...Product: Software Production/Development Assessment Item 1 Words: 549 1.0 Introduction This brief features research related to conversing about sexual relations in the workplace between employees. Following the summary of the topic, there is an analysis of implications within App2go’s workplace environment in relation to the issue. The brief will conclude with recommendations for App2go to monitor and control the implications of discussing sexual relations within the work atmosphere. 2.0 Summary of the issue The current issue focuses on talking about sex/sexual relations within the workplace. Talking about sex has become very commonplace in today’s society; it has become very easy to cross the line between professional discussion and discussions meant for after work. It is becoming an ever-increasing problem within the workplace as persons and employees think of themselves as innocently flirting, cracking a joke or making a risqué comment (Seidenfeld,2010). The persons themselves may not have a problem with their actions and remarks; it may in fact be their co-workers who have difficulties understanding and dealing with the said actions. Small businesses are more likely to entail conversations about sex within the workplace due to the likeliness of little to no Human Resource censure (Cain,2015). App2go as a business has grown from a small business of roughly ten employees to a medium size business with over 100 in the space of three years. It is important...

...Assignment 02: In an essay of about 1200 words conduct a close reading of this dialogue between Julie and Lois; discuss what it reveals about their individual personalities. In particular, consider notable language features that are present in the passage through a conversational analysis that includes aspects such as turn-taking, cooperative principles, implicature, and politeness strategies. You should provide quotations from the passage to substantiate your essay’s argument. Individual personalities {Julie and Louis are sisters who sound and look alike. We are told Louis is a year older and more conservative. The play opens with Julie in the bathtub. There is a window above the tub and Louis’ date Mr. Calkins comes to it and begins talking with Julie. He believes he is talking to Louis as they sound alike. (He can not see in the tub to know it is Julie as this is not a perverted play) The bulk of the dialogue is between Julie and Mr. Calkins. Eventually, however, he realizes he is talking to Julie because Louis walks out the front door. The last line is Julie preparing to emerge naked from the tub and the curtain falls.} Fitzgerald uses Julie and Louis to portray the distinction between the old generation and the youth of the 20’s. Louis, who is older, exemplifies the traditional women who were used to the strict moral code of the early 1900’s. Louis is flabbergasted when Julie tells her that she often walks to the tub naked instead of wearing a towel, “ Why, You little...

...communication, and may include informing employees of company-related issues, training new hires, speaking to the general public and maintaining business to business relationships. Persuasion through marketing and advertising is another purpose of oral communication in business. It is used to show a group of people a need and provide a solution to that need. The following are some of the situations in which oral communication is employed. Example 1: Presentations One form of oral communication in a business setting is a presentation. Presentations are usually an organized conveyance of information to a group of people. Stylistically, they tend to be far more formal than informal, and rely more heavily on data and facts than they do analysis. Presentations may include some dialog after the sender of the message has finished their speech, but they are, by and large, much more monologue reliant. This makes it important for the speaker to anticipate possible objections to the message and address them in the actual speech. Example2: Client interaction Another form of oral communication in business encompasses interaction with clients. Depending on the level of connection between the employee and the client, the communication in these interactions can range from incredibly...

...Turn-taking in Conversations: Overlaps and Interruptions - Recorded Conversation Analysis - Introduction Turn-taking behavior and interaction patterns play a key role in the process through which the participants interpret each-other's meanings and interactions. The study of "rules" of conversational behavior, turn-taking, overlapping of turns, pausing between the turns, etc. was pioneered by Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson (1974). Interruption, according to West and Zimmerman, disrupts a current speaker - although disruption as such can also be regarded as interaction. Drummond claims that the disruptive potential of a turn can and should be evaluated based on the way the overlap was resolved in the interaction. Lerner (1989) observes that there are interruptions which can be justified in the ongoing interaction based on the sequential context of turns that lead to interruptive turns. He calls these justified interruptions. There are also "delayed completions", which represent a device for resolving overlap; a locator producing them might have been 'interrupted' by a current speaker before reaching the end of a (prior) turn - this gives the locutor the status of an interuptee, and thus the interuptee gains the "right" to complete his or her previous turn by interrupting the current speaker. In defining overlaps, the following qualify as important concepts: 1. Transition Relevant Places (TRPs) - they are a natural place for the occurrence of short overlaps or simultaneous...

Recently three incidents have been reported which have resulted in deteriorating the environment and have resulted in situations that have harmed the culture of the organization. The situations are described and analyzed below in detail. David and Jeremy: A confrontational conversation took place between David, director of the company, and Jeremy an ambitious researcher. Which eventually resulted in resignation of Jeremy and loss of crucial company asset. David’s intentions were not to get rid of Jeremy but to convey the negative feedback in a neutral way. David did not like conflicts whereas Jeremy was driven by his superiority complex because of the higher status of his academic background and he always took a defensive stance when being criticized. At the start of the conversation, David opted for the indirect approach and started with a lighter note to ease the flow of conversation, but judging Jeremy`s response, he adopted the painful-but-quick bombshell (direct) approach and became blunt about Jeremy’s attitude which was affecting the performance of the department. While, Jeremy got the wrong impression at the start and had assumed David had called...

...are evident in the language, and also appear to share common contextual and sequential properties. When we claim that something is an instance of repair we mean that speakers are adhering to ‘problems in speaking, hearing and understanding’ within the conversation (Schegloff, Jefferson & Sacks: 1977: 362). Importantly, however, it must be acknowledged that repair can appear without an overtly observable ‘error’. (Schegloff, Jefferson & Sacks: 1977: 362). Laasko and Sorjonen claim that ‘cutting off’ is a form of self-repair that features within an ongoing turn-constructional unit and as a result ‘the utterance is heard as prosodically discontinuous and incomplete’(2010). In most cases speakers cut off a word in progress, although alternatively the speaker may cut off after the completion of a word. One of the ways we find non-repair cut offs are those that acknowledge ‘topic-external factors’. These include disjunctional observations or subjects that are disconnected from the topic and most often linked to contextual issues or topic external thoughts. For example, they feature ‘now’ issues; where the focus is shifted to the context of the conversation itself like whether the hearer is free to talk, analysis of one’s own speech or the bringing up of a topic or subject that is detached from the current direction of speech. As we will observe, all of these ‘disjunctions’ eventually return to the original interrupted...

...Role of the Challenge Team The role of the challenge team is to act as a second set of analysts or consultants who have been brought in to analyze the case and offer suggestions. It is an expert “second opinion” -- much like consulting another doctor to see if they both agree on the diagnosis. The challenge team should understand the presenting team’s analysis and also come up with their answers. The idea is to enhance and extend the conversation rather than to criticize. When you agree with a presenting team's analysis, you do not need to nit pick and find something to criticize. The best thing is to affirm your agreement and then extend the conversation to cover other aspects of the issues that the presenting team may not have addressed. For example, the team members could share their personal experiences from work or consider the application of the type of analysis in the case to their work environment. Obviously, when the challenge team has approached an issue differently, they have an opportunity to explore these differences so the rest of the class can appreciate the alternative ways of analyzing a case. In exploring differences, try to enhance the understanding of the class about why it is possible for two teams to look at the same issue in various ways. While you are not trying to score debating points, you must argue persuasively for your view while keeping an open mind to the presenting team’s viewpoint. Each member of the challenge team will have approximately...
