In the beginning, the competition yielded benefits for both firms. They were constantly trying to keep up with the other, which proved to be a mutually beneficial relationship. However, following the end of the millennium, US CSD consumption began to decline. By 2009, Americans were consuming CSDs at the lowest rates since 1989. During this decline, Coca-Cola struggled operationally and Pepsi attempted forays into new products and new markets. Forging ahead into the 21st century, both Coca-Cola and Pepsi faced the problems of sustaining growth and profitability in a declining CSD market and the challenges associated with non-CSD products.
