Cell Team: The Cell Surface Membrane

As the manager of the "cell team", i decided that the most valuable player is the cell surface membrane. Also known as plasma membrane, the cell surface membrane consists of a double layer of phospholipids. The hydrophilic heads of phospholipids face outwards into the water while the hydrophobic tails face inwards pointing each others. The two layered structure is known as the phospholipid bilayer. Intrinsic proteins will be found at the phospholipid bilayer to allow the transport of certain substances. Besides, cholesterols are present in the bilayer to maintain the mechanical stability of the membrane. Two scientists, Singer and Nelson made a hypothesis for the structure of the plasma membrane, which they named their model "fluid mosaic model". …show more content…
The plasma membrane has the "skill" to separate the cell from external environment. It acts similar like a bag to allow organelles carry out their own functions well in the cell, without being interfered by external environment. Besides, the cell surface membrane is a selective barrier and is partially permeable, meaning not all substances from the external environment can enter the cell through the membrane. Substances such as oxygen gas, water, nutrients and minerals can diffuse into the cell. Meanwhile, waste products can be eliminated out of the cell through the plasma membrane. Different substances have different ways being transported in and out of the cell through the cell surface membrane. The ways of transportation are such as simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis and active transport. For example, water diffuses in and out of the cell through osmosis. Moreover, respiratory gases diffuse through simple diffusion. For active transport, energy in the form adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is required. Active transport is a little different as substances may move against concentration gradient. However, other ways of transportation moves down the concentration gradient. The nuclear membrane has small pores, called nuclear pores which controls and exchange between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Moreover, endoplasmic reticulum, an extension of the nuclear membrane, has sacs spreading throughout the cell. Separated process can take place in the sacs. For example, rough endoplasmic reticulum is covered with ribosomes at the membrane. Protein synthesized from ribosomes will enter the rough endoplasmic reticulum for further modification and tranport to the golgi apparatus. For smooth endoplasmic reticulum, it carries out the function as site for lipids synthesis and detoxification. Next, the golgi body, presents in the shape of a stack of pancakes, collects, processes and sorts protein molecules. One of the product made by golgi body is the lysosome. Lysosome is an organelle that contains hydrolytic enzymes. the enzyme helps to break down unwanted structures and digest bacteria in the cell. ... Shedd Aquarium Abstract Coral samples were obtained from Shedd Aquarium to investigate the symbiotic relationship between the corals and their zooxanthellae under environmental stress. The zooxanthellae DNA were extracted, amplified, and sequenced. The sequences were then analyzed using Sequencher 5.0 and BioEdit where they were aligned individually and then against other sequences found in previous literature research. The aligned sequences were run in Genbank using the BLAST function to identify the zooxanthellae at the subclade level. Further research into current literature was done with the best matched subclades to our sequences to further investigate the thermal resilience of the zooxanthellae. It was found that thylakoid membrane lipid compositions as well as lipid energy reserves are correlated to bleaching susceptibility. Clade D symbionts have higher lipid energy reserves, allotting for more thermal resilience in comparison to clade C as well as increased abundances in D symbiont types among reefs after bleaching events. Bleaching susceptibility was also found to have variation within clades. More research is needed to fully understand the coral-zooxanthellae relationship and acclimatization under stress.
