Greek Myth
Creation/Origin myth
1)A centaur or hippocentaur is a mythological creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body and legs of a horse.Centaurs were followers of DIONYSUS( the God of Wine). These creatures were known for their violent behavior towards people(Chiron being an exception)..It is believed that Centaurs were creatures that represented chaos and barbarism, .their fights with Lapiths(CENTAUROMACHY) was frequently described in Greek sculpture, myths, stories and pottery.
The centaurs were believed to be born to Ixion( king of the Lapiths, the most ancient tribe of Thessaly) and Nephele (the cloud made in the image of Hera). Another version claims that they were born to Centaurus and Magnesian mares. …show more content…
2)CHIRON-
He is a scholar who focused on finding harmony in nature, so he learned many things about medicine, arts, philosophy, liberal arts, discipline and science that was not related to other centaurs. He was the tutor and adviser to many people including jason and Achilles.Chiron was so badly wounded in an attack in the cave that he wished to die, although he was immortal. Prometheus offered him to die and give him his immortality. The centaur died and left Prometheus being immortal.People believe that he is still alive today as a constellation.
Pholos-
He was a good friend of Heracles and provided him shelter.
Nessos made his way to Aitolian river Euenos (Evenus) after the Lapith war. Then he carried Deianeira(the wife of Heracles) across the river and attempted to violate her.Heracles shot him with a Hydra-poisoned arrow and he died.Later, Heracles also died because of the poisonous blood of the Nessos
3)Centaurs lived in the region of Magnesia and Mount Pelion in Thessaly, the Foloi oak forest in Elis, and the Malean peninsula in southern Laconia.

Ancient Greek social structure was divided by wealth. The rich/high-class people were called aristocrats or Athens. The middle-class people were called metics. The lower class people called freedmen. The slaves were in the least class and treated poverly.
Ancient Greek people believed in gods and goddesses ,Cosmogony(universe), Mortals, Sacred writings, Priesthood, Rites, Religious art, and iconography(he visual images and symbols used in a work of art or the study or interpretation of these.). Also, many Centaurs are depicted in ancient art work and mentioned in sacred writings.
5)Our perceptions and judgements of others might not be true. They might make bad decisions but it doesn't make them bad people.
I choose this thematic statement because Centaurs were prejudged . Everyone thought that these creatures were rude and arrogant without giving them a chance .while gods heroes and many people had so much respect for chiron they forgot that he was a centaur and accepted him.Just because their ancestors or community did wrong things does not mean everyone is wrong.they were also judged because of their half human and half animal body

Satyrs In The Odyssey

...Although Satyrs and Centaurs are both half-human, or half-male, and half-animal, they are both different from each other. Powell’s Classical Myth, Buxton’s The Complete World of Greek Mythology, and in Euripides’ The Cyclops, gave us a clear difference between the two. Even though they are both half-human, half-animal, they have a difference in the way they act. The two may be very similar, but act completely different. In Euripides’ The Cyclops, Odysseus asked Silenus to sell him some food because him and his men are hungry. Although they did not have any money, he offers to pay Silenus in wine. Once he mentions the wine Silenus becomes frantic and is curious where the wine is. Once he gets a single drink of wine he becomes care free and starts to become comical. Odysseus asks of some cheese or lamb and Silenus replies, “Right Away, I don’t give a hoot for any master. I would go mad for a cup of wine. I’d give away the herds of all the...

The Phoenix, The Legend Of The Phoenix

...Pegasus, the Greek God Zeus transformed Pegasus into a constellation when it made its way into the sky. 5.) The Greek legend states that Chimera had a physical appearance of a lion, goat and a serpent and it was a complex creature. She was believed to be a ferocious blaze eating monster and was a terrifying looking beast. Legends say that not only Chimera was a frightening monster, but it was also a threatening opponent in battles. Chimera was able to use the powers of all three (the lion, goat and the serpent) and as a result it made it extremely powerful. Greek mythology narrates that Chimera was actually a female and was then known as “Chimaera”, a term which the Greeks used for a she goat. It is believed that Chimera met its destiny at the hands of Bellerophon, a young warrior, who slayed this monster with the help of Pegasus, the popular winged...

Hermes Archetypes

...Riordan describes Hermes as a former troublemaker, and as someone who is eternally busy delivering messages and handling any kind of business involving travel (Meet the Greek Gods). Although Hermes is now a reformed troublemaker, he is still quite mischievous, helping Percy and his friends sneak out of camp after they were told not to (The Sea of Monsters, 104). This particular trait of Hermes is also visible in his children, Travis and Connor; throughout the series, they are constantly playing pranks on others, and often have a desire to steal things, such as when they gave away a t-shirt sprayed with Centaur blood, which is like acid, and when they wanted to steal strangers’ phones (The Titans Curse 98; The Last Olympian 171). In the series, Hermes is driven by his desire to save his son, Luke; this desire occasionally causes him to take actions and make decisions he may not have...

...Sarcophagus with Scenes from the Life of Achilles; artist anonymous; 180-220 AD; marble, very high-relief carving, some elements are sculpture in the round; 52x83x57 in; well preserved with some damages on the right and left sides. I. This is a three-dimensional rectangular object with a massive lid that has a shape of a flat couch with two figures reclining on it. Even though both figures look alike and their faces are unfinished, they are slightly different. The figure in the front is a female. She has long hair, small breast, and a round face. The other figure is a male. He has a beard; details of his face are more masculine and angular. Both figures have long clothes. All four sides of the rectangle are carved. The back is not visible because the object is placed up against the wall. The central figure on the front relief is a man holding a big shield. He steps into a chariot with two horses and listens to another man who probably shows him a direction. Another naked male figure is on the ground. He seems to be tied up to the chariot. There are other male figures on this relief; some of them are naked, and others are dressed. They all are in different movement postures. On the right side is a relief of a young naked male with a big shield. His right leg is in front; his head is turned to the opposite direction. He is probably leaving and is looking at those who stays. A woman puts her hands around the young man's neck and falls on her knees. On the right side is a...

Foundations of Mythology

...Smith Foundations of Mythology Myths are the tales that human beings pass one from one generation to another. The interesting fact is that in the most cultures myths are similar based on concerns and everyday life issues. Myths can be considered as the heritage from our ancestors and the way they understood the cosmos, its fundamental questions. An example of a common myth would be about black cats being evil or will bring bad luck if they cross your path in the wrong direction. Another one would be opening an umbrella indoors. The whole term myth can be used and references to something that is imaginary, false or simply a legend. Over the century people have created a host of myths that permit man to explain the world and understand his own existence through tales and allegories. Each society identifies itself with a creation myth. We continue to create myths today. The main overall idea of what is Mythology, is that they are stories which in symbolic form have encoded in them some of the answers to the great philosophical and religious questions that people have come up with through the ages. Whether strictly science or religiously based, research and studies have shown that an individual, regardless of his or her gender, orientation, skin colour, or national background will have the same mindsets given the same experiences and surroundings. Many Greeks hold to the myths as real. Myth mixes real detail with the magical. We...

Report on Chicago Art Museum Greek Classics

... I browsed over several sections, like the Indian and Native American, but I spent most of my time in the Ancient Mediterranean area, chiefly the section displaying ancient Greek art. My task was to find several different items, each representing an aspect of Greek civilization. After a process of elimination, I chose four items that I felt best depicted the daily lives of Greeks in the past. In this paper I will attempt to briefly identify them. Part I- An item of custom The first item I chose was one that showcased Greek cultural norms. For this I chose a grave stele depicting a small child playing with his pets. According to the museum, this artifact was made sometime around 330 B.C.E., so it is from the transition time between the Classical and Hellenistic Periods. It was found in Athens and the museum identification number is 88.2012. It was donated anonymously (AI info). Relatively intact, the image on its front is very easy to interpret. It is very clearly a young Greek boy, playing with his pet dove and dog. He holds the dove outstretched in his right hand and the dog appears to be jumping towards it, perhaps out of excitement. This stele is about 3-4 feet high and maybe a foot and a half wide. At one point it was painted, because there is a very feint trace of the colors red and blue. In Greek culture, stele had several uses. Some like those of the god Herma, were used as marker points and had information on distances and where you were at the time. Others were decorated...

Gods and Human Relationships

...of Greek mythology was dated back to around the time of the Trojan War. Homer and Hesiod were two of the most well-known writers of Greek mythology and epic poetry. Although a lot of information is debatable about him, Homer was the first known person to write Greek literature. Homer has many claimed birthplaces. Among the most popular are Smyrna and Ionia. His main theme was the Trojan War between the Greek and Trojans. Even though he may have been blind, Homer is considered responsible for two of the most well-known books of Greek myth; Iliad and the Odyssey and Homeric Hymns which were short poems celebrating the various gods. The Iliad is a story of the siege of the city of Troy during the Trojan War. The Odyssey is the story of Odysseus, a warrior, and his ten year journey from Troy to Ithaca after the fall of Troy in the Trojan War (“The Life and Work of Homer”). Hesiod is along the side of Homer when it comes to the creation of the Greek gods. He was said to be born after Homer. He was a shepherd who worked in the mountains of Helicon. He got his inspiration to write epic poetry from an experience he had on the mountain where he met the Muses that appeared before him in a mist after the death of his father. Two of his most famous works were Theogony and Works and Days. Theogony is the story of the creation of the Greek gods and their evolution. His second story, Works and Days, was about the struggle between him and his brother over the property of his father Greek mythology...

Hercules

...Hercules is thought to be one of the world’s greatest hero. There are children’s movies about him, but they all have a happy ending. Hercules, originally born “Heracles” lived a short cruel, yet heroic life. “The 12 Herculean tasks he performed over a period of 12 years have been immortalized in everything from classical poetry to Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion.” (French 1). Hercules, in Greek mythology, was a hero known for his strength and courage and for his legendary adventures. Hercules is the Roman name for the Greek hero Heracles. He was the son of the god Zeus and a human mother Alcmene, wife of the Theban general Amphitryon. Hera, Zeus' jealous wife, was determined to kill Hercules, and after Hercules was born, she sent two great serpents to kill him. Hercules, while he was still a baby, strangled the snakes. Hercules conquered a tribe that had been demanding money from Thebes. As a reward, he was given the hand in marriage of the Theben princess Megara and they had three children. Hera, still filled hatred of Hercules, sent him into madness, which made him kill his wife and children. In horror and remorse at what he did, Hercules was about to kill himself, but he was told by the oracle at Delphi that he should purge himself by becoming the servant of his cousin Eurystheus, king of Mycenae. Eurystheus, urged by Hera, planned as a punishment the 12 impossible tasks, the "Labors of Hercules." Eurystheus first ordered Hercules to kill the Nemean lion...

The first is called the Old Testament and the second portion is called the New Testament. THESE MAIN QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED IN GENESIS 1- Why do we live? 2- Why do we die? 3- Why does the evil exist? CREATION IN 1ST VERSION - God created man in his own image. - God created the man and female at the same time - God created man after he ended all his work. - The first creation story says that grass and trees were created before the sun, moon and stars, whereas we know that stars were created first, then the earth and the moon. Only later was it possible for grass and trees to evolve. Finally, God created man in his own likeness- there is no suggestion of any evolution here. - God let man dominion over everything.(ıt shows the importance of man) - God said man “ be fruitful, be multiply and replenish the earth. CREATION IN 2ND VERSION - There was a garden in Eden and he put the man whom he had formed. - The was a tree of knowledge of good and evil ● So we understand that in 2nd Version, there is Good an Evil. - The second creation story says that a man was created first, before any other animal, whereas scientists tell us that many animals existed before humans, who are of relatively recent origin. This version also says that every plant of the field was...

When Hercules settles down and has a family, Hera kills Hercules’ wife and kids with fire bolts. From that point on Hercules vows himself to help stopping mankind's suffering from the gods.
