One may believe that as an adult, he or she, is past the stage of storytelling. Children spend their days in a world of make-believe, dreaming of tall tales, love, despair, loss and more plot filled travesties. A woman may not even realize that she spent the last 5 minutes dazing off into oblivion after reading about a love story – wondering herself what it would be like to be that character. Whether it is spoken word for all to hear or the movie reels silent within the mind, people are still creating stories every day; just like children, but perhaps with a little less need to share their plot with everyone in sight. A lot of these day-dreams or night-dreams are mainly centered on fiction, because our minds feed off fiction the most. What is it about a catchy story-line, suspense-ridden plot, or visioning a land far, far away that captivates the masses – as an adult? …show more content…
All of these characteristics set a foundation for lively stories. Although these stories can range from light and happy to dark and peril. “Children don’t need to be tutored in story”. (Gottschall 23) This is fascinating generation after generation. Creativity is thought to be a gift, but it is one that needs to be practiced. Children are not practicing to be great authors one day. Children are simply playing and pretending; using their creativeness to do what they do best. When one only hears the name of the author or the title of the novel, some associations appear almost automatically. These associations can later on influence the reader’s impressions or even – to some degree – the analysis of a chosen literary work. Thus, when the name of Marquez is evoked, the very first thing to come to one’s mind is probably ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ and – for some readers – the term of ‘magic realism’. Every other Marquez’s work must ‘take into an account’ such inevitable context. Then, the title also determines reader’s expectations. In the case of ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ – the subject of this essay – all enormous tradition of love literature passes in the background, due to the novel’s title. To what degree these associations help in the understanding of Marquez’s famous book it is to be discovered. To begin with, obviously not all of the Colombian writer’s works have been created in the magic realist mode.
