Hello Class,

For this weeks forum post, I have chose an article I came across on Forbes.com. I am going to discuss a couple of topics within this article which discuses, what a Stanford oncology doctor refers to as "common misconceptions in medicine" (chan, 2016) in regards to a healthy diet. Dr. David Chan makes multiple statements in his addressing of these misconceptions in which I agree based of what we have leaned so far, as well as completely disagree and believe he manipulates words in order to create more dramatic topics. Dr. Chan's first statement was, "The long standing advice to avoid saturated fats and eat more carbs is wrong" (chan, 2016). I refer to this statement as an "attention getter", meaning it is a statement that goes …show more content…
As we have been taught, carbs are essential for our diet. They are the largest contributor of energy for the body to use and whole grains have been linked to a decrease in LDL. It was around the 1970's where the majority of Americans started to consumed their carbs in the for of refined, or sugary form. To make a statement that all carbs are culprit the obesity epidemic is completely false and deceiving. Carbohydrates remain the largest portion of the recommended macro nutrient ratios, and as we know, these carbs should be consumed in the form of whole grain, fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, we know now that increased consumption of saturated fats have been linked to certain cancers like colon cancer. We also know that a portion of someone predestined cholesterol numbers are indeed linked to genetics, but to promote an increased consumption of saturated fats based of this notion alone is irresponsible. We know today that ones diet plays a much larger part in their health rather than genetics …show more content…
Chans next statement, "The recommendations that taking multi-vitamin supplements is good for us is wrong" (chan, 2016), happens to be the only one I would personally agree with. He states that there have been multiple large scale studies that have shown that multi-vitamins do not contribute to an improvement of health. He also states that the vitamin industry in America is a multi-billion dollar, unregulated industry. Finally stating that, consuming a well balanced diet containing fruits and vegetables is a far better source of vitamins, and that taking vitamins is no substitute, especially for drinkers and smokers. This coincides what what we have been learning so far in the respect that, creating a diet consisting of a variety of nutrients from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy and lean meats is plenty sufficient in delivering nutrients. It is only a small percentage of people who benefit from taking multi-vitamins, specifically people who have dietary restrictions that can not provide them with certain

..."Improving Organizational Performance" Simulation Summary Airdevils Inc. is located in Salt Lake City, Utah founded by Celsey Evans in 1995. There are 115 employees who provide aerial stunts throughout different industries. However, in the last two years Airdevils customers have not been satisfied with their performance and it has also been brought to Celsey Evans that job satisfaction among the employees is low. Job Satisfaction There has been a drop in performance for Airdevils stunt performers. It has been said that employees do not have job satisfaction. Employees were given a survey to determine the reason why job satisfaction was low. The results of the survey were that stunt performers are not receiving what they joined the company for and the stunts are routine and do not excite the performers. The recommendation for the organization is for Celsey Evans to possibly send stunt performers for training in more thrilling stunts given what the budget can allow. Budget Airdevil performers are dissatisfied with the organization and see the organization as inflexible and rigid. A set budget has been put together by Celsey Evans allowing the company to recommend interventions for the stunt performers. Given the budget, some interventions Airdevils can participate in are training in other stunts, enter new line of stunts, and performance based incentives. My Job

...Improving Organizational Performance at AirDevils Linking job satisfaction and organization productivity directly to an employee’s psychological state within the workplace is possible using theory of motivation. Rectifying psychological causes such as dissatisfaction motivate employees to perform tasks well, thus leading to productive behavior. Rectifying psychological factors can remove workplace stressors and relieve issues employees face in the workplace. AirDevils is a company full of dissatisfied and stressed employees. Although they may seem linked, the cause for dissatisfaction is not the cause for stress or vice versa as two specific groups make up the company. The performers make up one group and the supporting crewmembers make up the other. Dissatisfied performers create a downward spiral in productivity, and stressed crewmembers are unavailable or missing from work. The job characteristics theory of motivation is applicable to both groups to create improved job satisfaction and organizational productive by lowering stress. Improving the performers behavior by incorporating new stunts in routines can create a better aerial performance. In turn, AirDevils may begin to win awards in competition with the new routine, leading to improved job satisfaction. Some crewmembers are also aspiring performers, but too many are not able to keep pace because of injury and job stress. To reduce dissatisfaction and stressors, AirDevils must alleviate problems between performers and...

...being represented by scenes and then shift to the global one. As an independent film, Made in Hong Kong shows the anxiety and confusion of marginalized youth in the society, they are a group of people who may easily be ignored by the society. Fruit Chan has successfully depicted the local issues through the film by using visual motif, monologue, settings and graphic blocking. He has brought up the youth problem, the grass-rooted family problem and the identity problem arose by authority change in 1997 to the society. In the 90s, a rise of gangster movies certainly promoted a sense of heroism for the youth. The society idealized the images of being a gangster and overlooked the panicky side of the youngsters. The main characters Moon, Ah Lung, Ah Ping and Susan in the movie represent the problem youth in the society. The monologue of Moon at the very beginning unveils the failure of educational system in Hong Kong. As an exam-oriented society, elites with good academic results are highly praised but for those cannot obtain high marks are doomed to failure. Moon being the later one leaves school at the early stage and winds up being a gangster. However, students who go to school are not free from problems associated. Comparing Hong Kong and Hollywood Film Industries

...Angelo Cupani Film 262 4/6/14 Hong Kong: An Industry Born on a Budget Hong Kong has often been referred to as the “Hollywood of the East”. Although there are qualities of the Hong Kong film industry, which do indeed resemble those of Hollywood, implying that Hong Kong’s film industry is simply a second-tier version of Hollywood’s is an injustice to the unique industry model that Hong Kong has developed since the mid 20th century. Multiple factors, namely economic, have driven Hong Kong filmmakers to adapt different methods of production and exhibition than Hollywood filmmakers, resulting a in a distinct style of cinema that maximizes profits and controls costs, and has proven itself successful. Many of the unique practices of Hong Kong cinema stem from the industry’s tendency to push films through the production process much more quickly than the typical Hollywood film, and on a much smaller budget. The pace at which Hong Kong films are made is unmatched, proven by director Tsui Hark who went from script to release in less than two moths with his film Chinese Feast. The speed at which these films are released is driven by exhibition. With most production companies throughout Hong Kong film history being vertically integrating, including Shaw Brothers and Cinema City, the goal has been to push as many films through their own theaters as quickly as possible, with rapid turnover rates. Unlike Hollywood films, which can often stay in theaters for a month or longer, Hong Kong...

Improving Organizational Performance Paper

...Improving Organizational Performance Kyle Petty PSY/428 July 27, 2011 Dr. Jerry Punch Improving Organizational Performance The Airdevils is a stunt organization whose quality of performance has plummeted in past two years. The founder, Celsey, has made some assumptions that the performance decline is a reflection of the heavy recruitment throughout the year and the unfamiliarity between the team members. Celsey was confident that the team members of Airdevils would resolve matters with passage of time; however, after two years the problems surfaced, matters have become worse and the time had come to figure out the root cause of the problems. Celsey administered the Job Description Index (JDI) survey to Airdevils employees and the results reflected a very low-level of job satisfaction, especially the stunt performers (Apollo Group Inc, 2005). The organization, through an outside consulting firm progresses through four phases to address and improve employee’s job performance. In phase one the Airdevils hired Dream Teamworks (DT) to assist in identifying the reason for the low job satisfaction in the stunt performers group. After interpreting the JDI survey DT concluded the cause of low job satisfaction among stunt performers was the lack of exciting challenges in their current job profiles. The main driver for this is the rigid organizational structure that has evolved...

Hong Kong Movie

...According to Stuart Hall, there are two kinds of identity: identity as being (a sense of unity and commonality) and identity as becoming (a process of identification, which shows the discontinuity in our identity formation). The first one is necessary, but the second one is truer to our postcolonial conditions. (Hall) Hong Kong identity is not fixed; it changes from time to time and is determined by the social-political changes. (Jonathan) Mass media (films) can somehow construct some kinds of ideologies or identities and indicate the attitude and value behind identity in a society. (Ping-Kwan) In this paper, we will investigate how 1970s’ films, New Wave Movie in 1980s and 1990s’ films reflect the social changes and construct HK identity. After the 1967’s Riots, Hong Kong people had to face keen competition and social conflict and instability. Most of them had to face great pressure and discontent was widespread in the society. (李以莊) Watching movies such as “One-Armed Swordsman” (獨臂刀) [1967] and “The Big Boss” (唐山大兄) [1971] become one of the tools or ways for them to vent their pressure and emotions. Moreover, in the early 70s, the society was rife with corruption. The corruption of the Hong Kong police and the government officers became a climate of Hong Kong. This phenomenon was corrosive to both the foundations of society and relationship between the police/government officers and the public. (Pak Tong) The Hong Kong government was therefore urged to found ICAC...
