The comb on the head of chicken is a means of preserving the peck order, and a submissive bird raising its head too high would be pecked by one or more its superiors until its head was lowered. The more productive strains tend to be more cannibalistic, even sometimes had to put a sack over the extremely productive one. In order to reduce chicken mortality due to cannibalism , the chicken farmers use debeaking, which doesn’t interfere with the formation of the peck order but reduces the efficiency of beak as a weapon. The debeaking process make the chicken subject considerate trauma resulting in a temporary weight loss and the retardation of egg production for at least a week. The debeaked chicken would enter a permanent regression or own its deadly weapon again if the beak is cut too short or too long. Compare to debeaking operation, ODI contact lens which would cause cataract to poultry is the product to actually confront the cause of chicken cannibalization rather than just minimize its effects. And the red color environment caused by lenses affects the chicken’s ability to act out its aggressions. The installation of lens doesn't result trauma to the chicken as debeaking does, and it could install...

...me both got up got our stuff and put it inside the car and headed off to the scout hut. When we got there Cade was already there waiting for everyone else to get there. When we got out I said “Cade, are you ready?” and of course we all know what he said “Yep.” I just started to walk around waiting for Mr. Valcaro to get here until Cades dad just got a text saying Mr. Vacaro forgot to get some paperwork and it will be another 10 minutes before he gets there. It was the slowest ten minutes of my life because I was so eager to get on the road. Finally he got here and I said “it took you guys long enough!” Everyone started laughing as we got our stuff in his suburban. I gave my mom a hug goodbye and we were off on the road. I rested my head on the side of the window not listening to anyone’s conversation exempt for the guns and roses that was playing on the radio. When we got there we unloaded everything went through checking and sat there for about 30 minutes waiting for our flight to board. When the flight attendants called for boarding I got up half asleep and boarded and but my day pack in the holder and crashed for the rest of the flight. We departure at 6:00 and got to Chicago at 9. I asked my dad If I could get something to eat and he said sure. We both went to café looking place and I got a egg and cheese sandwich and went back to where our plane is supposed to take departure. It...

...Garrison, president and chief executive officer of Optical Distortion, Inc. (ODI), had asked Ronald Olson, marketing vice president, to develop a marketing plan for ODI’s new and only product—a contact lens for chickens.1 While contact lenses serve mainly to improve human eyesight, the lens developed by ODI was made to partially blind the chickens. Garrison explained: Like so many other great discoveries, our product concept was discovered quite by accident. In 1962 a chicken farmer in Arizona had a flock of chickens that developed a severe cataract problem. When he became aware of the problem, he separated the afflicted birds from the rest of the flock and subsequently observed that the afflicted birds seemed to eat less and were much easier to handle. So dramatic was the difference that a poultry medical detailman visiting the farm, rather than being asked for a cure, was asked if there was any way to similarly afflict the rest of the flock. It has not proved possible chemically or genetically to duplicate the reduced vision of the chickens, resulting from the cataracts, but a chicken wearing the ODI lenses has its vision reduced enough to obtain the good behavior the Arizona farmer observed. This behavior has important economic implications for the chicken farmer. By the end of 1974 the ODI lens had been tested on a number of farms in California and Oregon with satisfactory results, and Garrison was convinced that “the time has come to stop worrying about the product...

...found a strong correlation between poor eyesight in chickens and a decrease in the amount of food eaten and their mortality rate due to cannibalism. Olson was so impressed by his findings that he began to seek a way to intentionally impair the vision of his chickens, so as to duplicate the results he found. Twelve years later, Olson, along with his Optical Distortion, Inc. business partner, Daniel Garrison, tested and marketed a product that they had developed: contact lenses for chickens. While it may sound unconventional, these contact lenses provide a needed alternative for farmers seeking to decrease chicken cannibalism without the negative effects of the alternative, debeaking. Chickens, like many animals, have a social hierarchy that is adhered to by all members of the flock, called a peck order. Pecking can occur if a submissive bird enters a dominant bird’s territory, and submissive birds are pecked immediately if they raise their heads. Pecking can cause the submissive birds to eat less food and thus produce less eggs. Pecking sometimes continues until the chickens become cannibalistic. Cannibalism amongst chickens is higher when the birds are kept in cages and thus becomes a major concern for farmers. According to our farmer analysis the cost of debeaking per 10,000 chickens is $77,800.04. Even with the added cost of investing in ODI’s contact lenses, farmers would spend only $73,813.33 per 10,000 chickens, if they switched to contact lenses, an annual savings...

...The Red Wheelbarrow so much depends upon a red wheel barrow glazed with rain water beside the white chickens. -- William Carlos Williams (1923) To Paint a Picture Just as the opening line of William Carlos William’s 1923 poem “The Red Wheelbarrow” reads, “So much depends.” So much depends on the reader’s interpretation of this poem. How was the author intending his work to be read? One can argue that Williams wished his audience to paint a mental picture of the poem, and then draw their own conclusions based on the imagery contained therein. The poem, consisting of only sixteen words, follows a basic metrical structure. It consists of eight lines, which are broken into four verses. Each verse consists of a dimeter, followed by a monometer. At first reading, the student may want to read the two lines of each verse together as one. Reading the poem in this fashion does not bring attention to its individual parts. The student should focus on the lineation of the poem while reading it, and follow the metrical structure that is laid out. By slowing down and taking in the poem on line at a time, the reader will more easily be able to paint a mental picture of the poem. This seems to have been how the author intended the poem to be read. The imagery of “The Red Wheelbarrow” can be compared to that of a classic painting. The painting is easy on the eyes, nice to look at. If the viewer can picture himself inside the canvas setting, he may be able to...

...show on Wednesday, September 19 started with Eric Andre running out on stage throwing beer, sandwiches, what seemed to be chicken carcasses, and many other objects out into the crowd as he jumped off stage and began to run through the dense mass of people pushing, shoving, and simply making a riot amongst the observers. He disappeared and shortly after appeared back on stage fully naked running around the set. Things slowly settled down and it was time for his first guest, Russell Brandt. The crowd grew eager and when he finally came on stage, it was clear that it was in fact not he. Either that, or Russell Brandt changed his image to that of a malnourished Philadelphian homeless person. Once on stage “Brandt” sang a song, in what seemed to be English accompanied by a plastic guitar and a 2 liter bottle filled with some unknown foamy liquid that eventually also ended up in the crowd. His next two guests consisted of a local juggler and Freeway, who is a native rapper of North Philadelphia. It was clear that neither of the two were aware of what they were actually participating in. Right as the juggler was about to begin his performance, the lights dimmed and Doc Chicken emerged. This was nothing more than a rubber chicken with a stethoscope that was dropped from the ceiling, but it caused the crowd erupt in a frenzy shouting “Doc Chicken, Doc Chicken,” all while fist pumping and dancing. During this insanity, the juggler on stage clearly had no idea what was ensuing so...

...A Walk into the Forbidden Forest (A true story) By Jacob Conteh, Editor, Diaspora Dispatch News My heart jumped out of its cage. My greasy knees danced in disunity, my lips quivered, my mouth dried up and my hair rose to the top of the trees. My forehead dripped with sweat and my sweaty palms trembled. My eyes refused to blink, and my lips quivered. There, a few feet in front of me, sat a killer python coiled up to the size of a huge tractor tire with eyes pointing at us and tongue salivating with hunger. I motioned to my little brother Donald and pointed my fingers to the monster. We tiptoed backwards for a minutes, turned around and ran for our lives. My people, the Thaymnehs (Temnes), are a warrior tribe that reportedly emigrated from a region called Futa Jallon in present-day Guinea to Sierra Leone. My village, Patfu Mayawa, is a farming village of about 200 hundred inhabitants in central Sierra Leone. While most Thaymnehs are either Muslims or Christians, some Thaymnehs sometimes mix their religion with their traditional beliefs. Among those beliefs is that there are gods who dwell on forests and mountains. For the people of Patfu Mayawa, my hometown, they believe there are “devils” that dwell at Chainkafutu, a thick virgin forest hill that towers above the village. Before each of the many celebrations at Patfu that signaled girls’ and boys’ initiation to adulthood – the Poro for boys and Bondo for girls - the village headman would walk the half...

...thought the illness was from the stench of the crabs. One day when Pelayo went to the beach to throw some crabs back, he discovered something in the mud. The movement was an old man who had wings. Pelayo was told that it was an angel sent to take their son away, and they were advised to kill the old man. They did not kill the man; however, they found out that hundreds of pilgrims were willing to pay to see the angel. Elisenda and Pelayo put the man in the chicken coop and decided to charge five cents for people to see the angel. The curious came from far away. Less than a week there rooms were filled with money. After that, the people had begun to hear about a woman who had been changed into a spider because she disobeyed her parents. The spider-woman told her story to people and they listened with amazement. When she was a child she snuck out of her room to attend a dance. On her way home she was struck by a bolt of lightning that changed her into a spider. She was a frightful tarantula the size of a ram and with the head of a sad maiden. The only nourishment she got came from the meatballs that nice souls tossed into her mouth. People took to her story better than the old man who had...

Chickens self-select a ranking by 8-10 weeks of age with a complete pecking order by the age of sexual maturity. Birds can identify other birds and, through fighting and pecking, establish a hierarchical social organization. It is believed that the comb on the head of the chicken is key to recognition. Dominant-type chickens carry their heads high; submissive birds keep their heads low. If a submissive bird raises her head too high, she is immediately pecked by a superior. Pecking can increase...

...feet. Come later and you’ll see the cocks taken out of their cages to be stroked and caressed by local men who sit together, enjoying the last rays of sunshine while discussing the qualities of their proud and elegant birds. Bali, like many other nations, has banned cock fighting as a cruel sport, although the practice is still allowed on the Island of the Gods for ceremonial purposes. These fighting birds are as much a part of Balinese Hindu rites as the burning of incense and giving offerings to the gods. Breeding the roosters, some of which boast feathers with a golden luster that evokes songket, takes place up in the cool, mountainous region above Gianyar. In a small hamlet called Malet, the birds are big business. Village head I Ketut Ludea says that while Malet raises about 600 roosters every year, most are sold to other communities nearby. The rest are used for local ceremonies. “In our village we must sacrifice birds before turning the soil to plant our crops, so we need around 250 birds for these ceremonies,” Ludea says. “We can sell the other 350 birds, which does not make this our most important revenue for the village, but a side job that many of us use for the education of our children.” Such children include Ledea’s 12-year-old grandniece, who studies English twice a week in nearby Tampak Siring on the back of this additional income. As Clifford Geertz noted in his seminal essay “Deep Play: Notes from a Balinese Cockfight”, too much is at stake...
