...Thomas Huffstutler Pd. 2 More Than A Feeling I have seldomly studied a topic that has informed me of myself or has connected with me easier than Swedish. My heritage is more than just something about me. It is part of who I am. It is this part of me that yearns to know more about my roots and where my ancestors came from. This fascination is what drove me to learn Swedish and to become involved in the strong Swedish community in Minnesota. I first realized that being Swedish was an integral part of who I was was the first time I met my family from Sweden. I was 4 years old when they first came over. I was captivated by the language and their sense of “coolness” that they carried with them. They came bearing many gifts and cool things from this odd far away land. They brought lots of chocolate of course and some other cool things, but what I remember the most is what my cousin gave me. He brought me a orrefor polar bear. I looked at it with a sense of “aw”, imagining the journey that this bear had gone through. I still have that bear and it serves as a reminder of my family on the other side of the globe. Since then, they have visited many times and my fascination with the language and the culture has only been amplified. I began to take language lessons at the American Swedish Institute to try to immerse myself in Swedish in an attempt to gain the “coolness” of my cousins. I also started to get my hands on anything Swedish that I could. I got Swedish books, movies and...

...launching the mobile “Lunch Partner” application; a tool to help people connect with others by affording them the opportunity to meet other people like themselves during their lunch break. With our application, we offer people the gift of never having to suffer through a lonely lunch ever again, if they so wish. As students, we don’t have any fixed break times for us to have our lunch, as most students take different courses and subjects. This means that no matter how much you try to synchronise your schedule to that of your friends, you will inevitably come upon a time where you will have no available friends to share your lunch or breaks with. This scenario was the backbone of our motivation to create the Lunch Partner application. With our app, we help our customers in a few key ways. The first and most obvious service we provide will be in helping those people who are alone find a lunch partner to accompany them. However in addition to this basic function, we also help our patrons by providing information about restaurants in the area, and customers that have become premium members of our service by purchasing the full version will also get to enjoy added privileges such as promotions and...

...highly price-sensitive consumers (Aviram, 2010)between the ages of 18-49, who have at least some college education and make $50,000 or more annually [see Appendix A]. The Problems The nature of the smartphone industry carries with it the continuous problems of short product lifecycles, rapid technological advancements, a decreasing new user market base, a large presence of imitations and substitutions, and numerous barriers of entry – such as stiff competition and strong brand loyalty. These problems require companies to be constantly and consistently ahead of current trends and consumer demands in order to produce the “latest” products in a timely manner. The Objectives In order to combat the problem of rapid technological changes, companies need to focus their attention on innovation, research and development, and become so attuned to consumer characteristics and values that they can predict their wants and needs ahead of the consumer. When addressing the issue of the declining new user market base, companies can produce smartphones geared toward the demographics of those who aren’t in the current market (those who are 65+; those with a high school diploma or less; and those who make under $50,000 annually). In regards to a larger presence of imitations and substitutions, firms need to develop ways to make switching costs higher. Just as Apple has effectively done by creating an app store, operating system, and software programs that can only be used by Apple products. Thus, the...

A single company, known for its obsession over details, produces both the hardware and the software. The result is a single, coherently designed whole. Second, superior components. As the world’s largest tech company, Apple can call the shots with its part suppliers. It can often incorporate new technologies — scratch-resistant Gorilla glass, say, or the supersharp Retina screen — before its rivals can. Third, compatibility. The iPhone’s ubiquity has led to a universe of accessories that fit it. Walk into a hotel room, and there’s probably an iPhone connector built into the alarm clock. The iPad a new generation of tablet computers that are set to replace laptops, books, and revolutionize the technological industry. It was released on April 2010, and sold more than 3 million units in 80 days. The great amount generated from the sales, isn’t a surprise to many, as Apple had a clear strategy, which was already in operation years before the launch of the product. Apple had announced years ago regarding the release of the iPad, in order to stir up hype and increase the demand of the product, which they did with great success. Apple however, never enclosed any information about the price range the product was going to be in and speculations about the price of the increased in the market. Due to the very high specifications of the product and the features it was meant to include, it was estimated at $900 plus. Since Apple sold a vast amount of units on the first day of the launch, the price elasticity of the product is worth thinking about. Apple had released iPad’s that were ranged way below the estimated speculated market price, and consumers were flocking infront of stores...
