The Visitor, by Patricia Cresswell, is a short story about a man, who we know by surname as McGill, and his relationship with a little girl who visits him at his cottage. The story discovers how McGill came to meet the girl and how their relationship developed.

The first paragraph begins to set the scene of the story as it describes the setting. “A thin white sun rose over the bleak hills”. This makes us realise that the story takes place at dawn. In addition to this, we become introduced to a certain sense of loneliness as the writer describes the sun as “thin”. By doing this the writer is implying that its light does not reach every corner of the hill. The setting does not seem very cheerful. Among the very bleak landscape stands a cottage which seems very lonely as it is the "only sign of civilization for miles around." The cottage stands "as if anticipating the approach of an intruder." This anticipation indicates the visits of the little girl that come in to the story.
As we continue to read, it comes to light that the Patricia has written this short story from an omniscient point of view meaning that the narrator knows everything about each and every character. In the last paragraph it states: “McGill was angry for the first time in his life”, the narrator would not know this if it was not from an omniscient point of view. In addition to this, we come to notice that the story is mainly made up of narrative prose, with one single line of speech from the girl asking McGill “may I come in?” After that, there is no dialogue. However it may be though that speech may be implied within the last paragraph when McGill goes into the village, but what is said is never written out explicitly. This lack of dialogue, especially in the parts of the story describing the visits from the girl shows how there is a comforting silence between McGill and the girl.

A Critique of the Visitor by Patricia Cresswell

...Critique of The Visitor by Patricia Cresswell The Visitor is an interesting read as there are many interpretations of the characters throughout the text. There are also several features to suggest mystery and imaginative features. The short story opens with the semantic field of cold suggesting that the setting is winter. The omniscient author uses the words “bleak”, “black”, “brittle”, “pale”, “hard” and “dry” ( lines two- four) to convey this feeling. By using these lexis the author creates a setting in which the reader is already querying about the scene. Coupled with the fact that they describe the cottage as being “the only sign of civilization for miles around” (line six- seven) it creates an air of mystery and makes the reader want to move on. The omniscient author then describes McGill. The characterisation of him is fascinating as he is seen as polite, sexual and plagued with issues. The author describes McGill as feeling “ashamed” (line thirty five). This can be for several reasons. One reason is that he has taken an interest to the young girl sexually and he “secretly” smiled “to himself” (line forty one) as he saw what she wore, and that her bare “toes twitched with the warmth of the fire” (line thirty three/four). This then created a bond and “he grew to love her” (forty nine/fifty). This makes the reader question McGill and make them wonder why he is spending time with her and why he could not wait for the time she arrived. It gives the reader a feel that...

...Critique writing - The Visitor This essay will provide a critical view of Patricia Cresswell’s “The Visitor”. It will look at the use of language, point of view, use of imagery, characterisation and setting to name but a few. I will provide my opinions on the piece of writing and explain my reasoning behind this. Cresswell’s use of language in The Visitor strongly suggests to me that McGill is isolated and lonely. The use of the word “frosted” when describing the outside of McGill’s home could be seen as a metaphor for his personality. The writer also states that the “frosted grass” could be “anticipating the approach of an intruder”. The word intruder is a strong choice of word, as opposed to guest or visitor, suggesting that the idea of a visitor is baffling. Another example is shown on line four where the text states McGill’s home is “the only sign of civilization for miles around” and “it occurred to him someone might be outside”. This immediately confirms to the reader that McGill has been alone for quite some time and would not usually expect any visitors. I also feel that the writer’s use of the words “ice cold lips” and “cold as marble” when describing the young girl connects her to McGill as this suggests that she may be lonely too. Cresswell is careful when characterising McGill, I believe he is shown to be a simple man with the best intentions but lacking in social skills due to his environment. This is backed up within the text “she was small and frail… he was...

Therefore, your program’s website plays a very important role in communicating a first impression to families. Many prospective parents use the Internet to help them identify possible early childhood programs in their geographic area, and then choose which programs they would like to visit or learn more about based on the information they find online. This is your opportunity to market your program. An attractive and well-designed website should be easy to read. Visitors to the site should be able to find the information they need quickly, with just a few clicks of a mouse. Please review the following childcare centers’ websites: 1. Bright Horizons 2. Childcare Network For your Final Project, you will create the appearance of a website for your own childcare program and facility using either PowerPoint or Prezi. ...Main Point This article focuses on WorldCom’s culture of ethics and how this culture led to criminal charges by reporting accounting irregularities of $11 billion in 2002. There are many ethical theories from many points of view, but the bottom line of the article is poor ethical cultures and bad accounting practices lead to disruption of performance and in order to move forward there is a need to educate future business leaders to set high ethical standards and goals for themselves and their employees. Critique From a logical standpoint the author discusses business ethics and the ethics at WorldCom. The author presents many facts within the article form an unbiased view and I agree that WorldCom did not take any responsibility for incorporating any of the basic ethical principles; WorldCom leaders ignored any opportunity to do what was morally good and morally right. The author expands on the importance of a code of ethics and culture within an organization which helps teach and remind employees to do the right thing which I strongly agree needs to be a top priority within every organization. But the author also presents the idea that ethical education provides little benefit to strengthen a culture of ethics, which I disagree with. Ethics and culture of character start from the top down and this form of education embeds the ethical culture of the organization. It is also logical that a company with a strong code of ethics will outperform and outlast companies without...

...which opened in 1996 to pre date the existing hotel complex. The idea was to create a form of cave or quarry like structure. Working with the natural surroundings the bath rooms lay below a grass roof structure half buried into the hillside. The Therme Vals is built from layer upon layer of locally quarried Valser Quarzite slabs. This stone became the driving inspiration for the design, and is used with great dignity and respect. “Mountain, stone, water – building in the stone, building with the stone, into the mountain, building out of the mountain, being inside the mountain – how can the implications and the sensuality of the association of these words be interpreted, architecturally?” Peter Zumthor This space was designed for visitors to luxuriate and rediscover the ancient benefits of bathing. The combinations of light and shade, open and enclosed spaces and linear elements make for a highly sensuous and restorative experience. The underlying informal layout of the internal space is a carefully modelled path of circulation which leads bathers to certain predetermined points but lets them explore other areas for themselves. The perspective is always controlled. It either ensures or denies a view. The fascination for the mystic qualities of a world of stone within the mountain, for darkness and light, for light reflections on the water or in the steam saturated air, pleasure in the unique acoustics of the bubbling water in a world of stone, a feeling of warm stones...

Understanding Jazz Audience

...Attendance by Locals and Foreigners: The Case of Padua and Seville” Carlofilippo, Elisabetta and Luisa Palma examine the broad issue of audience development and investigate the visitors’ opinions and behavior in the two museums between 2005 and 2006. The researchers designed a structured questionnaire which included 24 multiple-choice questions and divided into five parts. Apart from using primary data which they collected directly in Padua for three months and spent one month in Seville, they also used the secondary sources of information about museum attendance. The scope of this comparative research relates to the visit experience and motivations of attending by using quantitative research to analyze international comparison of foreign visitors. In their research, it is illustrated that the obtained data and statistical surveys pinpoint the key features of many characteristics, attitudes and behaviors throughout the attendances of the two fine arts museums- Padua and Seville respectively. This paper demonstrates the similarities and differences of the two museums and the econometric analysis on visitors’ loyalty, visit satisfaction and museum exposure. It is helpful that this empirical study contends different aspects between the two museums by conducting comparative research. The main aim of this critique essay will focus on analyzing the two papers’ research method in terms of their research questions and the way of doing organizational surveys. Furthermore, I will evaluate...

There are a few reasons why I feel my communication was effective during our training. During the actual training itself, I could see that my employees were understanding what was being relayed and were able to answer my on the spot questions during the training. Another helpful point was having my own superiors there to critique my training and letting me know how well I was doing. ...Website Critique Name: [ Crispin Misquita ] [ ] [ ] Course: BSA/375 - FUNDAMENTALS OF BUSINESS SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT Date: 09/26/2011 Instructor: KEN MURPHY Manage to focus users’ attention As web-sites provide both static and dynamic content, some aspects of the user interface attract attention more than others do. Obviously, images are more eye-catching than the text — just as the sentences marked as bold are more attractive than plain text. The human eye is a highly non-linear device, and web-users can instantly recognize edges, patterns and motions. This is why video-based advertisements are extremely annoying and distracting, but from the marketing perspective they perfectly do the job of capturing users’ attention. Humanized.com perfectly uses the principle of focus. The only element which is directly visible to the users is the word “free” which works attractive and appealing, but still calm and purely informative. Subtle hints provide users with enough information of how to find more about the “free” product. Focusing users’ attention to specific areas of the site with a moderate use of visual elements can help your visitors to get from point A to point B without thinking of how it actually is supposed to be done. The less question marks visitors have, the better sense of orientation they have and the more trust they can develop towards the company the site represents. In other words: the less thinking needs to happen behind the scenes, the better is...

Critique Report Yahoo Consumer Direct

...Critique Report Yahoo Consumer Direct Was the research well designed? Was it a good research? The research is an example of a good research and well designed as follows. Firstly, the research purpose is clearly defined as a tool to evaluate the effectiveness of Yahoo banner ads from ad exposure to shopping behaviour. The scope is limited to the ad placement on Yahoo only. Secondly, the research procedure is well detailed, e.g. the steps to acquire participants, well informed consent, sampling methods, representativeness and data collection procedures. Other search engine could also conduct similar research under these settings. Thirdly, the research design is well planned with identified constructs like “awareness” and “persuasiveness” of the banner ads. Fourthly, high ethical standards were applied as they already got consent from the Homescan panels to opt for joining the program in which their website visiting record will be tracked. Moreover, the limitation of research is described at the very beginning that the number of internet users are only an estimate. Adequate analysis could be provided as Yahoo can directly obtain figures via the database from ACNielsen. Furthermore, detailed executive summary over 30 pages are compiled after research. The research conclusion is justified as they are drawn from the data collected with no prior assumptions. Finally, Yahoo is an experienced researcher on such kind of purchasing behaviour research as they have conducted research with...
