According to a study, there are about 78,000 concussions per year in youth football. Unfortunately, the concern for the safety of football players has caused a decline in its popularity. In tackle football, the leagues should be taking action to make football safer because they can provide equipment and make rules. Football leagues can provide cheaper, more effective equipment to the players. According to the text, "Young children's necks are weaker than adults', and their heads are large in proportion to their bodies: Both are risk factors." The leagues can sell and promote equipment that fits and provides more protection for the next generation who are the future of football. Concussions In The Super Bowl

...The Super Bowl is our country's national celebration of football, a game Dr. Bennet Omalu, the doctor who discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), calls our "collective societal intoxication and addiction." From an entertainment perspective, football is more popular than ever. Attendance figures, television ratings and the growth of fantasy football tell us that. However, while the game's popularity might be on the upswing, so is the scientific evidence that football is hazardous to the human brain. And it's not just concussions. "In terms of the truth, it is not about concussions," said Omalu in a recent interview with sport and culture writer Patrick Hruby. "It is about blows to the head." Long term, repetitive sub-concussive...

Heading Into Brain Damage - One Hit at a Time

...Football is the epitome of strategic warfare, encapsulating violence, might, strength and valor into a colossally barbaric sporting event. Hall of Fame legend, and former wide-receiver of the New York Giants, Frank Gifford once said, “Football is like nuclear warfare. There are no winners, only survivors." Over the last fifty years, football has grown to become America’s most popular game, however, this fame and glory is accompanied by an alarming rise in tragic accidents on the field of competition. Even with rules and regulations meant for the protection of both the players and the integrity of game, traumatic injuries are escalating at an alarming rate. In all leagues ranging from pee-wee to the National Football League (NFL), the athleticism and size of the players are at an all-time high and continues to increase each season. However, such increases in athleticism have highlighted the greatest flaw in modern football: the iconic football helmet has become the single most destructive weapon in sports. Helmets have become the heads of missiles that launch through the air and crush into opponents’ skulls, leaving players with closed head injuries as a result of multiple concussions. The football helmet found its roots with the leatherheads; however the false sense of security and protection the helmet provides has led to the worst injuries the sports industry has ever seen. The multiple hits to the head can and will eventually lead a player to the emergency room with a concussion...

...Jason Moore The University of Findlay Dangers of Football Abstract Using the research of Juliet Macur, Barry Wilner, Dr. Robert Graham and Melanie Stout of TMJ4 news, I observed and analyzed concussions amongst American football. In the past, head injuries amongst football have been known to be looked over and not taken serious. Based on what I’ve found, players who did not tend to their injuries suffered serious health issues later on in their careers. Cases about Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, dementia and etc. amongst former players are a lot more common. Tragic reports about former players committing suicide, as well as incidents amongst the youth. Dangers of Football Football is arguably the most dangerous contact sport in America. Head injuries and concussions have always been a part of the game. The number of tragic cases and the lifetime effects that experts are beginning to witness on the older players, make experts question the health of the youth’s future in the sport. People do not take sports related head injuries as seriously as they should. Many NFL players who did not tend to their head injuries like they should’ve were known to have had C.T.E. (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). Many cases and reports about head injuries go to show why athletes, parents, doctors and even coaches should start taking head injuries more seriously. The main reason for this could be improper technique and teaching, neglect, and other factors. But for these players, high school is followed by college and possibly the National Football League (NFL), where concussions get much more attention and criticism. Concussions in the NFL...
