six Flags! My family was driving on the highway for what seemed to be an endless amount of time. The road seemed to go on forever. My siblings were telling me about all the fun I would have on the roller coasters. As my dad was driving, joy rushed through me as I saw the Batman roller coaster. As I walked in the park I could not have been more exhilarated. When we got there, I was a bit scared to ride the coasters. The roller coasters blurred past me; they were going so rapidly! I heard screaming and laughing on the rides around me. I got my...

..."Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything" (George Bernard Shaw). Gilgamesh is the king of Uruk in The Epic of Gilgamesh, from ancient Mesopotamia. He is the strongest and most handsome of all mortals at one third man and two thirds god. Gilgamesh starts out as a selfish ruler on a quest for eternal life, but eventually learns to seek quality of life over quantity. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh endures immoderation and selfishness, but eventually transforms into a strong leader. To begin, in the first events of the story, Gilgamesh abandons his wealth and power as a king to go on a quest for eternal life, which is not for good. He believes that he can become immortal even though he is highly incapable because of his selfishness and carelessness. This shows that Gilgamesh is immoderate at this point in time. He does not understand that he is unfit to be granted immortality. "Why, O Gish does thou run about? The life that thou seekest, thou wilt not find" (The Epic of Gilgamesh). This shows that Gilgamesh will not receive immortality. He is selfish for abandoning his vast wealth and power to go on a quest for eternal life. Towards the end, Gilgamesh finally faces reality and gives up on his quest for immortality, returning to his life as the strong leader of Uruk. Gilgamesh is tested by Utnapishtim, a god. He challenges Gilgamesh to stay awake for one whole week to prove his worthiness of immortality. As soon as...

...Gilgamesh is proclaimed as an unstable compound of part god and part man of Uruk. He is the fiercest of warriors that is why he is king, among other things. The people of Uruk were tired of Gilgamesh behavior, which made them think of an idea that would destroy him. Enkidu “the wild man” was there plan to demolish Gilgamesh. They thought he would have defeated Gilgamesh, but it turns out that they have equal amount of strength. Gilgamesh ends up winning the fight and then they become good friends. The story’s structure is organized around Gilgamesh’s journey because it is not an ordinary journey and he learns life lessons. What he learns on his journey is how to cope with the loss of a dear friend, how to accept one’s own death, and how to accept there is no such thing as immortality. “My heart is sick for my friend who died” (pg. 169). Gilgamesh and Enkidu became the true friends, like no other. My interpretation of this is that they had each other backs and they loved each other like family. “They embraced and kissed. They held hands like brothers. They walked side by side. They became true friends” (pg90). Guys can become friends after a fight more so than girls because they hashed it out with their fists. That is why I believe that Gilgamesh was able to become friends with Enkidu because they handle their business. But people like Gilgamesh could only have friends who are weaker than him because it makes them feel more secure with their self. Not too long after, Gilgamesh...

... The day before Halloween was a special day for me. It wasn't only my first time riding a roller coaster, but it was also the day I overcame my fear of them. I will never forget the moment when I also overcame my fear of heights . I lost this fear on my first time ever on a roller coaster which was named the Goliath at 6 flags Great America . Most people think roller coasters are really scary and I always hear both bad and good stuff about them, but I’ve never actually been on one becuase of my fear of heights. So I thought it was time to get some friends to go with me. When I was in line waiting to ride my first rollercoaster with my friend Skyelar, her boyfriend Eric and his sister Melissa. I got really nervous and scared because I have always had a fear of heights. I watched and heard the roller coaster go speeding above me on the tracks while kids were yelling and some even cheering. I thought to myself what if the roller coaster stops upside down, or sideways, or doesn't stop at all? I was in line waiting and waiting and waiting until it was my turn to go on but it felt like it was taking forever. I have waited all fall to go to 6 flags to ride one and the time had finally arrived. I was almost to the front of the line when my heart started beating faster and faster by the minute. I kept thinking to myself, It's fine. They are just movies. Nothing bad will happen even if it is 100 feet in the air. We kept going up in line and before I knew it, it was my turn to get...

...When reading Gilgamesh, it is not uncommon for many to relate the tale's protagonist to John Campbell's theory on the twelve steps of a Hero's journey, which characterizes the typical progression of most epic stories. However, I make the claim that, as per Campbell's theory, it is not Gilgamesh himself who is the hero of the tale. Rather, Gilgamesh and his ally Enkindu combine to form the single hero of the story, with Enkindu actually meeting most of Campbell's criteria. Together, both characters symbolize one hero who embodies mankind's yearning to “incarnate unearthly covenants” (Campbell, 1968, p. 3), consistent with Campbell's views on mythology. The tale begins with an exposition describing Gilgamesh and Enkindu's daily life. According the first step in Campbell's theory, a Hero's journey must begin in an ordinary world. Enkindu fits this description perfectly. As far as a natural living is concerned, every aspect of Enkindu's life is ordinary; he lives completely off the land, his whole body was “shaggy with hair”, and he satisfies his thirst with “mere water” (Anonymous, n.d.). Gilgamesh, in contrast, does not have a conventional life. Not only is he royalty, he is “supreme over other kings”, he is the offspring of deities, and he is described as being “awesome to perfection” (Anonymous, n.d.). It is clear that the story begins with two starkly different lives, with Enkidu truly fitting Campbell's primary criteria as a Hero. Indeed, when the plot begins, Enkindu fulfills...

...Despite coming from two different parts of the world, Gilgamesh and Sunjata have many similarities within being an epic character. First, the two stories share the fundamental aspects, intrinsic upon epics. Both tales are told in a poetic format. In addition, the two tales both involve a hero who embarks on some sort of journey. For example, after witnessing the death of his good friend Enkidu, Gilgamesh has trouble coming to terms with his own mortality. In turn, he leaves Uruk hoping to find the secret to eternal life. This is comparable to Sunjata's obstacles in his quest to become king. Sunjata had to come to terms with being a lame child unable to walk properly. Furthermore, Sunjata was forced to travel to foreign kingdoms in exile while he waited for the appropriate time to regain control over his kingdom as prophesied. Both characters face their journey immediately after a tragic death; Gilgamesh witnesses his best friend Enkidu die of illness and Sunjata discovers his mother passed away prior to fighting the Sosso. Moreover, Gilgamesh and Enkido's battle with Humbaba is paralleled with Sunjata's large fight against the Sosso leader Sumaworo. Both these illustrate the similarities in the hero confronting and defeating a great enemy while navigating through treacherous obstacles along the way. Also, by the end of the tales Gilgamesh and Sunjata proved both to themselves and their to their constituents that they were worthy of leading their people. Although Gilgamesh and...

...Larsen 1 Mark Larsen Mrs. Anderson Honors English IV July 31, 2011 The Epic of Gilgamesh A man who wrestled giants, killed heavenly bulls, and even killed a herd of lions still was only man and never a god. Gilgamesh was a classic and may be one of the first epic heroes. He had many of the qualities that fit that role. On the other hand Enkidu fit more of an antihero than an epic one. The culture of the story, from what the book explains, took place at around the time of biblical times and A.D. Also there are many religious influences in the story that even intertwine with stories from the bible. You can tell that these religious comparisons came into the story because it was an oral tradition. Gilgamesh was a valiant hero who cared for his people and his companions. The story of Gilgamesh was a tremendous discovery for ancient literature. Gilgamesh was your typical epic hero. He was stronger than any man and the world. He was even two thirds god and one third man. Gilgamesh cared for his people and loved his best friend and they both never left each other’s side. Gilgamesh during his life knew no obstacles that he could not overcome. In the end he died, but he was able to fulfill his quest by finding the Larsen 2 flower that granted eternal life, still to lose it to a snake. An epic hero can’t live forever and is still only man. Enkidu was not your classic antihero, but when in comparison to Gilgamesh, he is not the epic hero. Enkidu was a fearful...

... Every time when I get sick and got the wind knocked out of me I remember the first time that I went on a roller coaster. It was a humid and muggy day at the end of the spring and in the beginning of summer. The were hoards of people all over the place and the smell of popcorn filled the air. The normal person would be excited but not me because today I would have to face my fear of going on a roller coaster. My fears of heights and being held upside down did not make a good combination when it came for confidence of going on a roller coaster. As my friends and I walk around my park one of them says how they want to go on the roller coaster. I quickly deflect this and I point to another ride and say maybe we should work our way up. Thankfully my friends agree and we walk to the smaller ride. The smaller ride was over almost as soon as we got on and all of a sudden I found myself walking with my friends to the larger ride. Out of desperation I point to another ride hoping they will agree but they denine saying that we aren’t staying here all day and that we should go on the cool rides. My heart sank deep in my chest. I wanted to tell my friends desperately that I didn’t want to go on the roller coaster but I don't want people to think I was scared of going on the roller coaster. We arrived at the coaster. It was giant will many loops and dips. However the line was very long so I thought I had time to brace myself. But it felt the line was moving at the speed of light. When...

...Zoe Wiener 9/18/13 English 101 Gilgamesh vs. Oedipus What does being powerful mean? Some may say that being powerful means knowing all things; that you do not make mistakes. Some may say that when you are great and wise you have no weaknesses. However, in the “Epic of Gilgamesh” and “Oedipus the king” this is not true. Both all mighty kings seek the very advice that they once gave. Neither one of them are perfect and do not seek help. Their stories are very different but are similar in the struggle they face. The thought of someone being powerful is complicated in the aspect that people do not go through the same things that normal other people do. Although they are portrayed as powerful, both characters share the normal weakness with all human beings. Therefore, the two stories demonstrate the weaknesses of even the most dominate humans. Gilgamesh is an almighty, half-god and half-human. In the “Epic of Gilgamesh”, Benjamin Walker starts off stating how flawless he is. The text says, “He knew the ways, was wise in all things” (p. 38). Which exemplifies his power and prudent ways. It continues on about Gilgamesh and his supremeness. Later on Gilgamesh makes a friend named Enkidu. Enkidu was, “shaggy with hair was his whole body, he was made lush with head hair, like a woman, the locks of his hair grew thick as a grain field” (p. 40). The quote shows how Enkidu was portrayed in the beginning before showing how Gilgamesh fell in love with him. Gilgamesh becomes great friends...
