John Winthrop’s sermon and Mary Rowlandson’s captivity narrative share many similarities, as well as differences, between their purpose, form, tone and tools that they use. The purpose of these two pieces are to inform. Rowlandson informs us of the difficulties she had to face and explains her story of being captured by the natives. Winthrop informs but also persuades his audience to follow the path that God has chosen for them and warns them that if they do not fulfill what God has planned, they will be punished.
