Gender injustices and inequalities are shown in the following texts, Petronius's the “Window of Ephesus”, Chopin's “The story of an Hour, and Hemingway's “Hills like White Elephants”. Ramifications of fidelity, freedom, and ma will show how the women portray themselves in the texts. Gender is a very important topic relating to the texts because it focuses on the women that are being represented in a wrong way. Women are underestimated in the texts. Especially during that period in history. But in this case, the author Pretonius is trying to tell us about the unfaithful woman who had was being impetuous and had a hasty marriage with the solider. As she starts to stay with her husband she nearly dies from starvation. But her maid is there by her side to bring her some food. She has to lie to get her to eat but still doesn’t eat. She asked the lady, “if you faint from hunger? Why should you bury yourself alive, and go down to death before the fates have called you? What does Vergil say? ”(Petronius,45). But she did not eat until the fifth day of continuous hunger strike, until the soldier offers her, she was starting to get really weak from fasting. It was when the solider saw “noticed a light blazing among the tombs and heard the sounds of groaning”(Petronious,45). At first when he approached her she began to beat her breast and root out her hair. This was a custom women had done at that time to show grief and remorse. He argued with her to eat and “overcome by the smell of wine” she finally ate the bread and drank the wine. The fasting displayed loyalty at first because her husband was the reason she was fasting. But soon everything turns into infidelity because as soon as she is full, she is tempted to get married again with the solider. This happens only a few days after the death of
