...Evaluating a Website for Credibili Chamberlain College of Nursing NR500 January 8, 2016 Evaluating a Website for Credibility Receiving healthcare information for professional nurses and their patients is an important topic in today’s society. The term “just Google it” is as common as drinking a cup of morning coffee. This paper will evaluate the website Healthfinder.gov. This is a government website that provides access to disease management and tools to keep healthy. The website can be found by accessing Google.com and typing healthfinder in the search or by entering the domain name http://healthfinger.gov in the search engine browser. This paper will examine if this is a credible website to use as a professional nurse for reference material. I chose this site to review based on the wide array of healthcare topics found on this site. Characteristics of a Credible Website A website with authority helps determine if a site is credible. The site Healthfinder.gov identifies itself as a site that provides the latest health news that is evidence based. The site launched April 15, 1997 with the backing of the US government. This sites authority can be found by looking in the “about us” section. Dr. Wright is listed as the Chief Medical Advisor. His credentials of being a physician and his title of Deputy Assistant Secretary at the US Department of Health and Human Services provides authority for this site. In addition the two coordinator for the site, Office of Disease...

...Researching medical devices before purchase takes place daily throughout the healthcare world. Not only does the proper device need to be found to match the need, but multiple manufacturers usually make the device needed. Each manufacturer tries to show the unique and what they consider the best way to tackle the need. In the large capital equipment world, many times a trial is set up between the manufacturers and the end users are surveyed. This survey takes on different levels of importance depending on the decision-makers. The University of Phoenix Medical Center is in the process of building an addition that will have twelve new operating rooms replacing an existing eight room surgical suite. The existing surgical suite has eight surgical tables that will be replaced and the new surgery suite will have twelve new tables. Four manufacturers of surgery tables have been brought in for evaluation. They each had two weeks of trials and surveys were filled out by surgery employees. In order for the healthcare facility to make a good decision there is a “need to calculate the probability of something occurring or not occurring, make a judgment, consider alternatives and choose an action” (Duggan, n.d., para. 1). The event of the uncertainty is which manufacturer’s tables to choose to buy. If all things are equal the probability of picking the best table is one in four or 25%. This 25% probability can be changed through the trial of the beds in use, the survey of the hospital...

...Final Conclusion Memo Team B: RES/341 Nov 10, 2011 * Introduction The research conducted provided information to support the team’s collaborative efforts to provide a cause for the wage disparity between men and women. Credible information such as, the U.S. Census Bureau has presented statistics on women’s and men’s earnings for several decades. By analyzing a series of data, it was feasible to understand the trends in the wages. According to research analysis prepared by Consad Research Corporation, there is a difference. In pay directly associated with gender that dates back to three decades (Consad Research Corporation, 2011). Confidence Interval In addition to the Consad Research, information includes addressing data analysis using descriptive statistics, which included central tendency, dispersion, and skew data and statistical data using graphic and tabular techniques, was provided. A confidence interval was also computed to support the team’s conclusion. From our research the confidence interval is M 73.0 – 4.8 = 69.1 < M 73.9 > 73.9+ 4.8= 78.7Females earn 73.9% + 4.87 of male wages. The formulated problem statement supports a series of data collected from comparable scenarios. When we used statiscal analysis to project or reflect the earnings of women and men, we found no evidence on which we could base a prediction for a closing (or widening)...

(This is to be a within variable comparison, i.e., what is the difference between the mean of HCTotal and the median of HCTotal?). • To find the mean and median, in the SPSS data file from assignment 1, click on analyze, descriptive statistics, explore, HCTotal, and then okay. These steps will generate an output file with the needed descriptives (mean and median). The mean is the average and the median is the central point or middle value. For HCTotal, the mean is 3.65 and the median is 3.67. Factors affecting the closeness of the mean and median are the range of 1 to 4 and a skewness of -.520 which produces an imperfect bell...

...Evaluating Websites More and more people are using the internet every day. It is important to know whether a website is credible or not. There are many websites out there that give false information or they give information trying to sell a product or they want you to believe a certain way, so the information is one-sided. Anyone can set up a web page, so how do you know if what you are reading is credible or not? You ask yourself some questions about the webpage. You want to ask questions about five different things; accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, and coverage. I decided to research the United States Health and Human Services website. This website is informational website designed to present facts, letting the public know about what services are offered and how to take advantage of them. With an informational website, the URL Address frequently ends in .edu or .gov, as many of these pages are sponsored by educational institutions or government agencies. Examples of these are: dictionaries, thesauri, directories, transportation schedules, calendars of events, statistical data, and other factual information such as reports, presentations of research, or information about a topic (Alexander, Tate, 1999). I asked myself the following questions about accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, and coverage.. . Accuracy – how accurate is the information on the page? Ask yourself the following questions: Can you verity the information (sources), is...

...GEN 105 Week 2 Analyzing Internet Sources I have learned that no matter what you do when you are working with internet sources; you need to make sure that they are credible sources. It is very easy to be mistaken with the sources that you are working with. To get caught up with what you are doing, and mistake a bad source for a credible source. I have also learned that you need to make sure you give credit where credit is due. Making sure that you cite your sources is very important. Your websites that you visit need to be good websites as well; they need to be able to give you information that will help you with your paper work. Websites like Wikipedia and YouTube are not necessarily websites that you would use for a college essay paper. You would need to go with the websites that have the .edu and .gov in the URL they are credible websites and have reliable information on their sites! You also need to make sure that you stay away from websites that have blogs and that are trying to sell things to you; these sites are not credible, and will not get you anywhere. The main thing is to make sure that you are double-checking that your sources are credible. Making sure that you cite everything that you do, and you should be fine! What I would have liked to learn in this exercise is mainly how to keep from using bad sources. I mean I know that the exercise cannot tell you everything, but it would have been helpful if it could have touched on it a little more and been a little...

...changing, affecting the credibility of websites used as research material. With the students using the internet and web- based technologies, it is important to have the right innovative tools to gain experience in determining credible information on the websites being researched. Today’s online universities have developed new strategies for determining how to access the credibility of an information source, by creating their own library, which contains’ credible sources. I. Initial Appraisal A. Author The author is Traci Hong; she has a PhD of Communication, M.A. of Communication and B.A, double major; Communication and Biology. Hong’s work is peer reviewed; she has recieved feedback from other professors in the same field. Hong work has a reference list that vouches for her article’s credibility. The article and research done by Hong is considered current and discusses how important Internet and web- based technology is currently being used as a learning tool and how students can determine websites credibility and how the use of Internet is increasing when doing research. Hong name has not been mention in this course, but I have seen her name on other articles on the internet. B. Date of Publication Hong’s article was published in February, 2006 by the Journal of the American Society for Information of Science and Technology. The source is current and can be used when determining the credibility of websites. C. Edition or Revision Hong’s article...

...Analyzing a Web Page Analyzing a Web Page The website I chose is to evaluate is Community Action Committee known as (knoxcac.org.). This website is about helping the Knox County residence get help that they need by putting the information on their website that will guide them in the right direction for assistance in healthcare, housing, and services for children and seniors. According to Widner University and Wolfram Memorial Library, there are four ways to properly analyze a website to make sure that the information that you are getting is legitimate and credible. The first one is checking the Authority of the website. This means that the website should have it clearly posted the person or persons who are responsible for the information that is posted on the website. There should be a name of the person or group and/or some kind of contact information for that person. On the website I chose there is a specific person listed as the Executive contact of the CAC along with individual names, phone and fax numbers, and email contact for each neighborhood. I did not see a copyright date on the website but all the information concerning the webpage is listed such as address, and phone numbers. The second thing that they talked about was accuracy. Making sure that the information is indeed factual as well as the sources being listed is also very important. Including dates that the information was added to the site is also very important. Looking to make sure that the information...

...it makes you have to search for the correct sources and make sure that you're getting all of the correct facts for your research papers. For my personal experience, the process is to do your normal searches, but when you click and look at a link I look for the author of said article or website I'm researching, and making sure that they are a credible source (Dr. PHD, etc.) or if they're from a trust worthy company with a solid knowledge background. A "good" Google search is not the best idea, because there are sites that claim they know their stuff, but in actuality, their facts are either incorrect or made up. Their facts may in fact be correct, but for a different subject that their article is not even about. There are also many sites that can be changed and altered by anyone. There's so many websites that anyone can change because literally everyone has access to change the information to whatever they please, so you never know if the information is truly correct if anyone has permission to change the article. Which is why I look for credible sites with credible authors, companies, or even college sites that have articles for certain subjects. It can take me hours to find two or more credible sources, but that only depends on the topic I am writing...

...The “In” Credible Web: Evaluating the Credibility of MedlinePlus Cecelia Chamberlain College of Nursing Course Number: NR 500 September 2012 The “In” Credible Web: Evaluating the Credibility of MedlinePlus Accessing health information via the Web has become the “In” thing. According to a 2010 survey conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 74% of all U.S. adults are using the Internet, and of those accessing the Web 80% are looking for health information (Fox, 2011). This paper will evaluate the credibility of MedlinePlus at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/. This website was located using the search engine Google and was chosen for its .gov domain. According to Brenner (2005), Web addresses ending in .gov, .edu or .org offer greater authority and are more reliable sources. MedlinePlus is a health information website produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). This site provides a wide variety of health and wellness topics as well as interactive tools designed to educate, inform, and guide consumers and medical professionals on health related issues (NLM, 2012). The following criteria; authority, information, and objectivity, ease of navigation, and privacy and security policies will be used to evaluate and identify MedlinePlus as a credible health information resource. Furthermore, implications to nursing practice will be discussed. Authority Authority is consistently identified in the literature as being of the upmost importance....

...essential skill to understand and master. Credibility of a website is always important, especially when doing academic research or writing academic papers. In fact, credibility is crucial in academia. As you may or may not know, anyone can post information on the Internet. BobJones.com written by Bob Jones might contain information about the Civil War, but how does the reader know that Bob is an expert on the Civil War? Accurately determining the reliability and validity of websites is an essential skill when deciding to use an Internet source in an academic paper. Use the following guidelines when searching Internet sources for information to use in an academic paper: * Use websites that are credible * Use the most current sources possible * Use sources accessed through a university library These elements are discussed in detail below. Questions to Determine Internet Reliability What is the extension? The Web site address usually includes “www” followed by a period (called a dot), followed by an extension name (also called a domain name). The reliability of a website can frequently be determined by the domain or extension name. The most reliable extensions include the following: .edu: a school or other educational institution site .gov: a government site .mil: a military site Three other common extensions may or may not be reliable. Further investigation is needed to determine the reliability of websites with these extensions. .org: a noncommercial site that...

...Evaluating a Website for Credibility Rashida Kapasi Chamberlain College of Nursing August 26, 2014 Evaluating a Website for Credibility A website chosen for the evaluation is KidsHealth.org. The purpose of this website is to provide information about the health of children and teenagers in a manner that is easy to understand. This website claims to be the most-visited site on the Web for information about health, behavior, and development from before birth through the teen years. All the information is divided in four sections, providing information for parents, children, teenagers, and for educators. This website is easy to find through the Google search engine. That is understandable, taking into account the fact that Kids Health gets a million visits on a daily basis. The Web Address of this site follows the HTTP pattern. The uniform resource locator is http://kidshealth.org. The domain of this site is org., meaning that the domain extension is used by a non-profit organization called The Nemours Foundation's Center for Children's Health Media. The rationale behind the selection of the website is verifying of the website’s claims of being the most-trusted source for physician-reviewed information on children's health. Empirical evidence for the decision comes from the online library Caphis, which puts Kids Health in the Top 100 List of “Health Websites You Can Trust”, and Time Lists (Buenchner, 2004) name this site to be among 50 best...

...you assess the value of the information you find on the Internet? How can you be sure that it is reliable and credible? In today’s world just about anyone can post just about anything on the web. It seems like there is a new blog or site popping up every five seconds these days. I assess the value of the information in different ways. Because there is so much information on the Web, good and bad, finding what you want is not an exact science and can be time consuming. Developing a keen sense of the credibility of sources, based on such clues as connection of author to the subject, audience, source of publication, and documentation of supporting evidence, can also help you evaluate print and other types of sources. Though many search engines rank material according to their idea of what is relevant, that doesn't mean the material is relevant to want you want or is reliable. Web sites serve different purposes. There are reliable and unreliable web sites. A personal web site, which expresses the interests and biases of its author, is a legitimate use of a web site, as long as the web site owner is up front about his or her identity. Like any other source, the authority of the author helps determine the value of the information. Be wary of sites which publish information without letting you know if the information is a personal viewpoint. 2. Is the website answers.com a reliable resource for writing an academic paper? Why or why not? My answer to this question is...

...why teens choose to get abortions, but there are only several reliable sources about that topic. It is very important to rely on credible sources. The use of good sources can lead to information that is credible and accurate. If using non-reliable sources about finding information about a specific topic you could be getting all the information wrong because of the non-credible sources that are being used. Because I used reliable sources I was able to come up with the conclusion that the number one reason why teens choose to get abortion is because when they feel pressured they tend to find an escape to the problem, in this case, abortion. A source is more credible if written by someone with a degree or other credentials in the subject of interest. If no author or organization is named, the source will not be viewed as very credible. An example of a good source about the reasons why teens choose abortion is the article “Why Teens Choose Abortion” by Linda Lowent. This article proves to be a reliable source in so many ways. One way is by giving us a publication date. The publication date is not only important but the fact that is recent, April 15, 2011, makes it a more reliable source. Also, the website where this article was published at is known web page which makes it a credible article. The most important evidence that makes this article a credible one is the author. The name of this article’s author is Linda Lowent. Before you decide whether an article is reliable or not, a...

...sure that it is reliable and credible? There are many things you could do to assess information on the Internet. Having reliable information is extremely important when writing a paper or finding research because it is more credible and your know for sure you are passing along the correct information. One thing to look for is if the Internet site has an author and they are qualified for writing the information. You can do this by looking at their biography and looking for information about their education and experiences. It is important to check for a date and whether or not it is decently recent. If there is no date or it is really old, it may no longer be reliable information. If an article has punctuation and spelling errors, the website should not be used. Obviously, the person is not credible. When determining whether the website is credible and reliable, you should look for sources the author may have used. It is important to know where the information came from and whether or not it can be trusted. You should always look at where the information is published. It is good to find sources that came from journals and other scholarly pieces. You could also look at the reviews of the sites and see other people’s experiences on the website. If the information seems biased or opinionated it should not be used. The information should be factual based only, unless you are specifically looking for an opinion about a situation. Generally, if the website ends in .edu or .gov, it is...
