...The Time for Employee Recognition and Rewards Programs Is Now Thesis: Employee Recognition and Rewards Programs Can Generate Significant Revenue and Profits Introduction In today’s economy, many companies are dealing with a workforce that has been – or very soon will be – reduced to core essentials. The competitive marketplace, on the other hand, cannot be put on hold until the economy improves. Attracting and retaining the very best talent is a key element to stability at any time, but it is especially so during a recession. Successful companies know that they must have the entire team fully engaged in the success of “their” company during challenging times. This is important to success not only during the recovery, but also well beyond. A lack of engagement, according to recent research, can lead to an overall reduction of 10 percent in our GNP, not to mention its effects on the corporate bottom line. Creating a climate of appreciation, where efforts are recognized and potentially rewarded, can go a long way toward strengthening the process of engagement and improving the outlook for the company as a whole. Further complicating the recession economy is the shrinking talent pool. As baby boomers retire (or hope to soon), so-called baby busters and millennials are taking over leadership roles throughout corporate America. A shortage of talented workers worldwide is inevitable in the coming years. Global recruitment will see an increase in diversity – in age, experience, language...

We propose that in an ES environment of easy information access, competitive success depends, in part, on the policies regulating enterprise information use. To explore this proposition, we examine the efficient use of different types of enterprise information in the realization of strategic performance. Efficient firms will devote fewer resources to information use to achieve the same strategic performance as less efficient firms. We employ data envelopment analysis (DEA) using data collected from Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system adopters at two different points...

Business Management

...Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. Company Background Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. (HHYY) was founded in 1993 by two business school graduates who thought there ought to be alternatives to the video game craze. Searching for a toy that could have mass market appeal they settled on yo-yos. Yo-yos have a nostalgic appeal to the baby boomer generation and are a novelty plaything for generation X. So, the main marketing thrust of HHYY is directed toward parents and grandparents rather than to the children who will actually play with the yo-yos. The latest advertising campaigns show 50-ish men competing in 1950’s era yo-yo competitions, grandmothers showing their grandsons how to do yo-yo tricks, and pre-teen girls trying to get their yo-yos away from their dads who are monopolizing them. This advertising campaign has been highly effective. After a couple of rough start-up years, HHYY achieved profitability in 1996 and has seen sales and profits increase each year since then. HHYY is a closely held Subchapter S Corporation with all the stock being held by the founders and their family members. The founders, John Cooper and Juan Martinez share the position of Office of the CEO. John is also the Chief Operating Officer (COO) while Juan is the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). An organization chart for HHYY is in Figure 1. The firm employees about 350 people in a single location in the suburbs of Cut and Shoot, Texas. Figure 1. Hi-Ho Yo-Yo, Inc. Advancements in Fmcg

...Advancements in ERP for FMCG Introduction Prior to a discussion of the advancements in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) for the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry, it is important to first take a look at some of the environmental impacts to understand the context in which we need to place our discussion. The FMCG industry is currently functioning in an uncertain political and economic environment. All of this is impacting the industry in a climate where corporate accounting practices are being heavily scrutinized and anything perceived to be discretionary spending is queried. In addition, the industry is seeing dramatic consolidation via merger and acquisition activity with leaders increasing their market share and dominance in the supply chain. Traditional product lifecycle management is being challenged with the frequent introduction of new products and services with shorter lifecycles and a focus on brand extension. All of the above is placing intense pressure on conventional manufacturing and supply chain practices. IT Trends Recent research conducted by SSA Global Technologies shows that there is an increased emphasis on cost saving and efficiency, with demands on IT to do more with less, and for new IT investments to deliver significant returns on investment than were expected in the past.1 1 SSA GT Global Manufacturing Survey 2002 Not surprisingly, in the context of the above environmental factors, research conducted by AMR Research2 found that for 2003...

Obstacle Course for Getting Buy-in for Analytics

...GARY COKINS, CPIM Analytics-Based Performance Management LLC www.garycokins.com 401 Hogans Valley Way Cary, NC 27513 e-mail: gcokins@garycokins.com _____________________________________________________________________________________ Word count = 2,491 The Obstacle Course for Getting Buy-in for Analytics Why is the adoption rate for applying analytics so slow? Technology is no longer the impediment. It once was, but software capabilities are proven. The barriers involve resistance to change and unfamiliarity. These are social, behavioral, and cultural issues; and few analysts are trained in behavioral change management. What is involved with these barriers, and how can analysts overcome resistance and get organizational buy-in? Organizations that achieve competency with analytics are able to sustain a long-term competitive advantage. Careers sometimes have more to do with luck and circumstances than being smart and competent. I have been fortunate in having luck to meet opportunity. My 1960s high school love for mathematics led to degrees in industrial engineering and operations research at Cornell University and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. After ten years in CFO and operations line manager roles, I enjoyed fifteen years in management consulting on enterprise performance improvement projects with Deloitte, KPMG, and Electronic Data Systems (EDS, now owned by HP). During my consulting years I worked...

...Reports Lean Laboratories: Competing with Methods From Toyota Mark Graban, BSIE, MSME, MBA, CPIM, Shana Padgett, BS, MT(ASCP) (ValuMetrix Services, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, Raritan, NJ) DOI: 10.1309/LMX0LEMR7R0USKUM Hospital laboratories throughout North America are successfully using “Lean” methods based on the Toyota Production System to win against multiple competitive threats. Some hospitals have used Lean to help eliminate point-of-care testing for the emergency department (ED). Other hospitals have used Lean to “insource” testing that had previously been done in outside reference laboratories. Lean can defend and protect employment for the laboratory, while also improving turnaround times and service for patients and reducing costs for the hospital. Hospital laboratories have also used freed up capacity to increase their reference laboratory work, bringing additional revenue to the hospital. an improvement of 37%, as shown in Figure 1. The laboratory was also better satisfying physicians who ordered tests for morning rounds, as the percent of tests on the charts by 7 am improved from 65% to more than 90%, as shown in Figure 2. After laboratory professionals demonstrated that they could dramatically reduce turnaround times, the ED discontinued the point-of-care trials. Since Lean implementation, Dr. Decker said, turnaround times “are definitely faster. All the docs agree,” adding, “the lab is no longer the rate-limiting step in the process.” Lean Instead of...
