...Communication plays a central role in handling conflict. The word conflict nowadays becomes synonymous with most departments within an organization. It's paramount to remember that there are many strategies we can use in conflict situations, but each of us tends to habitually use some strategies more often than others. Throughout this paper I will discuss my primary conflict management style (Collaborator) down to my lesser preferred style (compromiser, controller, accommodator, and avoider). Conflict is an interactive process between two or more parties that requires effective human interaction. The Conflict Management Strategies we can choose from in situations are as follow: • Controlling - using formal authority or other power that you possess to satisfy your concerns without regard to the concerns of the party that you are in conflict with. • Accommodating - allowing the other party to satisfy their concerns while neglecting your own. • Avoiding - not paying attention to the conflict and not taking any action to resolve it. • Compromising - attempting to resolve a conflict by identifying a solution that is partially satisfactory to both parties, but completely satisfactory to neither. • Collaborating - cooperating with the other party to understand their concerns and expressing your own concerns in an effort to find a mutually and completely satisfactory solution (win-win). Research on conflict management styles has found that each of us tends to use one or two of...

...Understanding Conflict Handling Styles In a dispute, it's often easier to describe how others respond then to how we respond. Each of us has a predominant conflict style that we use to meet our own needs. By examining conflict styles and the consequences of those behaviors, we can gain a better understanding of the impact that our personal conflict style has on other people. With a better understanding, you then can make a conscious choice on how to respond to others in a conflict situation to help reduce work conflict and stress. Behavioral scientists Kenneth Thomas and Ralph Kilmann, who developed the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, have identified five styles to responding to conflict—competition, collaboration, compromise, avoidance, and accommodation. No conflict style is inherently right or wrong, but one or more styles could be inappropriate for a given situation and the impact could result in a situation quickly spiraling out of control. 1. Competing Value of own issue/goal: High Value of relationship: Low Goal: I win, you lose People who consistently use a competitive style come across as aggressive, autocratic, confrontational, and intimidating. A competitive style is an attempt to gain power and pressure a change at the other person’s expense. A competitive style of managing conflict can be appropriate when you have to implement an unpopular decision, make a quick decision, the decision is vital in a crisis, or it is important to let others know how...

...Introduction Article 15(4) was inserted into the Constitution by way of amendment and wasn’t a clause which was present in the Constitution, since it came into being. This amendment gave the executive powers to make any special provisions for the advancement of any socially and educationally backward classes of citizens or for the Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes. This provision was considered necessary by the legislature as India gained independence and a democratic form of Government came into being, the need to uplift the down-trodden was felt. Reservation were to be implemented initially for only 10 years but have being continuing till now. Over the years the extent to which reservations should be allowed has been a matter of great controversy and has been discussed in various cases. The present condition is that reservations in general should not exceed 50%. But this was not always the position. Since Article 15(4) permits discrimination in reverse by reserving seats in educational institutions, the extent of such reservation assumes great importance for the citizen, for the public generally and for the State. An instructive illustration of such appointments to unreserved and reserved posts is furnished by the facts of T. Devadasan v. Union of India and Anr. Out of 45 appointments to be made, 16 were made from unreserved seats and 29 from candidates belonging to the Schedule Castes and Tribes. The petitioner complained that although he had obtained 61 per cent marks...

...CONFLICT MANAGEMENT INTRODUCTION Conflict refers to all kinds of opposition or antagonistic interaction. It is based on scarcity of power, resources or social positions, and differing value structures. Conflict has two faces, functional (or constructive) and the other dysfunctional (or destructive). Dysfunctional conflict is crucial for organizations and without an effective means of handling it, conflict can tear relationship apart and interferes with the exchange of ideas, information and resources in groups and between departments. Well manage conflict on the other hand helps workers anticipate and solve problems and makes them feel confident. This also strengthens their relationships and makes them become more committed to the organization THE FACES OF CONFLICT The organizational benefits of functional conflict are increased effort and improved performance, enhanced creativity, and personal development. The symptoms of dysfunctional conflict include indecision, resistance to change, emotional outbursts, and stress. By monitoring these various signs and symptoms, management may decide when to encourage conflict and when it is time to step in and attempt to resolve or neutralize it. The first is called conflict triggers, when stimulate conflict, and the second involves conflict resolution techniques, which are used when functional conflict deteriorates into dysfunctional conflict. Types of conflict situation Since conflict has both positive as well as negative...

...THE POWER LINE POLES If you were in the position of Gordon Yarrow how would you deal with the bid exceptions requested? If I was Mr. Yarrow, I would request Henry Nelson Co. that several pre-award meetings are held to discuss the exceptions made with the goal of setting final agreements on these exceptions prior contracting the services. I would also make sure that these discussions are recorded as minutes of the meetings so that the document(s) can become an integral part of Henry Nelson’s quote and eventually included in the contract agreement. With regards to each of the exceptions requested (Exhibit 2), my comments are: • Exception 1: To handle this exception, Moren should request Henry Nelson and for that matter all bidders, to include in their quote a Jobsite delivery. Although most of the companies in the US are more familiar with the UCC transportation terms, Moren should request that the latest version of Incoterms (developed by the ICC) should be used as the applicable transportation terms of the contract. By enforcing the use of Incoterms, Moren may even specify that the quoted terms should be DDP-Jobsite which would indicate Henry Nelson and all other bidders that the supplier “must” carry the responsibility and risk of delivering the equipment to the jobsite by the requested date. With this in mind, Henry Nelson and other bidders should include as part of their cost estimate the costs for using DDP-Jobsite delivery terms. This way, the sales price to Moren is...

...and prevalent in the current time. Still, acquisitions are tricky. Corporate cultures need to mesh, as do revenue and expense synergies. While CEO's often see themselves as empire builders looking to grow their companies by any means necessary, the reality is that successful acquisitions that really help companies long-term are in the minority. There are many factors involved during M&A such as: volume and valuation, growth, TMT convergence, talent management, business transformation to name a few. According to our case study one of the most important aspects that we believe during this process is leadership and change management but at the same time it is also very important to emphasize on employee satisfaction. Of course, there are conflicts during any such big change and there will be instances that require tough decisions on part of leaders but an important thing during this change is to focus on the big picture. The company chosen for our case study will be referred as Company A and Company B hereafter: Company A: It is a big firm of about 1800 employees. They started out by reselling technology products and gradually made their presence in commercial ranging from Finance, Healthcare, media etc. and government domains ranging from security to big data analysis. Their goal behind acquisition as stated by their CEO is: “We want to be the world’s largest pure-play integrated mobile enterprise solutions company”. Acquiring Company B would help them expand into mobile commerce...
