Cross-Culture Perspective There are many multinational organization that have started within the United States. Most of these companies have started small, and through due diligence they have prospered and grown. Walmart is one of those success stories that was founded by a man named Sam Walton. He was born in the year 1918 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He ended up serving in the military from 1942 to 1945. Once out, he and his wife moved to Newport, Ar. where he started his first variety shop. He then moved his family to Bentonville, Ar. where he then opened Walton's 5 and 10 shop. Due to his success with the 5 and 10 shop, he was inspired and open his first Walmart in 1962. Walmart has been a success from the start, as is apparent by the fact that in just five years from the grand opening Sam Walton opened up twenty-four stores and continued to grow. Walmart had incorporated by 1969 and went public by 1970. Sam Walton believed that his success was due impart to the low prices he offered his clients, as well as the people he employed. He felt that if you treat your employees as partners, then they in turn will treat you as a partner, and will treat the customer much better. Today Walmart lives and breaths by the remarks Sam Walton made during his acceptance of the Presidential Freedom Award in 1992, “if we work together we’ll lower the cost of living for everyone…we’ll give the world an opportunity to see what it’s like to save and have a better life” (Walton, 1992). Today the organization strives to assure all of its associates continue to exemplify Sam Walton’s vision and dream via an ethics policy that promotes a culture of integrity.
