...What is Leadership? Leadership is a process of getting things done through people. Leaders are getting things done by working through people. Leadership has been described as the "process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. (Chemers, M. M. (2002). Meta-cognitive, social, and emotional intelligence of transformational leadership: Efficacy and Effectiveness. In R. E. Riggio, S. E. Murphy, F. J. Pirozzolo (Eds.), Multiple Intelligences and Leadership.)1 In today’s world, definition of leadership is changing. A leadership guru, Barry Posner, makes the following observations about the needed change in how business leadership is viewed: In the past business believed a leader was like the captain of a ship: cool, calm, collected. Now, we see that leaders need to be human. They need to be in touch, they need to be empathetic, and they need to be with people. Leaders need to be a part of what’s going on, not apart from what’s going on.1 Leadership Behaviors Noted leadership researchers House and Podsakoff have summarized the behaviors and approaches of great leaders that they drew from modern theories (e.g., charismatic and transformational) and basic research findings as follows1: Vision; Great leaders articulate and ideological vision that is congruent with the deeply held values of followers, a vision that describes a better future to which the followers have a moral right. Passion and self-sacrifice;...

...Coach Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K.) and Coach Robert Knight (Coach Knight) were two of the most winning and successful coaches to ever coach basketball. These men are not just known for their record wins, but for their unique leadership. They each had a unique way of leading their teams. Coach Knight was Indiana University’s head basketball coach and became a legend there. Coach K. was the head coach at Duke University since 1980. A fact of interest, both of these two men knew each other in an earlier time. Coach Knight had been Mike Krzyzewski’s basketball coach when he played for the United States Military Academy at West Point. It was there they began to build a relationship of trust and respect that would follow and remain with them throughout both of their careers and beyond, as they were also friends. Each of these men have differing ways in which they lead their teams, but there are leadership styles which they shared when it came to coaching. When taking the model which Robert Katz developed we can see there are skills that did account for their success. Coach Knight held two of the leadership traits that were professed by Katz. Those were technical skills and conceptual skills. He had the ability to know exactly was needed and how to make changes based on each individual situation. According to Katz’s model, Coach Knight did not have human skills. He was known for his roughness (e.g; using high levels of profanity and throwing objects onto the court). He did not have human...

...Josh A Don Bailey English 12 19 October 2015 Basketball Coaching There are many kinds of basketball coaches, there are good ones and there are bad ones. The way that the team you are coaching plays all determines which one the coach turns out to be. A basketball team is either a well-oiled machine or they are dysfunctional. It is all up to the coach and how they teach them to determine if the team will be a good one or not. A basketball coach has many jobs that they do while coaching the team. They have to make drills, order uniforms, make sure everyone has rides to and from games, make sure that the team works well together, and make sure the team has enough players. The coach also has to make sure that they plays are executed right and that every team member knows what position they play and how to play that position properly. The coach is constantly doing everything they can for the team, the coach devotes their life to the team that is being coached. There are three main topics of focus for this paper, they are; sports related injuries, how to properly motivate the team and better them as a team and individuals, and bullying in the sport. First, there are a lot of sports related injuries that occur when playing basketball. The most common is an ankle injury, it can be injured in the muscles, the tendons, or the joints. “Muscle strength and balance around the lower limb joints may play an important role for performance and injury prevention in basketball” (Gerodimos...

...are very important because they generate the revenue, through ticket sales and television contracts, that support the other sports Big State competes in. In addition, when the football and basketball teams are successful, applications and enrollments to Big State tend to increase, as do alumni donations. It is no exaggeration to say that after the university president, the athletic director, football coach, and men’s basketball coach are the three most important employees at Big State. Recently you have been hearing some disturbing rumors about the football team and its coach though, and you aren’t sure what to do. Football coaches are known for being tough on their players—yelling and swearing are commonplace and generally condoned as motivational tactics. What coach Steve Jones is accused of is another story though. One of the assistant coaches, who was recently fired, secretly took a video with his cell phone that shows the coach throwing footballs at the players’ heads, sometimes from behind, when they make mistakes or appear not to be listening. The audio is equally disturbing. In addition to the usual cursing, the coach can be heard using sexist and anti-gay slurs. This is especially troubling since because of a...

...& 2012-2013 INTRODUCTION The primary purpose of this handbook is to acquaint you with the rules and expectations of the softball program. You are responsible to read and understand the contents in this handbook. In the event that there is something in the handbook you do not understand, please bring it to my attention as soon as possible. Our policies have been placed in this booklet so you will understand from the outset what is expected our players. This handbook was not made to disrupt the lines of communication between the coaches and the parents, but to encourage it. Participating in Softball is a privilege and not a right; we hold higher standards for girls who participate in softball than we would for those students who choose not to participate. The main goal for the Softball Program is to establish discipline for the girls. Without discipline we cannot achieve our goals that we have set for the team. Discipline is defined as “Training which corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character, behavior which results from such training; obedience to authority or rules; punishment meant to correct poor behavior”. The second goal of the Softball Program is to teach the girls how to work as a team to accomplish the teams and each individual player’s goals for the season. Remember, “ It ’s not the name that is on the back of the uniform i t ’s the nam e on t he front that counts ” . EXPECTATIONS 1. Players are expected to represent the community, school...

...Bess 1 Bess 1 Interview Material The vocation I would one-day love to have is to be a “big time” women’s college basketball coach. Even if I do not become “big time,” and I am just a regular coach that is also fine with me, because Proverbs 22:1 says, “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Ron Greene was the first guest speaker that we had the opportunity to hear speak in class. He is a very well known and accomplished non-profit executive with an extensive record in helping children grow into what they aspire to be. He provides leadership, management and direction to boys and girls club organizations in completing its tasks of developing children into positive, productive, open-minded, and responsible adult citizens. Ron Greene’s overall goal if nothing else is to impact lives of people positively and that is also the goal I have set forth for myself in pursuing this career. As long as I am able to impact lives positively through my coaching, that will make it all worthwhile. I interviewed Morris Brandon who is my former AAU coach, who is now an assistant coach at Virginia Union University. He has coached many basketball teams, on all different levels, starting from Boys and Girls Clubs all the way up to the college level. He enjoys this job to the fullest because it allows him to impact lives positively, and he also gets to be around the game that he loves....

...2 Chapter VI Program Development Working hard, being passionate, and developing skilled players are the cornerstones of building a solid program. It is important for coaches to have good relationships with the other members of the faculty at the school. All teachers want to be treated with respect. They would expect the other members of the faculty to support the athletic team, just as they will support their full-time teacher duties. Concerning a coach's own coaching staff, there must be great cooperation between all of the members of the staff. Expectations for athletes, physically, emotionally, academically and socially Everything we do is for a reason and a purpose. Consequently, our workouts are very intense, relatively brief and never more than four times per week. With the goal in mind that players reach their potential for size and strength by the time they graduate. We are not a weightlifting team, nor are we marathon runners. Too much emphasis in one area of training will leave the athlete deficient in other areas. Overall fitness, specific to the needs of the game is our priority. There are several elements that make up my team level of fitness. They are muscular strength, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, sports nutrition, skill acquisition, speed development and rest and recovery. Athletic competition for my players should be fun and should be a significant part of a sound educational program, embodying high standards of ethics and sportsmanship...

...Coach K Paper Coach K Final Exam May 1, 2012 Coach Mike Krzyzewski was a phenomenal coach and leader. He had the most career wins in NCAA Division I history. His is a prime example of exceptional leadership. Throughout the book Leading with the Heart I have seen prime examples of the following leadership theories: transformational leadership, trait theory, behavioral theory, and power and influence theory. Coach Mike Krzyzewski is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He played point guard for the Cadet team. He retired from active duty in 1974 and started his coaching career. Coach K took over Duke during the 1980-81 season. He lead the Blue Devils to the NIT quarterfinals in his first year. Under his leadership the Blue Devils won their first national championship in 1991. They also won in 1992. He also led the team to another national title in 2001 and then again in 2010. Coach K is the definition of a leader. He has everything it takes to be a successful leader and he has proven that time and time again. He is more than just a leader and leading people to win games. He wants his team to get the best experiences possible. He believes in treating people fairly and what you put in to it you get out. Transformational leadership is the leadership style Coach K participated in. Transformational leadership is where the leader constantly inspires their team with shared ideas of the future. The leader’s enthusiasm is usually passed on to the team...

...Tugas Personal ke-2 Minggu 3 Happiness Coaches for Employees We know there is considerable spillover from personal unhappiness to negative emotions at work. Moreover, those who experience negative emotions in life and at work are more likely to engage in counterproductive behavior with customers, clients, or felloe employees. Increasingly, organizations such as American Express, UBS, KPMG are turning to happiness coaches to address this spillover from personal unhappiness to work emotions and behaviors. Srikumar Rao is a former college professor who has the nickname, “the happiness guru”. Rao teaches people to analyze negative emotions to prevent them from becoming overwhelming. If your job is restructured, for example, Rao suggest avoiding negative thoughts and feelings about it. Instead, he advises, tell yourself it could turn out well in the long run, and there is no way to know at present. Beyond reframing the emotional impact of work situations, some happiness coaches attack the negative emotional spillover from life to work (and from work to life). A working mother found that a happiness talk by Shawn Actor helped her stop focusing on her stressed-out life and instead look for chances to smile. Laugh, and be grateful. In some cases, the claims made by happiness coaches seem a bit trite. Jim Smith, who labels himself “The Executive Happiness Coach”, asks: “What if I told you that there are secrets nobody told you as a kid – or as an adult...

...Running Head: Case Study Analysis Paper 2: A Tale of Two Coaches Case Study Analysis Paper 2: A Tale of Two Coaches Harry A. Gkornean Grand Canyon University: LRD 600-0500: Leadership Styles and Development Dr. Terri Trent September 2, 2015 “Coach K: A Matter of the Heart” & "Coach Knight: A Will to Win” Overview This paper provides a leadership styles and skills analysis of two cases that separately discussed the professional careers of two leaders involved in similar kinds of activities. It presents two coaches – Coach K and Coach Knight - as achievers but distinguishes them in terms of the methodology used. This paper recognizes similar leadership attributes of these two leaders and distinguishes one from another in terms of their leadership style. It identifies Coach K more as a leader than Coach Knight whose attributes were more managerial. Leadership Skills Coach K was an efficient and successful leader who demonstrated excellent leadership skills as he led the Duke Basketball Team to becoming one of the most successful college basketball teams in America’s history (DeLacey, Perlow & Snook, 2005). His success can be attributed to the following leadership skills: competencies, individual attributes, and leadership outcomes, technical, human and conceptual skills. Similarly, Coach Knight was a very successful basketball coach at Indiana University and Texas Tech. According to DeLacey, Perlow & Snook (2005), he earned for himself one of the most enviable...

...Case Study Analysis Paper 3: A Tale of Two Coaches 1) Through your review of Fiedler's contingency model, would you say that the coaches are matched to their situation? Why or why not? Has this had an impact on their effectiveness? I believe that Coach Knight and Coach K are matched to their situation according to Fiedler’s Contingency Model. Contingency theory suggests that situations can be characterized in terms of three factors: leader–member relations, task structure, and position power (Northouse, 2010). 2) Using Situational Leadership II, provide evidence from the cases that show whether or not there is usage of the leadership styles by the two coaches, and adopt a position on whether or not you think the coaches are effective from this theoretical perspective. In: Business and Management Coach Analysis Case Analysis Paper 3: A Tale of Two Coaches Bonnie Hyatt Grand Canyon University Leadership Style and Development LDR-600 Kelly Jensen, MBA April 30, 2013 Case Analysis Paper 3: A Tale of Two Coaches Fiedler’s contingency theory is a “leader-match theory” (Northhouse, 2013, p. 135). It attempts to match the style of the leader with the situation and develop a match between the two. Coach Knight and Coach Krzyzewski (Coach K) were both effective in this leadership style because they produced winning teams. Coach Knight is a task driven leader who sores low on the least preferred co-worker scale (LPC). His primary focus was accomplishing the tasks...
