...Riga Analysis Report For this euro-city analysis report, I’ve chosen Riga, Latvia. Riga has longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates of approximately 6.9° N, 24.1° E. Roughly 45 miles northeast of Jelgava, Riga is situated just off the southern shores of the Baltic Sea. Located between 1 to 10 meters above sea level, Riga is home to forests, sandy plains, lakes, and rivers. Most notably, the Daugava River runs through the city and empties off into the Gulf of Riga. Latvia is a democratic parliamentary republic with Riga being home to their Federal government as well as their local city government. Riga is the most populous city of the Baltic States, with an estimated population of 650,000 inhabitants. In the late 12th century, Riga became an ancient settlement for the Livs and Kurs. The Ridzene River flowing into the Daugava River created a natural harbor for sea-bound ships. This would begin to serve as a major trade route from the Viking age on forward. Albert of Buxhoevden arrived in 1199 with ships of Crusaders and established the Brothers of the Sword military order. The city of Riga, founded in 1201, was the seat of Albert’s bishopric and a base for conquering the lands of Livonia to the northeast, Courland to the west, and Semigallia to the south. The city joined the Hanseatic League in 1282 and became the dominant center of trade on the Baltic Sea’s eastern shore. The Old Town, the historic center of Riga, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The canal...

...the value chain in this service organization. At a high level, the value chain at UPS can be described as a series of package “sorts” that must occur between the time UPS receives the package from the sender, and the time it is delivered to its final destination. Generally speaking, technology has been engineered into most of these sort steps in an effort to improve productivity, package handling volume, and accuracy. However, several critical steps remain manual, labor intensive processes that are fraught with errors that require rework. Our group has focused on the final sorting step in the value chain, the “Pre-Load”. A worker performing the Pre-Load step must memorize up to 1,200 “knowledge units”, which consist of zip codes, cities, areas of town, or some combination of these. These knowledge units form the basis for a sorting decision that determines which package truck will carry the parcel to its’ final destination. Although this is a simple decision to make, the quantity of information required to accurately sort is substantial. This, coupled with the speed at which a sorter is expected to operate, has the potential for costly errors. Operating at this fast pace, an experienced worker can perform well. However, UPS typically employs students or other entry level workers in the pre-load...

...Ivan the Terrible was an erratic sovereign who ruled Russia in extreme oppression, whereas Peter the Great was a Tsar that serves a better purpose for Russia. Both of these Russian rulers were raised under traumatic conditions which contributes to their actions in the future such as killing many of their own people. As the Tsars of the Russian state, they enjoyed absolute power as an autocrat. Ivan the Terrible made a series of improvement in the country’s military and judiciary structures, continuing the legacy of his predecessors in expansionism. However his efforts on annexing Livonia to gain a port at the Baltic sea was unsuccessful. After the death of his wife Anastasia, he was grieve stricken and became paranoia. As a result of his...

...Urban Issues Urban Violence My topic of discussion for this paper is urban violence. An incident that occurred about a little over a month ago that really bothered me has caught my attention about how much crime goes on in my area so frequently. A 1-year-old boy name Antiq Hennis was shot in the left side of his head on Sunday, September 1, 2013, on a Brooklyn street in the Brownsville area and ended up being pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center where he was rushed shortly after the shooting. He was sitting in a stroller with his parents on the corner of Livonia Avenue and Bristol Street in the Marcus Garvey Village projects in Brownsville about 7pm that night. A witness name Gina Gamboa was in the Brownsville area when she heard the shooting and noticed that one man was running away from the scene and one man was just standing there and then left the scene. He then came back and noticed that the baby’s head was to the side and stroller was covered in blood. Police sources say that the bullets aimed to the 1-year-old boy was meant for his father, Anthony Hennis, and accidently hits the stroller and killed his son. Family members mentioned that Anthony, the little boy’s father has a record of more than 20 arrests and that they believe the shooting was payback from earlier when the father had a dispute with someone. Unfortunately, the gun man had bad aiming and killed the little boy. Bishop Willie Billips, a local anti-violence activist was...

...Daud Mansuar Mrs. Stevens CHY 4U May 30, 2014 The Legacy of Ivan the Terrible The legacy of Ivan Vasilyevich, Tsar of Russia from 1547 until his death in 1584 (Kort 31), is like a pineapple. In order to enjoy the goodness of the sweet fruit inside, one must laboriously get past the tough skin and sharp, stiff leaves. Much like a pineapple, determining the legacy of Ivan Vasilyevich has its drawbacks, as there was a fair share of inadequacies during his reign, but after one gets past this, one will discover that Ivan’s reign was indeed one that benefitted Russia for the short and long term. Ivan Vasilyevich was indeed an effective leader of Russia as his reign would lay the foundation for making Russia one of the most powerful nations the world has ever seen. His expansion of Russia, Renaissance pursuits, and effective domestic policies are all reasons why Ivan was an effective leader of Russia. Ivan’s territorial gains that included Siberia as well as Kazan and Astrakhan to the east (Kort 35) would benefit Russia from an economic, political, and social standpoint. First of all, he managed to annex a large Muslim population that lived in these areas (“Prominent Russians: Ivan IV the Terrible”) and turned Russia into a multi-ethnic and multi-religious state. The significance of this is enormous as this happened in the 1500’s, a time where Europeans, fresh off the Dark Ages, were generally intolerant to any religions other than Christianity. In fact, Ivan made the people...

The Arab American population has been growing rapidly as a result of immigration, high birth rate, and conversions, it was estimated that in 2010 that Arab American community will form % 0.50 of total population of the USA (Asi& Beaulieu, 2013).The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the Arab American population to be approximately 1.4 million. However, the Arab American Institute (AAI) notes that this estimate is low as a result of a lack of comprehensive tracking. The AAI estimates the actual population of Arab Americans to be 3.4 million (AAI, 2008).The median household income for Arab Americans is $56,331 which is higher than the median income for all U.S. households (AAI, 2008). ...Risk in Housing Markets: An Equilibrium Approach⇤ Aurel Hizmo† NYU Stern January 30, 2012 Abstract Homeowners are overexposed to city-specific house price risk and income risks, which may be very di cult to insure against using standard financial instruments. This paper develops a micro-founded equilibrium model that transparently shows how this local uninsurable risk a↵ects individual location decisions and portfolio choices, and ultimately how it a↵ects prices in equilibrium. I estimate a version of this model using house price and wage data and provide estimates for risk premia for di↵erent cities, which imply that homes are on average about $20000 cheaper than they would be if owners were risk-neutral. This estimate is over $100000 for volatile coastal cities. Next, I simulate the model to study the e↵ects of financial innovation on equilibrium outcomes. Creating assets that hedge city-specific risks increases house prices by about 20% and productivity by about 10%. The average willingness to pay for completing the market per homeowner is between $10000 and $20000. Welfare gains come both from better risk-sharing and from more e cient sorting of households across cities. ⇤ I am deeply grateful to Patrick Bayer, Andrew Patton, and Peter Arcidiacono for their encouragement and support. I also thank Robert McMillan, Tim Bollerslev, Vish Viswanathan, Chris Timmins, Jimmy Roberts and the seminar participants at Duke Finance, the ERID Conference at Duke, Fed Board, NYU Stern...

...The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (US), America, or simply the States, is a federal republic[10][11] consisting of 50 states, 16 territories, a federal district, and various overseas extraterritorial jurisdictions. The 48 contiguous states and the federal district of Washington, D.C. are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is the northwestern part of North America and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The country also has five populated and nine unpopulated territories in the Pacific and the Caribbean. At 3.79 million square miles (9.83 million km2) in total and with around 316 million people, the United States is the fourth-largest country by total area and third largest by population. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries.[12] The geography and climate of the United States is also extremely diverse, and it is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Paleo-indians migrated from Asia to what is now the US mainland around 15,000 years ago,[13] with European colonization beginning in the 16th century. The United States emerged from 13 British colonies located along the Atlantic seaboard. Disputes between Great Britain and these colonies led to the American Revolution. On July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies unanimously issued the Declaration of Independence. The ensuing war ended...

...Christianity Christianity (from the Ancient Greek word Χριστός, Christos, a translation of the Hebrew מָשִׁיחַ, Māšîăḥ, meaning "the anointed one",together with the Latin suffixes -ian and -itas) is an Abrahamic, monotheistic religion based on the life and oral teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as presented in the New Testament. Christianity is the world's largest religion, with approximately 2.2 billion adherents, known as Christians. Most Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, fully divine and fully human, and the saviour of humanity whose coming was prophesied in the Old Testament. Consequently, Christians refer to Jesus as Christ or the Messiah. The foundations of Christian theology are expressed in ecumenical creeds. These professions of faith state that Jesus suffered, died, was buried, and was resurrected from the dead in order to grant eternal life to those who believe in him and trust in him for the remission of their sins. The creeds further maintain that Jesus bodily ascended into heaven, where he reigns with God the Father. Most Christian denominations teach that Jesus will return to judge everybody, living and dead, and to grant eternal life to his followers. He is considered the model of a virtuous life. His ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection are often referred to as "the gospel", meaning "good news" (a loan translation of the Greek: εὐαγγέλιον euangélion). The term gospel also refers to written accounts of Jesus's life and teaching, four of which...
