...A Study on Purchase Pattern of Cosmetics among Consumers in Kerala Dr. Vinith Kumar Nair* Dr. Prakash Pillai R* Introduction Understanding behaviour of consumers is a key to the success of business organizations. Marketing personnel are constantly analyzing the patterns of buying behaviour and purchase decisions to predict the future trends. Consumer behaviour can be explained as the analysis of how, when, what and why people buy. Consumer behavior can be understood as: "The decision process and physical activity individuals engage in when evaluating, acquiring, using, or disposing of goods and services." (Loudon and Della Bitta, 1980). Nowadays, this phenomenon, can also be illustrated in the following way: "activities people undertake when obtaining, consuming, and disposing of products and services" (Blakwell, Minard and Engel, 2001). A study by Voss and Parasuraman (2003) suggests that the purchase preference is primarily determined by price than quality during pre-purchase evaluation. Given explicit quality information, price had no effect on pre-purchase or post-consumption quality perceptions. Instead, post consumption quality evaluations had a favorable impact on price evaluations. Another study by Chernev (1997) analyzed the effect of common features on brand choice and the moderating role of attribute importance. It is argued that when brand attributes differ in importance, with the best value on the most important attribute, thus further polarizing brands’ choice shares...

...Cosmetics’ Effect on College Girls Today, when walking around the college campus, you will have a hard time finding a college girl without any makeup. Many college girls show off their “beauty” with a magical mask—makeup. Under the decoration of cosmetics, each of them hides their physical flaws very successfully, hiding their natural beauty as well. Since cosmetics give them confidence, they do not want to look at the health problem that it causes. And they are absolutely willing to spend a lot of their time applying makeup and a good portion of their money buying makeup. As a result, their grades become lower while they become addicted to cosmetics, and they feel anxious and uncomfortable to see themselves when they remove their masks. Despite the positive effect that makeup has on beauty, restraining from using cosmetics can help college girls attain a more successful college life. Media always has a huge effect on the way people think. In many fashion magazines, TV shows or advertisements, we can see most women wear makeup such as mascara, lipsticks, eye shadow, eye liners, and foundation. They tell us how they feel confident under the cosmetic condition. Eventually, they affect people’s perception of female’s beauty—if women want to show their attractiveness, they must wear makeup. Many college girls like fashion. Through the media, the images of those beautiful women plant an inaccurate message in college girls’ minds: cosmetics can make them as attractive as those models...

In the ancient Egyptian time they use to create the world’s first cosmetics to the scientifically advanced products of today that can do everything from hide pores, smooth complexions, and turn pale green of your eyes a vivid shade of emerald. Make up has been an integral part of human kind for thousands of years. Over the centuries, women used burnt matches to darken their eyes, berries to stain their lips and young boy’s urine to fade their freckles. They even swallowed ox blood in some misguided attempt to improve their complexions. Women throughout history put their health at risk with many of their homemade cosmetics. ...To L'Oréal, Brazil's Women Need New Style of Shopping By CHRISTINA PASSARIELLO (See Correction & Amplification below .) RIO DE JANEIRO—Brazilian women are among the biggest spenders on beauty products anywhere. But the world's largest cosmetics company, L'Oréal SA, has faltered in Brazil. The reason: Brazilian women from the banks of the Amazon to Sao Paulo's slums and the affluent beach communities of Rio de Janeiro have traditionally bought their skin creams and mascaras from door-to-door sales representatives, not the shops where L'Oréal sells its brands. Cosmetics giant L'Oreal is trying to change the way Brazilian women buy makeup. WSJ's Christina Passariello reports from Rio De Janeiro. The French company won't use the direct-sales approach, but the company has adopted a strategy that takes a page from it: introducing personal beauty advisers at department stores. L'Oréal also plans to offer a new line of lightening creams at pharmacies. "Our big bet here is to create a makeup business in retail from scratch," said Jean-Paul Agon, L'Oréal chief executive, as he picked up a tube of Maybelline mascara, one of his company's many brands, in a Lojas Americanas department store in a middle-class Rio neighborhood. "The more the market develops, the less relevant direct sales will be." For L'Oréal, winning over Brazilian women is crucial if it is to meet its goal of adding one billion consumers—a doubling of its current clientele—over the next decade. L'Oréal currently...

...Cosmetics advertising works by using several different techniques that encourage its target to buy specific cosmetics and skincare products based on their needs. The effectiveness of the advertising typically depends on convincing people that the product being advertised actually can improve their beauty and that most importantly, they are in need of an appearance enhancement. L’oreal, is one of the world’s largest cosmetic companies coming out of Paris, France. They have succeeded in this field largely due to its marketing, and advertising ads persuading women around the world to purchase their product and instantly become more beautiful. By analyzing their ads and products released in 2010 compared to 2014, it seems as though colors seemed to be the trend. I noticed in their ads, all of their models were marketing bright or bold colors. Whether it was eye shadow, lipstick, and even the color of their hair, it was more fashionable. In today’s advertising I noticed more of the naked/natural look with matching skin tone makeup, black or shadows, and also products promising to reduce wrinkles in older women. In a time of high unemployment, in which older workers may be concerned about age discrimination, this type of advertising can be very effective. According L’oreals annual sales report of 2010, the sales profit came out to 19.5 billion in euros at a +18.6% operating profit. The 2014 annual profit has not been released yet but according to L’oreal, the company reported...

...Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Jack Welch Management Institute Introduction Social media campaigns are extremely important in today’s marketing. Awareness of a product/service is the only way your campaign can be successful. People cannot buy or support what they do not know about. In order to optimize sales and revenue, it is wise to utilize an integrated marketing campaign that attracts attention, draws interest, creates desire, and calls to action (Week Eight, Lecture One). The strategy of advertising and promotion via social media is a success that has been proven over and over again. Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Women all over the world use cosmetics, hair products, and facial products on a daily basis. No wonder there is constant concern with the ingredients and production process of things that we put in or on our body every day. Many cosmetics or personal care products, especially those that are chemically based, are often tested on animals and not humans. That makes true reactions to the products unpredictable and sometimes inaccurate. Animal skin is more durable, adaptable, and less sensitive thank humans, so this could provide a false reading in testing scenarios. There are many campaigns and advocates for government regulation and safety verifications with regards to cosmetics and personal care products. However there are some that are actually doing something about it, as opposed to just talking about it. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is a non-profit coalition...

...Cosmetic War: The Influence of Cosmetic Advertising in our Society Advertising has become a massive part of our social environment, and can be seen at large throughout any industrialized society. Nowadays it is virtually impossible to avoid ads while carrying on with your daily life. Our daily dosage comes from television, radio, magazines, newspapers, billboards, and most recently, social media, among others. The average person is exposed to as many as 5,000 advertisements a day, and nearly 10,000,000 in their lifetime (Gustafson). With that said, advertising’s impact in society is so prevalent that if advertisers do not take caution, it can also become easily detrimental. Cosmetic advertising can be held accountable for feeding especially women with unrealistic results and false standards of beauty. The problems with cosmetic advertising and the effect it has mainly on, but not limited to, women are innumerable. Considering the fact that “cosmetics are a major expenditure for many women, with the cosmetics industry grossing around 7 billion dollars a year,” cosmetic advertising is a practice that should be approached with caution, as it affects so many women daily (Thompson). The most simplistic and widely targeted critique of cosmetic advertising comes from the excessive use of photo manipulation in ads, including Photoshop and the use of filters. These tools create unrealistic images of the benefits the product can actually offer, causing women to become more dissatisfied...
