The first major plot point in the book is the opening scene that sets off a consequent chain of significant events. As the readers we witness the massacre of a family, beginning with the detailed description of a man’s knife followed by an illustration of a set of stairs. Blood has been spilled, and the man named Jack has killed... all but one family member, a baby quidnunc who left his crib to go exploring the graveyard. The spirits of the graveyard protect him by leading Jack away, and make the decision to take care of the baby boy because they knew he had lost his family.
