Two of the more significant people during the Conquest of America was Hernán Cortés and Moctezuma. Cortés and Moctezuma were both exceptional leaders. Although they were great leaders their ideologies were vastly different. Cortés’ justification for his actions came through his strong belief in his ability to “succeed where none had before”(Chapter 3 Section 1 Pg 111). Cortés brought 600 men, 16 horses and a few cannons along with him on his voyage to the new lands and then began to head inland towards Tenochtitlan. Cortés believed in his strength, but he made alliances with neighboring tribes who feared the Aztecs, to gain the upper hand.
