Cultural, Ethnic, and Gender Differences in the Workplace
It is very important for management in the workplace to understand the cultural, ethnic and gender differences of the employees. Diversity in the workplace includes individuals from different religion beliefs, sexes, ages, and environments. Accepting diversity in the workforce is essential for the organization because every individual might bring something beneficial for the business. According to Bell (2007) “As members of these groups represent an increasing proportion of the workforce, the need to consider them and to able to attract and retain workers from nontraditional pools becomes more important”(p.12). There are research projects that have shown that diversity is relevant for everybody in the workplace.
Every culture has specific characteristics that distinguish one for another. Managers need to be aware of the cultural differences that exist between members of each culture. These differences are manifested through language, customs, foods, and clothing. For example, in the Hispanic community, “La cena de nochebuena” (Christmas Eve’s family dinner) is the most important event during Christmas celebration. During this special occasion, family and close friends celebrate together with typical foods and delicious deserts usually eaten at midnight. However, the Christmas day is the most important time for the American family to get together during these festivities. Knowing these traditions will help the managers to achieve fairness during the preparation of the schedules.

Race and ethnicity are two different terms that are often interchanged. According to Bell (2007) “Ethnicity refers to a shared national origin or a shared cultural heritage among people” (p.6) .In the other hand, race refers to a person’s physical appearance, like hair, skin color or facial structure. For example, Hispanics as an ethnic group consist of people from various races. There is Black and White Hispanic. Also, the Hispanic community is constituted from people of various nationalities being the Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans the major groups in the United Sates. According to Bell (2007) “The rapid growth of the Hispanic population makes the need for more bilingual employees and the need to recognized bilingualism as a compensable skill increasingly important…employers should recognize its existence and attempt to address it positively” (p.147).I also believe that multilingual workers should be compensated. I am a nurse working in an intensive care unit at a large hospital in Florida. We attend a large Hispanic population and I am often being asked to translate to Spanish speaking families, but in my annual evaluation I do not get a raise for my work of translator because they do not consider it as a merit.
Gender differences are other important matters in the workplace. Gender differences arises from stereotypes relate to sexual role. Women are often perceived as the family caregiver at home and are “viewed as uncommitted workers…and as lacking in leadership, management, and decision –making skills” (Bell, 2007, p.250). Managers can address this problem through training programs to increases awareness on gender-related concerns. Managers also should create programs that support the women at the workplace, like childcare center and other initiatives.
People who do not understand or speak English may feel anxious or angry by not being able to communicate or do things correctly as well as people with different education and ethnic background may be affected by their lack of opportunities surrounding them. By being lefty for a day and not be able to use my dominant right hand, I was extremely anxious and everything seeming outward and difficult to complete , however; I understood that with patience and perseverance I was going to be able to complete every single task at home. The most difficult task for me was the use of the computer and the mouse; also it was very challenging to drive because all the controls are locate in the right side of the car. It was very difficult but not impossible at all. Therefore; having respect and acceptance of difference ethics groups among us is very essential for the success on the work place, as compare to be lefty for a day.
