...Access to computers has increased significantly over recent decades, and the number of children playing games on computers has increased too. This essay will consider the positive and negative impacts of this and discuss ways to mitigate against the potential negative effects. With regards to the positive effects, playing computers games can develop children’s cognitive skills. Many popular games require abstract and high level thinking skills in order to win, skills that may not be taught at school. For example, children need to follow instructions, solve complex problems and use logic in many of the games that are currently popular. Such experience will be beneficial to a child’s progression into an adult. However, concerns have been raised about the prolific use of computer games by children, much of this related to the violence they contain. The problem is that in many of the games children are rewarded for being more violent, and this violence is repeated again and again. For instance, many games involve children helping their character to kill, kick, stab and shoot. This may lead to increased aggressive feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. In order to minimize these negative impacts, parents need to take certain steps. Firstly, some video games are rated according their content, so parents must check this and ensure their children are not allowed to have access to games that are unsuitable. Parents can also set limits on the length of time games are played. Finally...

...introduction Computers have a profound effect on all aspects of language learning and teaching and can be used in developing writing skills. In this unit we discuss the use of computer to develop writing skills. The unit consists of three sections, and in each section there are three sub-sections. The first section deals with the basics/ fundamentals of a computer such as main components, multimedia devices (hardware) and Internet, web-resources (software). In the second section you have to deal with word processor and its various uses for developing writing skills such as composing,/drafting, writing, revising, editing, spelling check. The third unit deals with email communication and how it helps in developing communicative skills especially writing skills. Since this unit is mostly practical oriented, it will be useful if you have access to a computer with word processor. Writing is one of the important skills that is often neglected by students. Developing this skill is a big challenge to the teachers as Tangermpoon (2008:1) said, “it requires writers to have a great deal of lexical and syntactic knowledge as well as principle of organization in L2 to produce good writing.” To be successful in ones career, every student should work on improving writing skills. This paper discusses the development of writing skills through CALL with reference to Study Skills Success (SSS) software. background of the studies The 21st century has seen drastic changes where multimedia...

...1080/15305058.2012.690012 Writing Essays on a Laptop or a Desktop Computer: Does It Matter? Guangming Ling and Brent Bridgeman Educational Testing Service To explore the potential effect of computer type on the Test of English as a Foreign Language–Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) Writing Test, a sample of 444 international students was used. The students were randomly assigned to either a laptop or a desktop computer to write two TOEFL iBT practice essays in a simulated testing environment, followed by a survey of computer experience. The survey results suggested that the participants had extensive experience using computers, had more experience with laptops than with desktops, and preferred using the laptop computers to the desktop computers. The computer type (laptop or desktop computer) was found to have a negligible effect on essay performance (essay score, essay length, and writing speed). However, other factors, including gender, regional background, daily experience with laptop or desktop computers, preference for a particular pointing device, and previous TOEFL experience, were found to be significantly related to essay performance but did not interact with computer type. Keywords: computer type effects, desktop, e-rater, essay length, essay score, laptop, writing speed INTRODUCTION When large-scale computer-based testing began in the early 1990s, testing centers were equipped with standard desktop computers. At the time, this was the computer type most familiar to students...

... Course: Date: Taught more than thirty decades ago, cursive writing has a famed and legendary past. It was once a vital element of American education but is now becoming an archaic artefact as technology advancement and the requirement of more regulated tests push it out of the education system. Cursive writing should be scrapped out of the education system for there is no need of wasting time and resources to continue teaching a skill that won’t be beneficial to the students in the near future. For many students in America, cursive writing is as foreign as the hieroglyphics of the ancient Egypt. In most colleges and universities, more students are increasingly using tablet computers and laptops to take notes rather than the old adage of using pen and paper. With the changes in technology, handwritten letters are rare to come by. Most people have changed with the dynamics of technology. Most communication is done using email, Skype and Facebook as opposed to manual letter writing. Just like calligraphy, cursive is unnecessary. Writing is seen as a means of communicating. Technically talking, we are past the times of physical writing as an art. Whatever can be created by a pen, a computer can recreate it much better. Welcome to the world of technology. If it can be printed then it can be communicated in the penned form. The argument that cursive writing aids in refining the motor skills of students is completely untrue. There is no much...

...student majoring in computer science. I am in my junior year of my study but am expected to graduate by the end of 2017. I have not enrolled in any business classes at the moment but this is an aspect am considering to engage in so that I could increase chances to get a management position within the information technology sector. As a computer scientist, my professional objective involves contributing to the development of software and hardware that could reduce security risks. However in order to achieve this long-term professional objective of my career, I look forward upon the completion of my studies with admirable grades. My long –term professional objective of creating security within the information technology sector coincides with my goal for this writing course. In development of computer programs, there is a lot of creativity that is required just like what is highlighted in most writing courses. Personal writing experience in comparison to the process approach I have handled writing in my previous experiences. This has involved writing of term papers and assignments. In this form of writing, I noticed that what is required is objectivity. In such forms of writing, one is supposed to concentrate on facts that exist in theories and concepts. Unless it is asked by the tutor, writers of such papers are supposed to be objective. I found that this form of writing to be so rigid because one is not supposed to give his personal views. Considering that computer science is based...

... processing and output of data. We will also discuss the role of various computer components, the definition of data and information, the application program along with the operating system, higher language and machine code and lastly, graphical versus mathematical or statistical output. Input, process and output is the basic beginnings of turning data into information. When creating programs for any information, we first have to input data we received. This data could be for any situation such as how many customers have purchased a product or are they satisfied with the product due to customer feed back data. Once you input that data into a program writing software, It must be processed in computer language to give you the information you require. The input and process portion is very important in the program writing evolution as it is where a bulk of your work will be completed. Once the data has been processed, it will become output. This is where your information will come from. The computers inner components will allow one to complete the tasks of running programs. The Central processing unit, or CPU is essentially the brain of the computer. It processes data in the software programs and executes it for the end user. The memory or RAM in a computer is the temporary or short term memory in a computer. It allows you to open or close programs with more speed. The hard drive in a computer is for storage of all your programs and files....

...changed a lot since the 1800’s mainly because of computers. They’ve revolutionized our world to where you can simply look up what you want instead of scouring the library for your needed material. Laptops seem to have everything, nothing really bad about them. Except distractions. Some people think that laptops are great and cause no real distraction. But most think that laptops are bad because of all the access people have, and how it can be used. While technology does have its benefits, in the classroom laptops are harming students. Computers are a distraction. In the article “Computers Use Distracting” is shows a quote,” students are often distracted by whatever they’re doing on the computer.” Often times when your doing schoolwork online, you always tend to get dragged into the distraction that are much more frequent in the newer technology. Laptops are more harming to students than helping because you have just an open area of doing whatever you want on a computer, but not staying on task and staying undistracted. Another article called, “Attention, Students; Put Your Laptops Away.” a...

...Week one Why I chose the course The role of the computer/web in my life Week one on the course Get with the real-time and stop lagging I chose the Computers and Languages module because I am not as skilled or knowledgeable in computers as I would like to be. Most people know or have a “computer geek” in their group who they turn to when they don’t understand what their computer is doing or need technology related advice. I have a friend like this. Admittedly, when he talks in “compuspeak”[1] I am a little bit clueless. Recently, this frequent ‘turning’ to my friend has got me a little dizzy. When concerning my studies and efficiency, computers and technology seem to occupy centre stage. I have therefore often wished that I was a bit more clued up, I guess this where Computers and Languages comes in! ( Yeah, you can do that on the computer too, and that, and that... As a Comparative Literature student, I considered myself more of the “creative” type, with an interest in literature/creative writing, art, film and the like. However I realise now that the computer can be used as a creative resource. In exploring possible career options, I came across many ‘creative’ roles which involved video editing, online researching, online reviewing, social networking, blogging and editing and maintaining websites. Whilst I know that this course won’t turn me into a complete “computer geek” It will help me develop the valuable skills I need to enter the ‘creative’ roles I am interested...

...Arguments about Computer dependency Since their invention, people far and wide have become increasingly dependent on computers. Computers have found their way into just about every aspect of our lives, and in most cases, they make things easier for us [4] . They allow us to work from home, socialize with our friends and family who live too far away to visit, and they provide an ever-welcome stress relief when we come home from school or work and just want to have some fun. But as we increasingly rely on computers to get through the day, the question begs to be asked: have we become too dependent on computers? Despite the many benefits of computers, there are also a number of arguments against them, one of which is the negative effect some believe they are having on children's education. Illiteracy is a growing issue, and many say that computers are to blame. In the past few years, many teachers have taken to shuffling their students off to a computer to type out short, quick assignments that could easily be written out by hand. While this isn't much of an issue for older students, it is an issue for the younger students who are just learning to read and write. Regardless of how much we're coming to rely on computers, printing and handwriting are a necessary skill to have. But typing out assignments has an effect on more than just the ability to print4. It can also negatively impact their spelling and grammar. While most programs now have spell- and grammar-check, they...

I just had to know the answer to the question that almost sounds like the beginning of a riddle. “How did the blind teacher teach creative writing?” I soon learned the answer, “It was with an amazing amount of passion!” I just had to find out how someone’s love of computer programing could morph into a true passion for writing. In Mr. Uptmore ’s case, this transformation occurred in his third year of college. When I entered his classroom, which is where he spends most of his time,...

...STUDY ON EVOLUTION OF COMPUTERS STUDY ON EVOLUTION OF SOFTWARE Introduction Computer software, or just software, is any set of machine-readable instructions that directs a computer's processor to perform specific operations. The term is used to contrast with computer hardware; the physical objects carry out the instructions. Hardware and software require each other and neither has any value without the other. The first theory about software was proposed by Alan Turing in his 1935 essay Computable numbers with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem (decision problem). Colloquially, the term is often used to mean application software. In computer science and software engineering, software is all information processed by computer system, programs and data. The academic fields studying software are computer science and software engineering. The types of software include web pages developed in languages and frameworks like PHP, Perl, JSP or ASP.NET and desktop applications like OpenOffice.org, Microsoft Word developed in languages like C, C++, Objective-C, Java, C#, or Smalltalk. Application software usually runs on underlying software operating systems such as Linux or Microsoft Windows. Software (or firmware) is also used in video games and for the configurable parts of the logic systems of automobiles, televisions, and other consumer electronics. Software evolution is the term used in software engineering (specifically software...
