The Black Lives Matter movement was created in 2012 after the murder of 17 year old, Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martin was murdered by George Zimmerman, who was acquitted for his crime. Black Lives Matter is being used rebuild the black liberation movement. It is used to show how black people are left powerless in the hands of the government and deprived of basic human rights. From Mike Brown (18) to Yvette Smith (45), over 250 black people were killed by police officers in 2015. Nearly one in three black people are murdered, beaten or violated by police officers, who are sworn to “serve and protect” them. After arriving at Fruitvale Station, officers Tony Pirone and Marysol Domenici gathered Oscar and four of his friends off of the train. Passengers started to record after noticing officer Pirone being very abrasive and using excess force towards the men. Oscar was said to be cooperating in his final moments, begging the officers not to shoot. On January 7, 2009, 500 people gathered and began to peacefully protest at Fruitvale Bart Station in memory of Oscar Grant. The movie, Fruitvale Station, directed by Ryan Coogler, was released, showing the last 24 hours of Oscar Grant’s life. On the afternoon of July 19, 2014, civil rights activist, Al Sharpton organized a protest on Staten Island, condemning the police’s actions against Eric Garner. On December 3, citizens in New York and San Francisco gathered in protest making speeches and rallies against the indictment. Protests have also occurred in Boston, Chicago, Baltimore, Atlanta and even London. By December 28, over 50 protests occurred globally in support of Eric Garner as well as many others. Over 2 million people have used the hashtags Sandra Bland, Say Their Names, and Black Lives Matter to shed light and stand up for police
