Being a probation officer involves working directly with chosen clients, while they must also prepare reports for the court, investigate offenders and give the judge information about who that offender is. With this process, this allows the judge to manage a fair sentence. Probation officers will conduct random drug tests, monitor their clients and what they do, as well as the family and friends involved with that client. In basic terms, their job is to make sure that their clients are complying with the conditions set to them and that they are restored and behaved in our community after criminal conviction.

To become a probation officer, one must obtain a degree. In this case, it would need to be a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

They represent their clients in the court of law and speak on their behalf. A criminal lawyer must hold a juris doctorate and an attorney’s license in order to practice criminal law. Experience in criminal law is advisable before obtaining a position as a criminal lawyer. Throughout their careers, criminal lawyers often seek out additional training and continuing education programs to sharpen and expand their legal skills. However, significant clinical experience may be equated with some criminal law experience for a recent graduate. Or, participation in internships, volunteer positions or part-time jobs with public defenders and prosecutor offices can be the necessary work experience required. They can either be directly approached by a client or designated by the court of law to do so. Once the attorney has contacted the client, it is his responsibility to extract all the details of the charges filed against the client; collect the information related to the case and then prepare a strong defense that will help acquit the defendant in the court of law. This may sound simpler than it actually is as criminal law itself is quite intricate and difficult to grasp. To build a strong case for his client, a criminal defense attorney has to collect information from a number of sources such as the police, the investigators involved in the case as...

They work with neighborhood associations and religious groups to check up on the behavior of offenders. They ensure that the people they supervise enroll in substance abuse rehabilitation and job training programs, as ordered by the court. It is the probation and parole officer's main goal to keep offenders from repeating past crimes or violating parole and ending up returning to prison. Convicted criminals are often placed on probation in lieu of prison sentences. Individuals who've completed their prison sentences often get placed on parole after being released. While on probation or parole, convicted criminals are required to remain drug free, refrain from committing crimes, and adhere to other requirements. Parole officers have similar responsibilities as probation officers, but parole officers monitor released prison inmates, while probation officers assist individuals serving probation sentences rather than prison sentences. ...college education was very appealing. At the age of 17 I moved in with my now husband who was 25 at the time. He was in college finishing his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. I was a senior in high school. As soon as I finished, with his help I enrolled in the local community college where I finished my general education then transferred to the University of North Texas to study criminal justice. However, I was only there a year when I quit due to being undecided on what I wanted to do with a criminal justice degree. I went to work full time instead. I quickly realized that I was capable of doing so much but needed a college degree to even have a chance unless I wanted to stay at the same place forever. That is when I changed jobs to one that would allow me the flexibility I needed to finish school. That was two years ago. Today I feel better about myself for accomplishing so much. I have learned that I am stronger than I ever realized that once I put my mind to something I will succeed. I have also learned about the criminal justice system and have discovered that I have a passion for juvenile delinquents. I noticed that I would get on my “soap box” when it came to classmates criticizing juvenile delinquents. It is my hope to one day be able to work with juveniles whether it be as a juvenile probation officer or counselor. However, my main goal is become a lawyer. I have a...

In addition to decreased recidivism rates, cognitive behavioral therapy is effective for with both juveniles and adults, offenders who abuse substances and have violent tendencies, as well as probationers, parolees, and inmates. This is incredibly valuable information because probation and parole officers deal with such a variety of clients based on age, substance abuse, violence, and their backgrounds (Clark, 2010). It is extremely important to be aware that there is a counseling method that is known to be successful in all these different categories. The reason being is that many of the clients a probation or parole officer will come in contact with on a daily basis are of various ages, come from many different backgrounds, have substance abuse related problems, and/or have committed violent offenses. It is crucial to know that there is a counseling method that serves to so many types of clients that are seen on a day to day basis. This allows probation and parole officers to create their own personal style around a method known to be effective for a diverse group of clients. Cognitive behavioral therapy is found to be successful in reducing recidivism, which means that long term the clients...

Criminal Justice

...Is the U.S. Criminal Justice System a true system? William H. Watson IV University of Maryland University College Is the U.S. Criminal Justice System a true system? The criminal justice system in the United States (U.S.) is not a true system; or at least not a true functioning system. A true system is a fine tuned process, where all participants involved work towards a common goal. Every transition in a true system, is a smooth change, where no participants in the system will do anything to jeopardize the proper functionality of the next process in that system. This is not the case of the U.S. criminal justice system. The U.S. criminal justice system is comprised of numerous individuals, groups, organizations, and agencies funded by both government and non-government sources. Because, the U.S. criminal justice system is funded from different entities, there are several different agendas being carried out. There are three major components to the administration of the U.S. criminal justice system: the police, the courts, and corrections. In a perfect criminal justice system the police would arrest violators of the law, the courts would prosecute all law violators, and corrections would punish and rehabilitate violators, to integrate them back into society. While this is the formula the U.S. criminal justice system governs itself by, reality shows us that this quite often this is not the case. Only ten percent of court cases ever go to trial, with almost...

Disistance

...| Critically discuss the nature of desistance and evaluate the extent to which current probation practices support desistance. | | | | | | Desistance has many definitions according to numerous theorists. Some definitions are vague. For example, Laub and Sampson explained how Neal Shover (1996) defines desistance as “voluntary termination of serious criminal participation”. Some other definitions are more arbitrary. For instance, Professor Laub and Professor Sampson came across other definitions, such as Farrington and Hawkins (1991) and how they define desistance as having no conviction between the age 21 and 32, following a conviction before 21. Another study they found was that of Weitekamp and Kerner (1994), and this explained how together they have both tried to unravel various workings in the area of desistance. They have defined the desistance as the period of time when the criminal or delinquent actions ends permanently. Comparing this notion, they define suspension as an interruption in offending activities. Laub and Sampson also showed how Maruna (2001), points out that the fore mentioned researchers, in addition to their definitions, view desistance as a developmental progression, and not as a happening; which means the rate of offending recurring decelerates and also becomes far less appealing. In a documentary by Allen Weaver, on desistance, he spoke about Laub and Sampson’s study, about a research that was conducted in the 1940’s as part...
