I am Cella Berardi, a 12-year-old attending Solvit Academy. Over the last few weeks, I have been learning about money, how to save it, and how to make my (possibly) future financial plan. Finally, I have been gaining knowledge and researching our debate questions. Today I am here to talk to you about why I believe that to save more money, you should monitor the big purchases and not the small ones.

For my first argument, I believe that you should monitor big purchases because if you are constantly monitoring small purchases, even though you may save more than usual, you may save at the expense of joy. To start, when she said that small purchases make you lose your money faster, that is not true. Sure, over time you may spend more, but making a big purchase drains your money faster and all at once. Also, with small purchases, you can buy something small, and then take time to budget for another small purchase, but you can’t do that with a big purchase. It’s a one-and-done deal.

Secondly, my opponent stated that small purchases are considered “shoved under the rug”, so it can cause splurges. That may be true, but from personal experience, sometimes big purchases don’t feel like they make a dent in your bank account. This subject also supports my point as much as it does hers. People sometimes think that big purchases won’t affect your bank account too much because you have “saved” enough, but it does. And sometimes we didn’t save enough.

Finally, my opponent stated that most of the time people pay attention to budgeting for big things and not small ones, but that is not 100% true. Surveys show that 49% (almost half) of people pay attention to small purchases, compare prices, and look for discounts. Therefore, small purchases are not as underlooked as we think, and maybe it’s big purchases that we need to look out
