...Communication: A Verbal Path to Effective Leadership A large part of being an effective leader is communication. Whether in a public speaking environment, a one-on-one conversation with a team member or while delegating workloads, it is critical that all aspects of a leader’s communication be on point. There are several communication strategies that a leader should employ that will help him/her be a strong, respected leader and in turn appreciated - maybe even loved by his/her team. This type of leadership will lead to a cooperative, collaborative and most importantly, a successful work environment. When communication from a leader is broken, much like the game “telephone”, the entire team’s communication becomes broken. Signals are crossed and the wrong messages are sent. The eventual effect on the team, and overall organization, can easily and quickly become negative and even unhappy. While many organizations have embraced the need for good communication strategies, and believe in the difference it makes, implementing those strategies can be a challenge. The following essay discusses two main issues about communication and leadership: Effective Leadership Communication Strategies in today’s workplace and the Barriers That Effective Leaders Must Avoid in order to lead effectively and build a productive work environment in spite of the many changes occurring in today’s world. Effective Leadership Communication Strategies There are some very key communication strategies that...

...Leadership and Communication Thomas Friedman writes in The World is Flat, “In the flat world, more and more business will be done through collaboration within and between companies, for a very simple reason: the next layers of value creation – whether in technology, marketing, biomedicine, or manufacturing – are becoming so complex that no single firm or department is going to be able to master them alone” (Birchfield, 2008). This quote can initiate one simple theory, that leaders are unable to be successful without the support of their employees and/or supporters. Nonetheless, they can only collaborate in an operational direction by having an unrestrained form of communication. It is imperative that all forms of leadership seek and fulfill communication strategies to create happy employees or supporters. Additionally, while seeking effective communication strategies, leaders must learn how to overcome the barriers that can diminish communication. These almost create a sort of cause and effect feeling with one another. Above all, leaders cannot expect to create a successful business or entity by only leading themselves; a leader must consistently seek self-growth all the while encouraging empowerment and growth among them. Communication Strategies To begin, good communication is a “bridge to worker loyalty” (Mayfield, 2002). Creating worker loyalty produces motivation, dedication, better performances, and a strong support team that will stand behind a leader. Predominantly...

...Beyond Spray and Pray Clampitt, DeKoch, and Cushman argue that the spray and pray strategy (which characterizes the federal agency example) and the withhold and uphold strategy are least likely to be effective in achieving organizational performance, whereas the underscore and explore strategy “maximizes organizational potential by creatively synthesizing executives' initiatives and employee concerns”. They suggest that, on occasion, more than one strategy can be used concurrently. For example, in one organization, the spray and pray strategy, also known as the “communication clutter” strategy, was used generally in “bombarding” staff with information on organizational performance; however, when it was faced with organizational changes such as downsizing and operational changes, a “withhold and uphold” strategy was adopted specifically on these issues. Executive adopted this latter strategy to reduce exposing employees to promises about the future that they were not able to deliver. The effect of this dual approach was not well received by staff: “Providing all the information employees could possibly want while avoiding the issues they cared about most bred discontent and mistrust”. Contingency Approaches to Communication Strategies Your Communicating Strategy Depends on The Type of Change Stace and Dunphy adopt a contingency view, pointing out that the communication strategy needs to be appropriate to the particular type of organizational change: Developmental or incremental...

...enumerated by Grossman and Valiga (2009) are the well-known great man theory, trait theory, situational theory, and the contemporary theory. The great man theory has the notion that leaders are born and not made, whereas the trait theory categorizes leaders as that of certain qualities that correlate with leadership skills. The situational theory, on the other hand, gives significance to the particular situation for a leader to be effective. Contemporary type of leadership seems to be the practice of modern kinds of leaders. The contemporary theory of leadership combines the leaders, his/her followers, and the situation at hand for leadership to be effective. Our group all agree that the Kaiser Permanente Ambulatory setting practices both the contemporary and trait theories of leadership. We have seen leaders and managers appointed to their positions based on their attribute from people they know and some appointed based on support from their team members. The nurse leaders especially are selected based on how involved they are with their teams, how they manage conflicts and their performance on fiscal responsibility. The nurse leaders are recognized as followers of the mission and vision of the organization, that is, providing quality and affordable care for members and the vision for the organization as a leader in healthcare in the country. ...Communication and Leadership in the Workplace Effective leadership has many different communication strategies but there are also several barriers to effective communication that an effective leader should overcome. I have had the opportunity to witness leadership and effective communication at my job that have impacted me in both a positive and negative way. Effective leadership is a vital part of an organizations lifeline and leaders should constantly find new ways to overcome any barriers that the may face in their day to day interactions with employees. Effective Leadership There are several communication strategies that are associated with effective leadership. A leader needs to be direct and to the point whenever they are relaying their message to employees. An organization should do everything that they can to assist their leader. Organizations should provide managers at all levels with accurate information aligned with organizational values and goals, offer necessary training to equip them with effective transformational leadership skills, and develop their leadership communication skills (Men, 2014). Effective communication should not stop with just the CEO or President. All levels of management must be responsible for relaying important and accurate information throughout the whole organization. Effective communication should pulse in all directions through an organization like a heartbeat (Facey, n.d.). Leaders should attempt to use face to face communication whenever...

...to improve communication processes within nurses. Within a year, the goal will be to improve the bedside handoff report with nurses by implementing a standard of nurse handoff by 10%. This will be done by the implementation of bedside report. This paper will discuss a strategy for communication, including management strategies, personal leadership development, managerial decision-making, business function, and leadership strategies. Management Strategies In order to reach this goal, a team will be first built to take on the challenge presented. To improve planning, a team will need to be formed, such as a guiding team to be able to create support around the plan (Kotter, & Cohen, 2012). The team will be able to research what is best for the company, while following the legislative processes as well. This team will be responsible for addressing the plan and forming it to how the company would approve of it. This will build on learning and growth goals, to develop education plans on increasing communication within nurses. To develop customer service and meet financial goals, the management by objectives method will be used. First, the guiding team will set goals to implement bedside report in each unit (Daft, 2014). ...this potential in others. It is not a solitary pursuit but one that harnesses the energy of those around you” (Owen, 2002). Managing the organizational changes and improvements is considered to be one of the most complex tasks of leadership. Evolution of new ways of communication, organization tasks, and management of people has become an ongoing process of strategies and planning. As the organizational dynamics of a business change with the conditions of the marketplace, so do the lives of the leaders and the managers that run them. As leaders eagerly strive to develop new organizational structures with a shared vision of emphasis it focuses on the company’s objectives and mission. The more idealized or utopian the goal advocated by the leader, the more discrepant it is relevant to the status quo. And, the greater, the discrepancy of the goal from the status quo, the more likely followers will attribute extraordinary vision to the leader. By presenting an idealized goal to the followers, a leader provides a challenge and a motivating force for change. (Conger & Kanungo, 1987). Effective managers of change understand that unless people are changed, change will not happen. The more people trust the leader, the more willing they are to accept the changes that are set in place. The attainable objectives and mission must be inspiring to all who are a part of the organization. Through effective leadership, corporate culture, change management, and organizational behavior...

...Diversity & Avoiding Conflicts PM/582 May 17, 2014 Professor Carol Locker Diversity & Avoiding Conflicts In mot organizations, conflicts arises because of jealousy, egos, lack of communication, promotion and falsely spread rumors. According to Manktelow (2014), conflict arises from differences between people; the same differences that often make diverse teams more effective than those made up of people with similar experience. When people with varying viewpoints, experiences, skills, and opinions are tasked with a project or challenge, the combined effort can far surpass what any group of similar individual could achieve. Team members must be open to these differences and not let them rise into full-blown disputes. Understanding and appreciating individuals viewpoints involved in conflict are key factors in its resolution. These are key skills for all team members to develop. The important thing is to maintain a healthy balance of constructive difference of opinion, and avoid negative conflict that's destructive and disruptive (Manktelow, 2014). The remainder of this paper will discuss the issues arising with Riordan Manufacturing “Going Green” and how the project manager addresses and mitigate conflicts. Also, discussing different strategies a project leader can use to promote success while leading team members Address & Mitigate Conflicts For the past few months, Riordan Manufacturing has been working a project where the company will be “Going...

The purpose of this paper is to identify the various strategies that make up the teams, the challenges which may occur, and the measures which will be taken to ensure the team is operating successfully. Various Strategies There are various strategies when forming a successful team. As role of Superintendent, I will use the five strategies of effective team building to assist in building the team of individuals to design the CardiCare Valve heart valves for Riordan Manufacturing. Clear expectations “begin by analyzing the team’s mission, developing goals to achieve that mission and creating strategies for achieving the goals” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 327). The first strategy is to choose leaders within each team who will ensure the team know what their role is and then distribute the work evenly among the team members. Historically teams cannot function properly without agreeing to these terms (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 319). A proficient leader will utilize the skills of the people within the team and assign them to the correct job function accordingly. The next strategy is to allocate the roles each member of the team will play based on their ability and experiences, taking into account that...

Permanent link to this document: http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/17515630910956589 Statement of the problem: Successful Implementation of strategy. Summary of Article: Leaders tend to think that once you designed a strategy it can be performed and succeeded. A strategy should be implemented to make it worth. Thinking differently and doing things differently to get different outcome. When crafting strategy is complete, leaders think that things are now simpler. It is the role of the leader to design strategy and assist in implementation, rather than to delegate it. Many leaders undermine the implementation which will affects negatively on the strategy due to poor execution. When a new strategy is made, people respond in four different ways, which are indifference, resistance, disbelief and support. Three groups concerning responds to new strategy were made; 20 % of the first respondents being saboteurs (resister of new change), 60% Groupies (fence sitters) and lastly Mavericks (those who welcome change). Leaders come up with very good strategies but they may be implemented wrongly, hence they will not be successful. When the strategies are launched, there is no motivation drive to those who are supposed to implement the strategies. At times there is no clear communication to the subordinates who are who should perform the execution of strategy. Effective communication should fill the gap...
