...Justifications In both Genesis and Theogony, the storyline revolves around gods that rule over their realm. A major part of their everyday lives consist of the gods settling quarrels, trying to win a power struggle, or other adventures. It is during these experiences that the gods true dispositions comes out in the form of how they wield however much power they possess and how it affects those under them. Judging by their nature of power and authority, and the state of social order around them, God from Genesis is a more just leader than the gods from Theogony. The highest ranking gods in Theogony, at first Kronos then Zeus, use their power and authority in unjust ways, dismantling the social order around them. Kronos, the first god at the head of Mount Olympus was continuously insecure about the safety of his throne. His primary concern was that one of his children would overthrow him and succeed him. “He had in mind that no proud son of Heaven Should hold the royal rank among the gods Except himself... Therefore he never dropped His guard, but lay in wait and swallowed his children” (Hesiod 38). Kronos possessed the power to eliminate any possible inheritor to the throne by simply eating them. Kronos avoids a clash between gods for power by perpetrating in a unjust actions solely for his own benefit. As a result, the gods around him became disloyal to him as Rhea, the god who bore the children that Kronos ate asks her parents Earth and Heaven to “bring the Fury down on...

...political one. Marriage is considered to be a sacred union between man and woman but in America, everyone has the right to pursuit happiness and everyone has the free will. It can have a positive and negative effect on the society depending on the type of society on which people are living in. Reduction in Marriage Benefits For many years now, same sex marriage has been the top of leading religious and secular controversies in America. It is a complex and strange topic. People have both opposing and favorable view points for gay marriages. One of the many reasons why states provides many benefits to people who get marry is because marriage by its nature provides the normal, stable, affectionate and moral conditions for the upbringing of the children. This helps in completing the nation and strengthening the society and making the state stronger. Same sex marriages or gay marriages do not provide such conditions and the main purpose is the personal gratification of two individuals whose blending is barren by...

...from these misconceptions. In order to decrease the U.S. populace agita regarding the various Muslim cultures, it is important for Americans to have a better understanding of other religions including Islam. I believe three of larger misconceptions are: Islam condones violent acts, Islam is intolerant of other religions and that Muslims worship a different God. One of most misunderstood beliefs is that Islam condones violent acts and supports various types of “Jihad”. Karen Armstrong notes that Islam means “submission” or the total surrender of oneself to God, while the word Jihad in Arabic, means "struggle.” Jihad appears frequently in the Qur'an and, in Armstrong’s text; its common usage implies the "striving in the way of Allah". Unfortunately, most Americans have the generally understanding that the term “Jihad” is referring to holy war on behalf of Islam. As provided in the narrative of Professor Waller, Jihad has both violent and non-violent meanings. It can simply mean striving to live a moral and virtuous life (Greater Jihad), spreading and defending Islam as well as fighting injustice and oppression (Lesser...

... All of the characters of the Doubt pose different worldviews and dilemmas which are based on their values, beliefs, character, environment and status. Sis. Aloysius – Her dilemma was the challenge she faced when going against those in authority within the Catholic Faith. She knew that going up against Father Flynn with such an accusation would not be easily accepted by those in authority and it would be dismissed or “swept under the rug” so to speak. During the 1960’s the Catholic Church and its leaders were held in such high esteem, Nuns were not allowed to question the acts or views of their superiors. Therefore, she felt so strongly that Father Flynn was guilty and was determined to have him removed for the protection of the children and the church/school by any means necessary. She choose to pursue what she felt was the right thing to do, even if it meant doing wrong in the process. Sis James – Her dilemma was choosing between standing for what she believed in her heart to be right or allowing her judgment to be clouded by Sis Aloysius views. James also believed in establishing a relationship with her students in order to better understand their needs. Her worldview was an innocent and naive view of people. She chose to stand for her own convictions. Father Flynn – Flynn was faced with the dilemma of standing up against the accusations against Sis Aloysius accusations against him or bowing out. He knew there was no concrete evidence that she had against him,...

...Divorce: Why have divorce rates increased since the 1950s? A divorce is the ending of a legal marriage, cancelling the marriage contract between the partners and the state. In the UK, a divorce requires the approval of the legal system, although this is fairly easy to come by. A typical divorce has to consider support payments for the partners and any children, child custody, the distribution of property and the division of debt. Fifty years ago there were few divorces. Nowadays, two in five marriages end in divorce. This is because divorce is cheaper and easier, and the equality between the sexes has been narrowed. In the 1950s, divorce used to be difficult to obtain and very few divorces took place. People were looked down on if they were divorced and it was impossible for them to remarry in church. Nowadays, divorce is accepted as a normal part of life, and no one is looked down on for being divorced. The number of divorces granted in the UK in 1961 was 27,000. This doubled to 56,000 by 1969, and doubled again to 125,000 divorces by 1972. The number in 2002 was 160,000. Between 1990 and 2003, The United Kingdom had the highest divorce rate at 6.68 annual per 1,000 people. However, the rate of divorce in the United Kingdom has been dropping in recent years, to 135,000 in 2008. The most important reason for increase in the amount of divorce is the removal of legal and financial barriers to divorce. In 1969 a new law was passed, the Divorce Reform Act, which made divorce cheaper...

...When one thinks of some of the greatest writers in the world, C. S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and others may come to mind. However, these literary greats did not ignore what other books were written before their works. Authors learn from what previous writers created before them, so that they may build on what foundation was lain. This is the case with George Macdonald, a lesser known but influential author. Macdonald pursued excellence through his early life, his adult life, and earned recognition for his literary accomplishments. George Macdonald’s early life was intriguing and important to shaping who he became. George Macdonald was born on December 10, 1824 in Huntly Aberdeen, Scotland. Perhaps, as a young child he had no clue as to what...

...talking about the Bible and God. Infinity means that God creates time and all who inhabits time out of infinity. The infinity image is there before the creation of the world. There is also three interlocking circles on the chart. They represent the three symbols of God; the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. The narrator covers the creation of earth. God created the Heavens and earth and all the living creatures found here. He then created humankind in his image. God put the man in charge of all the creatures. Man got to name all the animals and he was named Adam. Man wanted a companion so God created a partner for Adam and her name was Eve. God told Adam and Eve that they are not to eat the fruit on the tree of knowledge in the garden in Eden. A serpent, who is perceived as the devil, convinced Eve that the fruit will allow them to live forever and be as great as God. Adam and Eve ate from the tree and the world became cursed. Sin was created and plagued the earth. Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve. They made offerings to God and only Abel’s was acceptable so Cain was jealous and killed Abel. This was the start of a lot of violence and the idea of sin. God wanted to wash the Earth clean and start over. He wanted to rid the earth of sin so he decided to flood the earth. Noah was on God’s good side so he was told by God to create a boat big enough for his family and animals. They were in the boat for forty days and forty nights until God...

...heard. There is much skepticism when discussing such a sensitive issue like same sex marriage; however the fight is not over. As the support in legalizing same sex marriage continues to rise, many other Americans still wonder, “How same sex marriage will benefit America”? “Isn’t that against the bible?” “What about our children?” Similar questions such as these were likely asked when granting equal rights to slaves but together they accomplished what they rightfully deserved, national acceptance of who they were and the same rights as every other man and woman who reside in the United States. The Bible and Gay Marriage The bible is a living document which is considered to be The Word of the Lord, and is often cited for motivation, self improvement, and lessons learned. More importantly, the bible expresses about the power of love and family; neither explicitly defines marriage as between one man and one woman. Furthermore, many of the men mentioned in the bible had more than one wife. For example, Abraham, the great patriarch, who slept with his servant when he discovered his beloved wife Sarah, was infertile? Or to Jacob, who fathered children with four different women (two sisters and their servants)? "It is better to marry than to burn with passion," says the apostle Paul, who was...

...The medical ethics topic that I have researched is the issue of abortion. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy. In the UK, every year around 200,000 women abort unwanted pregnancy. Abortion was legalised in the UK in 1967 through the Abortion Act which allows women to have a free abortion on the NHS if signed off by two doctors. It is a highly controversial issue due to many people showing that it is highly necessary but others say that it’s too easy to have. It was legalised to avoid issues such as back street abortions from occurring as many women were killed or severely injured by them. There are three main methods which are used to abort a foetus; an early medical abortion which can be used up to twelve weeks of pregnancy, vacuum aspiration which is used between seven and fifteen weeks of pregnancy and surgical dilation and evacuation which is used from fifteen weeks of pregnancy. Central to the theological debate are the different views as to when life begins, whether abortion is murder or should it just be seen as another form of birth control? Roman Catholics believe that life begins at the point of conception and preserving life is a ‘primary precept’ whereas the Islamic view is that life begins at 120 days of gestation. These different viewpoints show that abortion is even controversial within different religions. Another clear point of controversy withinthe topic is whether abortion is classified as murder. Albert Schweitzer developed the idea of...

Actually they don’t worth it they the necessary is education, they have hunger of fact. They have thirst of copy, pencil and bag. The parents, especially in south Asia, pretend as children are the gift of god we need to lose it else almighty will never forgive us and the same parent send their son to wash dishes of other, which is blindly correct. No, that is not blindness; money has covered their eyes and mouth, along with all sense organ that forbid them to understand their child’s pain. Making them work is largest sane in the entire universe. Children who have no knowledge of this cruel world are easily misused. They are forced to do lower class job, sometimes prostitution, which adult demand much higher cost. Child they work days and night to feed their family. They have to screw their entire childhood for their parent’s happiness. Children have sharp eyesight which is always beneficial of art work. It is less expensive to them; they have to give less food to them, they can also make children work overtime without any extra money. They can be easily frightened if they are taking rest instead of working. For instance, in a company if owner is providing food and wedge for daily. He will be benefited if he employs children; in compare to adult they can feed two children, also give less salary to them. It is also a great problem of developing...

...A friend has a Japanese wall-hanging of a tiger striding forward, an embodiment of controlled strength. The concentrated stare of the eyes reminds me of the quaint Japanese figurines called 'daruma,' after the name of the supposed founder of Zen. These strangely conceived pieces of pottery represent the catalytic impact of Zen insight into the fundamental oneness of nature: the piercing look or glance is meant to penetrate into our being and shock us into an awareness that life is everywhere and inner wisdom immanent. Like the tiger awaiting its chance to spring, so is the 'true face' inside the mask of our daily personality ready to make itself known -- all it needs is the opportunity. We alone can give it that opening by letting go of our possessions: the accumulations of lifetimes of self-service and self-seeking. Blake's famous poem The Tyger, written about 1793, conveys the same impersonal fire and strength: Tyger, tyger, burning bright In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Could frame thy fearful symmetry? In what distant deeps or sides Burnt the fire of thine eyes? On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand dare seize the fire? We need to bear in mind that Blake entered into a stream of ancient wisdom-knowledge that had had to flow underground ever since the dogmas of the church councils were imposed upon European culture. He imparted his own patina of meaning to the visions and concepts he derived from his researches, and one of these was...
