...Justino Gonzalez ELA 11 Unit 6 Assignment 4 My Connection with the Novel Claudette Colvin Twice Toward Justice by Phillip Hoose The novel Claudette Colvin Twice Toward Justice, written by Phillip Hoose, is the story of fifteen year old Claudette Colvin, who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus even though she was seated in the “colored” section. She was arrested, given a fine, and released on probation to her parents. As she was being arrested, she yelled that it was her constitutional right to keep her seat on the bus. She made her stand months before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a different Montgomery bus which led to the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott. Claudette bravely faced a trial which ignited a passion and protest for desegregation. The novel was very interesting and relatable to me. I feel a connection to this brave young lady’s struggles to overcome the vast racial differences and segregation policies that have a stranglehold on her entire city, because I support her decision of not giving up her bus seat, I disagree with racism and discrimination as she does, and most importantly I feel her pain of sometimes not being treated equally being part of a minority myself.
