...since the 19th century. In his essay, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Freire compares two concepts of education that are present today, banking and problem-posing. In banking teachers assume students are passive, take all control, determine what will be learned, and “fill” students with pre-selected information. Problem-posing education allows people to develop their human natures fully because it depends on dialogue, recognizes the relationship between people and the world, encourages discovery and creativity, and leads to transformation. Freire criticizes the banking method throughout the essay and clearly praises problem-posing in more than just an educational settings. From the very beginning Freire creates an urgency for change with his word usage, imagery, and exaggerated examples. For instance, narration sickness is a term used when the teacher talks about a subject as if it were “motionless, static, compartmentalized, and predictable.” Narration also leads the students to be ‘containers’ to be ‘filled’ by the teachers. Necrophilia is another one of Freire’s exaggerated imagery, comparing the banking concept and oppression to the love for the dead. As stated by Freire,”The necrophilous person is driven by the desire to transform the organic into inorganic, to approach life mechanically, as if all living persons were things…Memory, rather than experience; having, rather than being, is what counts.” Freire first introduces the “banking” concept of education as being an analogy—the...

...NIETZSCHE’S ATTEMPT TO PROVIDE THE TRUTH OF DECEPTION IN LANGUAGE Natalie Andrade Response 1 Nietzsche’s essay “On truth and lying” attempts to define how we as humans perceive the truth. How do we know what truth really is? Deeper into his essay Nietzsche starts to break down on how exactly these “truths” come to existence. Nietzsche brings up the subject of deception and how it plays in language itself. He argues about the extreme nature of language and the fact that language is essentially a man made concept implying that we as humans impose our own explanations and rhetoric on objects, thoughts and theories. From what I seem to understand here is that we as humans need to categorized each word because we have this believe that language is crucial in shaping the truth. But how can man actually ever know the actual truth when it is man who created truth? Further into his essay, Nietzsche considers how concepts are actually born, he states, “each word immediately becomes a concept, not by virtue of facts that is intended to serve as a memory of the unique….every concept comes into being by making equivalent that which is non-equivalent. Here what I think he is stating, is as time goes by words, metaphors are balanced by others implications or additions to the concept. Therefore, the concept is carried through time over and over and basically a “reality” is born? Any idea then would never have is true self, because as time passes, man imposes its own metaphor on that...

...more complex than they have to. Confucius once said, “Life is simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” This quote ostensibly covers the whole idea of this essay. We as humans have had rough time through our evolution; we have gone through much as a race that it has affected us to our core. Goulish explains it in his essay that it is our nature to complicate things. “Irreducible complexity seems to characterize the late twentieth century itself” (Goulish 557). Goulish seems to have a pretty good idea of what complexities are and how this trait of human beings has been us for as long as we can remember. Goulish does not hesitate to explain to his readers that making things complex is our nature. Goulish hits this spot right from the beginning of his essay, “Each time we experience a work of performance, we start over almost from nothing” (Goulish 557). Why does he say that? Goulish tells us that when we experience an act of performance we tend to look at it from the fresh eye instead of using our previous encounters in similar situations. He tells his readers that, come what may, we will look at things with the thought in our head that we have never encountered it before. Goulish mentions it multiple places in the essay that we are critics but “Why do we engage a critical mind?” Throughout the whole essay he has one purpose, “To try and explain to his readers why we engage a critical mind.” He does not fail to mention that this side of humans is not just limited to...

...How can the way in which we organise our thinking by using mental images, concepts and schemas help us improve our memory? There are many methods that can be used to improve our memory; in this essay we will look at the principles of mental images, concepts and schemas and how organising our thoughts can help improve our memory and our memory recall. In order to fully understand these principles, it is necessary to look at each method in turn, discuss the supporting evidence and evaluate how each can work in our favour. To gain a full insight; we need to also understand their restrictions and how each one can be subjective to the individual using it. The first way of improving memory is by using mental images, this can be used as a means to organise our thoughts by us creating iconic images in our heads (big, bold and colourful work best) and when amalgamated with semantic thought, these images provide an effective method of fixing the memory and providing better recall. This technique is often utilised when learning a new language and has been proven to be a successful way to remember basic vocabulary. An example defined by Spoors et al. 2011): imagery showing a bell being used as a bin can be used as a learning aid for the French word “poubelle” meaning “bin” as the illustration breaks down the unknown word into English counterparts which are then imagined as tangible objects – in this case a person lifting the lid off the bell shaped bin and exclaiming “pooh” at the...

...philosophical term that describes an era or movement in American culture marked by attitudes of skepticism which challenges many of the ideals of Modernism. As an opposition towards the modern era, Postmodernism can be identified in art through its related terms such as fragmentation, hyper-realism, deconstruction, pastiche and ambiguity. Specifically, postmodernism refutes such concepts as reality, the ability to reach perfection, absolute truth, the structures of capitalism, ideals represented within popular culture, political values and other core concepts related to the structures of American culture. The concept is often criticized as a truism for its ambiguity in its very definition. Ironically, ambiguity in relation to truth is as much a description of the term as it is a concept practiced within the cultural movement. For this reason, the term is perhaps most simplistically exemplified and defined through media texts which encode its ideologies. One such media text includes Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a film adapted from Hunter Thompson’s 1972 novel. In the following essay, I will define the concept of postmodernism through Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The media text uses humor to challenge modernistic ideas of one’s ability to achieve the Utopian “American dream,” which is often defined as the realization of ultimate happiness and success. Specifically, Fear and Loathing’s satirical refute of the existence of an American Dream is encoded throughout the film, a theme...

...There are several characteristics of what a good advert ought to be, including basic elements such as effective placement, compelling headlines, appropriate graphics among others. If these elements are followed to the letter, they certainly make for an appealing and persuasive advert. However, there also tends to be some shortcomings and/or limitations on any given advert; and probably an angle which would have perhaps provided a better perspective to the targeted public. This essay is therefore aimed at critiquing and analyzing the Warid Telecom TV advert for their campaign to register onto the Warid Pesa mobile money transfer platform. In the said advert, a cross section of different publics is presented - a student calls her dad; a guy calls his friend; a stranded young man calls another and a business man calls on another person – and all of them are saying “Please send me money right now!” The situation presented in the TV Ad depicts distressed characters who urgently require a service (money to be sent to them) which the advertiser purports to provide with as less stress as possible (of course in comparison to the competitors on the market). But this is in the punch line at the climax of the advert where WARID promotes their Mobile Money platform branded Warid Pesa as the only such service on the market where a customer neither needs to be currently subscribed on the Warid Telecom network nor have to wait before approval of their registration. The advert cleverly, yet...

...Ilona Apelsinov September 13th, 2015 Weekly essay #1 What is the point of music? Why do people listen to music and often tend to not understand what the lyrics are? Why do we like to listen to something we don't understand or is not inspirational? There are people in this world that like some songs for no apparent reason either because the beat is catchy or just because everyone likes it. Philosophically it is not possible to like a song for no reason because there is always a reason for our actions. For something not to have a reason, it is an action without thought. But since liking something has an idea behind it, it is impossible to like something without reasons. When you like something, it is like an emotion because emotions are caused by reasons. Everyone has reasons for liking songs, some are fond of their likings and some are not. That is why some people admit to liking the songs they listen to and some just keep it to themselves. Therefore, liking something for no reason is impossible. From my experience, I tend to listen to the songs that sound catchy. I have many reasons why I like the songs that I listen to because they are either catchy, have significant lyrics that have meanings behind them or because the words that are being sung in the song connects with the situations that I might be dealing with. People use some songs to express their emotions when they can't explain it by using their own words. For example, the song "Trap Queen"...

...REFLECTIVE ESSAY #2 During the past weeks, I had two lessons stand out for me, suicide awareness and wingman concepts. I think with my current career field these two lessons play a massive part in our day to day work environment. With the long hours and hard work, we have lost several to suicide and all of them could have been prevented by proper use of the wingman concept. As for wingman concept, if it was used more often than it is now, we would have less suicides and even alcohol related instances through out the maintenance field. For me suicide is a very rough and heart felt topic to talk about. Even harder to listen too as it hits home very hard. I lost my father when I was two years old to a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head, and now less then a year ago my ex wife shot herself due to her feeling like a failure to be a good wife and mother. With the suicide awareness lesson and the plethora of information that is brought to light, it now allows me to further understand why people often choose suicide and more over the signs leading up to it. If I had this knowledge a year ago, I would have been able to possibly prevent her attempt to take her life. Looking back to the months leading up to her attempted suicide, she had shown several signs that I did not pick up on as I was oblivious and didn’t look for any of the signs that would lead up to the incident. After going through the lesson in class and doing the readings, I can say she showed the following signs:...
