In The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia by Philip Sydney, there comes a point in the text where the mother of Philoclea, Gynecia, discovers that Cleophilia is not the Amazon she says she is. In fact, Gynecia learns that Cleophilia is really a man named Pyrocles who is trying to use the disguise to woe Gynecia’s daughter. When she learns of this she falls deeply in love with him and threatens to tell everybody about his deception if he does not sleep with her.
She says, “But alas, as they who seek to enrich themselves by mineral industry, their first labour is to find the mine, which to their cheerful comfort being found, if after any unlooked-for stop or casual impediment keep them from getting the desired ore, they are so much more grieved
