Children’s Story
ECE 313 Collaboration with Parent’s and Community
November 17, 2015

Shane has a difficult time separating from his mother each morning. At drop off, he clings to her and screams uncontrollably. After she leaves, Shane continues to scream and cry until I am able to soothe him.
A lot of children experience this type of anxiety from separating with their parents. I plan on having both parents and the child come into the class before the first day so they can get comfortable and familiar the classroom. I expect some children to have a hard time separating from their parents because some has never been away from them since birth. For Shane I will talk to mom before the first day and ask her if it is possible for her to drop him off and leave quickly instead of hanging around. I will explain her that hanging around will only make him upset longer. I will also practice fun ways to say bye with Shane that will eventually calm him when parting. Majority of my students are four some are five so I think pairing them up with a buddy in the class will be helpful. Their buddy will be there when they need a hug or even encouraging words when they are upset. I want to do whatever I can to make sure the students in my class are comfortable but I also do not want them to think it is ok to throw tantrums. After Shane is calmed down I will invite him to join the rest of the class. I will give him a hug or let him know in some other way how he can get my attention when his behavior is good. I do think that eventually Shane will get better. If his parents and I work together on both ends he will know that he will not get attention when he is acting out. I will continue doing this throughout the whole school year so Shane will continue to do better.

I think this is a Montessori approach. I say this because it meets the child were they are already and it allows
