Rather than only using these forecasting indicators guide decision making about increasing correctional facility capacities, we...

...Correctional Facilities As many people know, the United States’ correctional system isn’t perfect. It is actually far from it. Plenty of people who are incarcerated are, in fact, not guilty of what they were charged for. Along with men who were wrongly convicted, there are men who committed the crime, but were found not guilty. These are just two of the many imperfections in our correctional system. Despite saying this, I feel that it is the fairest system our world has ever seen. Our prisoners get their basic necessities along with a little extra. Although I can’t avoid the fact that living in prison is obviously not someone’s ideal life, it is necessary because it gives us a reason not to commit crimes. Out of the large number of men who have authority over the prisoners, there are bound to be some who abuse their power. Although that may be the case, the correctional officers are necessary in order to keep watch of the inmates and keep order. The inmates make up a much larger number than the correctional officers and lets face it, prisoners aren’t known to be the nicest people. This being said, it is definitely necessary for the officers to be strict and aggressive in order to get the inmates’ respect. As far as the general idea of having prisons, I’m all in favor of it. Serving time in a jail is not only is a punishment, but it gives them time to realize that their actions have consequences. Many prisoners lived a fast-paced lifestyle prior to their conviction. Being...

...Correctional system Shelly Boyer CJS/230 10/25/2015 Jesus Garcia Correctional System Everyone who decides to commit a crime should not do it if they do not want to deal with the punishments that might come with it. All crime has a minimum and maximum sentence that a judge is allowed to give them and they are not all going to jail or prison. Since the jails and prisons are overcrowded for misdemeanor offences the judge might have them pay fines, do community service, go to rehab, probation, or do weekend time. Now for felony offense there are some harsher punishments then misdemeanors like parole and or sentenced to death. The punishment needs to fit the crime because the 8th amendment to the constitution is against cruel and unusual punishment. Fines a judge might give to them for like a traffic violations like speeding or not using their turn signal and they would have to pay a certain amount that the judge says. Community service would be given for like DUI where the judge might have them go and talk about the risks of driving drunk to young people. Going to rehab someone might get if they have a drug or alcohol problem and really need help the judge might send them there instead of going to jail. Probation is where someone is found guilty of a crime but instead of going to jail they are allowed to stay in the community under certain conditions. Serving weekend time might be given to a person convicted of a crime but has to take care of a child...

...The life of a Correctional Officer and the challenges they face in order to uphold justice. The department of corrections is designed to help secure, protect, and confine offenders from the public. They are responsible for overseeing those whom have been arrested and are awaiting trial as well as those whom have already been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in a jail, detention center, or prison. They goal is to maintain security in order to prevent disturbances, assaults, or escapes. Correctional Officers have no law enforcement responsibilities outside of where they work. Their work is hard and has little public gratification, just because a criminal is locked away in a facility does not mean he or she is gone, it’s simply it means there is someone else dealing with them. As far as a profession, corrections work is one of the most stressful in law enforcement. Officers must remain alert at all times in order to avoid being attacked or killed by the inmates that they supervise. The intensity of the environments often prompts officers to shut down emotionally, reducing their ability to perform their duties at work and home. One of the major safety concerns is the use of unusual weapons by inmates. Although the officers regularly perform conduct cell and inmate checks, inmates find a way to make them; they also face the use of physical force, the work duties of corrections officer’s poses a threat to their own safety and sometimes their...

...The roles of corrections officers differ from institution to institution, with some being more or less involved within the prison societies than others. This is mostly due to different management styles being used by different wardens and prison directors. With the tough duty of passing and enforcing policies that preserve the control and protection of the guards, along with keeping the inmates happily non-rebellious, the corrections officials have challenges on their hands. From risking their lives daily, to monitoring and interfering with inmate activities, the officers’ functions vary. With many institutions implementing a control model, this places the officers in total control of the inmates and their activities, causing them to become more personally involved with inmate interactions. Keeping all communications professional and formal the officers handle and follow strict daily procedures while upholding control and monitoring of inmate activity. The officers participate in many personal routines daily such as transporting and locking offenders away, checking, surveillance, and counting. In some lower security facilities the prison staff have a more interpersonal relationship with the inmates. They may have more informal communications and build closer working relationships. These facilities often allow the prison staff to make judgments when handling prisoner issues. This builds more trust between the inmates and staff promoting a more relaxed manner between them. Under...

...Correctional Theories Amber Eagler Abstract This paper is about working in a senator’s office as a staffer. The latest charges of abuse at the local jail, has caught the attention of the senator. The senator has recently been focusing on the state correctional system which has become a constant target of criticism for an increasingly vocal number of civil libertarian groups. The senator is speaking before the state bar association next week and intends to address the ways in which the correctional system may be improved. This paper is a detailed outline on the correctional theory in general, as well as a series of suggestions on ways to improve some of the nontraditional theories of corrections. Correctional Theories We all know that life is difficult and sometimes with those difficulties come more problems. What you put into life is what you get out. As the famous Isaac Newton once quoted “For every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction.” For this very reason correctional theories were created. These theories are based on two common principles within the corrections; system-punishment and rehabilitation. The criminal justice system’s idea of justice, punishment and correction is made up of a combination of strenuous, criticizing, and practical theories. ...

...work together with correction systems to ensure that these responsibilities are met. Also referred to as the penal system, the correctional system is charged with the duty of administering jurisdictions, especially to community based programs, parole and probation victims. This paper is a description of the history of correctional systems in America and discusses two needs that require to be fixed so that correction systems run more safely and efficiently. History of correction systems in America The history of the correctional system in the United States dates back to the 17th century during which imprisonment as a form of punishment had begun to become popular (Roth, 2006). The American Revolution largely contributed to the efforts of initializing a system that would deal with law offenders. During this period, prisons in the form of detention facilities and dungeons were commonly used in different parts of America. The efforts of building prisons in and around America began in three major waves were the first wave began during the infamous Jacksonian Era (Stanko et al, 2004). This era led to extensive use of imprisonment and heavy labor as a way of punishing penalty for most crimes, especially in the wake of the civil war. The second wave began soon after the civil war and brought many new mechanisms in the criminal justice and correctional system. This change involved the inclusion of parole, uncertain sentencing of criminals and probation. The final wave occurred during...

...February 3, 2014 8:29:57 AM CST6 days ago ED7590 Discussion 6d1 This post required a peer-reviewed journal article be selected from the Capella Library. The chosen article was about a descriptive study completed of nine states and the Funding support for school-wide positive behavioral interventions and support implementation and scale-up. This article examines the major focus and the difficulty states face with the process of selecting, implementing, and scaling-up evidence-based practices. The article also contains a discussion about the renewed commitment to improving student outcomes and how that has led directly to the need for effective practices implemented at scale (Gage et. Al, 2013). In particular, this article examines the funding decisions of nine specific states and makes note that funding decisions made at state, regional, and district levels remain a key to large-scale implementation of effective practices (Gage et. Al, 2013). No one will argue that the main objective of education in the United States is to offer all students a free and suitable public education so they may become active and vital members and contributors to society. However, the process involved in funding education to achieve this goal is a very complex one mainly because it includes interests, policies, and dollars originating from and flowing among local education agencies (LEAs), state education agencies (SEAs), and federal government agencies (e.g., U.S. Departments of Education...

...ETHICAL AND SOCIALLY RESPONSIVE BUSINESS TERM PAPER WEEK 10 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS STRAYER UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR DOCTOR WILSON HUNTLEY TODD J. DUPONT 13 JUNE 2013 In a time where society is on the verge of just about everything, our definitions of luxury has become greatly reduced. While “Living Well” was seen as paying your bills on time, and having a nice savings account, this has dwindled to just paying the bills. Consumers are spending their money more frugality than ever. Businesses have to compete with so many other companies, for the average person’s money that there is no room for error. As the CEO of the Cheese Cake Factory, my focus and attention for all staff members will be on general standards, and the conduct of company staff, compliance with the laws that are set forth for the Cheese Cake Factory and its affiliates, and the use of company electronics. We will also identify the steps in which the conduct will be examined and enforced. In conclusion I will discuss the ways in which our corporation can participate in the community to make a positive impact on consumers. Proctor and Gamble, 3M Company, and Johnson and Johnson have dated back for over 80 years (The Motley Rule) the reason is quite simple. A company standard that was unprecedented. A corporation is a family, and every person has a responsibility. Treated with dignity and respect, employees are supported and encouraged to perform at the highest level that each of them are capable of. All of...

...Sexual assault within a correctional institution is something that most citizens who live freely outside of such facilities may think is merely a small inconvenience that few criminals may possibly experience while incarcerated within the prison system. However, this is an issue that has gained a great deal of attention from those within the facilities, and those who study the facilities as well. In the article “Responding to Incidents of Sexual Victimization in Correctional Institutions: Correctional Officer Perspectives”, written by Carrie L. Cook and Jodi Lane, sexual assault in correctional institutions and how it is responded to is studied from the perspective of the correctional officer. According to Cook & Lane (2017), “This study examines...

...Plan to Improve Correctional Facilities Patricia Saylor Dexter Levin Corrections November 10, 2013 In general, rehabilitation programs have been effective in reducing recidivism among prison convicts since they are mostly focused on treating the criminal causing behavior of prisoners by eliminating completely the factors or circumstances that drive them to commit criminal acts. Criminologists such as Martinson who conducted research on the effectiveness of rehabilitative programs such as educational, community based and transcendental programs noted that rehabilitative programs had a higher efficacy when they were oriented towards providing treatment to prison convicts so as to reduce recidivism. Martinson noted that both the educational and transcendental rehabilitative programs were designed to provide prisoners with life skills that they could use to manage their criminal causing behavior as well as equip them with technical skills that would improve the quality of their lives (Prison conditions, 2013). Rehabilitative programs that are focused on the principles of effective intervention are able to target the known factors of recidivism thereby necessitating change and also enabling the incorporation of cognitive or behavioral treatments to reinforce the behavior of the criminal offender by eliminating criminal thinking patterns. Principles of effective intervention ensure that rehabilitative programs are able to take into account the various characteristics of offenders...

...Correctional Officers Experience The control exercised over offenders in a correctional environment is called custody. The custody levels are maximum, medium, to minimum they refer to the way prisons or units within prisons are classified. The three C’s of corrections are care, custody, and control that correctional officers learn in training. The correctional officers will present themselves as professional at all times. The officers will let the prisoners know we are here to keep safety and security within the prison walls. The prison having well-trained officers and well-orchestrated schedule for the officers to follow will help to better security within the prison. The officers will communicate with each other at all time they are in the prison own stress as it is. Inmates can pick up on the officer’s inability to focus on their job and use that. Correctional officers will have to keep work life and home life separated. How do you ensure professionalism among the corrections staff? Communities rely on federal and state prisons, county jails, and other correctional facilities to help ensure public safety by operating secure facilities. Correctional officials recognize that their work is a public service and that unethical behavior and /or misconduct erodes public confidence in these officials. It is for this reason that corrections departments across the country adopt and enforce codes of ethics and conduct for correctional officers and other employees whose job...
