Dag Hammarsköld once said, “The present moment is significant, not as the bridge between past and future, but by reason of its contents, which can fill our emptiness and become ours, if we are capable of receiving them.” The Swedish culture is a lot like this quote, they take advantage of every moment that passes even if it’s not so significant, focus on the present not the past or the future.
In Sweden there is a high preference for a loosely-knit social framework in which individuals are expected to take care of themselves and their immediate families. In individualistic societies the employers and employees relationship is a contract based on mutual advantage, hiring and promotion and the decisions are supposed to be based on merit only.
The Swedish culture is more of a low-context culture, meaning they place less emphasis on personal relationships and more emphasis on verbalized, explicit explanations. Swedish individuals make criticism private for distinction. They believe when you make criticism public it is embarrassing.
Also, Sweden is a low-distance culture, where the power is evenly distributed throughout the citizens. In Sweden a person is expected to select friends and romantic partners not on the basis of class or culture but on the basis of such individual factors as personality, and appearance. Swedish individuals are expected to confront friends, their partner, and even their supervisor assertively; it’s based on a general feeling of equality that is consistent with assertive behavior.
The Swedish lifestyle is composed of the love of nature, good housing, environmental thinking and lots of other cultural things – all tied up with awareness of health and a strong sense of equal opportunity. They are considered a high ambiguity-tolerant culture. Efficiency is shared with a laid-back attitude, and old traditions are combined with the openness of new technologies and other things. The sense of heritage is mixed with open-mindedness for other cultures, due to the fact that one-fifth of the Swedish population has roots in other countries. Swedes travel a great deal, and speak other languages to be able to communicate with their extended families in other countries.
Sweden is a short-term orientation, they generally exhibit great respect for traditions, strong social pressure to “keep up with the Joneses”, impatience for achieving quick results, and a strong concern with establishing the truth.
Swedish people are classified as indulgent individuals. Indulgent societies maintain a more relaxed attitude in which practice counts more than principles and deviance from the normal is more easily tolerated. In societies exhibiting restraint, people believe there should be no rules more than what are necessary and if they are ambiguous or do not work they should be abandoned or changed. In Sweden, schedules are flexible, hard work is undertaken when necessary but not for its own sake, precision and punctuality do not come naturally, and innovation is not seen as threatening.
Finally, Sweden is a high-ambiguity-tolerant culture. They don’t feel threatened by unknown situations; uncertainty is a normal part of life, and they accept it as it comes. The Swedish culture is based ‘lagom’, which means not too noticeable, and everything is taken in moderation. Lagom ensures that everybody has enough and nobody goes without. Lagom is enforced in society by the “Jante Law” which should keep people ‘in place’ at all times. It is a fictional law and a Scandinavian concept which counsels people not to boast or try to lift themselves above others. Sweden’s prefer vague assignments without timetables.
In conclusion, Sweden is very diverse with their culture and how they treat things, and each other. They are flexible with their lives and they don’t take it for granted, Sweden’s live for the moment that they are in. Swedish folks live for themselves and don’t worry about how other people are living their lives. They are generally laid back and go with the flow.

Business Communication Between People with Different Cultural Backgrounds

...researchers have emphasised the importance of awareness of different cultural norms as globalisation has brought about a growing trend to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds. This paper argues for a revaluation of how we approach the topic of business communication and for greater emphasis on successful business communication as the goal of better understanding in global business setting. The ideas which are presented in this paper have been derived over a period of two years of our own research and through the reading of research literature. The research to be discussed in the paper is connected to one of the major research lines at Széchenyi István University, titled The dialogue of professional, organisational and national cultures. The purpose of the present paper is to present the results of a survey conducted with professionals who communicate with foreign business partners. The data were gathered by means of a questionnaire. At the root of the argument is the hypothesis that communication rules and norms between people with different cultural background have altered and different cultures have differing values, perceptions and philosophies. The paper will conclude that individuals working in international business setting are affected by more than one culture at a time − even if by varying amounts – and special attention should be devoted...

Analytic Approaches To Personality Paper

...single explanation for how personality emerges and the personality differences between people of different cultures, ages, genders, etc, but theoretical approaches are a starting point to begin to understand it. There are many different theoretical approaches but this paper will focus on the trait approach and the cultural approach to personality. Trait theorists believe that the traits that people have are evolved, heritable, and consistent across all cultures, as well as stable and consistent over time and across situations. In contrast, cultural psychologists argue that culture influences how individuals differ from one another. They argue that there are a lot of personality differences between cultures and that it is the culture and upbringing that causes these differences. There are two main cultural categories- individualistic cultures and collectivistic cultures. These two cultural groups have values on the opposite side of the spectrum and have very distinct characteristics in personality. Individualistic cultures, such as the United States and Canada, value the individual self over groups and relationships. There is a bigger emphasis put on personal achievement and personal rights. Collectivistic cultures, such as Asia and Mexico, value group and...

Indian Culture

...Abstract Cultural difference is a driving factor in the development of HRM polices. In order for organizations to be effective globally they must take the time and do the homework to understand the culture of the countries they want to do business in. This paper discusses some detail Hofstede’s theory of cultural dimensions and how understanding the dimensions and as they relate to a specific culture can assist in determining a strategy for designing HRM policies to fit a particular countries culture. Although this paper will focus on India, you will be able to get a good idea of how the theory can be applied to any country with proper research of that countries culture. What is the definition of culture? It sounds like a very simple question, if you search the Internet, read books, talk to different people you will get different responses. However, if you pay close attention the answer is basically the same. To simplify things for the purpose of this paper I will use Merriam Webster Dictionary definition of culture: culture is the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time a particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, art, etc. a way of thinking, behaving, or working that exists in a place or organization (such as a business). From an HR/operations perspective understanding cultural differences is key to success in a global organization. This paper will focus on the Indian culture and the differences in US culture and the impacts...

There are some uncommon things in previous years that emerge because of globalization such as: the multicultural organization, branches operates in far countries from the original, etc. Approaching these two phenomena needs good strategies since with the variation of culture, all practices may vary along with the HRM practices. Several literatures are reviewed. All of them reached the same result that foster the claim of: diverse culture will have a huge impact on the HRM practices. Cultural Differences

...Cultural Differences Christina Bacon Psych/535 March 16, 2015 Cindy Ojeda Cultural Differences There are different cultures that come into people’s lives and into the United States every day. Different cultures is what makes the world an interesting place to live, whether it be a person’s gender identity or their cultural identity, people tend to judge others on their gender and their cultural identity. This essay will discuss the multicultural concepts on both gender identity and cultural identity and will talk about understanding the cultural differences. Gender identity Dictionary.com (2015) defines gender identity as an inner sense of a person and whether or not they are male or female. This identity usually happens during early childhood and as a result of how the child’s parents raise them and the social influences that happen during puberty by the changes in hormones. When children reach their teen years they start to feel differently about themselves, teens ask themselves if they were actually supposed to be female instead of male and vice versa, and when others hear about it then that is where the differences come from. In the transgender culture they are accepted because other teens and young adults like them have gone through the same things, but in other cultures they are looked down on. In our culture we are called transgender or homosexual or heterosexual, etc. but in the world of the Native American they are called two-spirits. According to Jacobs...

The purpose of this study is to test the validity of the “culture-specific” argument as an explanatory construct for explaining quality management. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected in 2006 as part of the IV iteration of the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey. The methodology involved the use of a self-administered questionnaire to director/head of operations/manufacturing in best practice firms within the sector of firms classified by ISIC codes (rev.3.1) Divisions 28-35. Communication Opinion

...Communication Opinion Paper HCS 320 April 21, 2014 Communication Opinion Paper What is communication? Communication could be described in many of ways. One of the best definitions of communication is that it is a “process of understanding and sharing meaning” (du Pré, 2010). Communication is not one stagnant event that occurs. There are elements involved within it that leads to a specific meaning that is shared between the individuals. Being able to communicate effectively helps perop to obtain a better understanding of the person or situations. This paper will cover the elements of basic communication, how the elements differ from the basic rules of health care communication, providers and their communication with the patient, and cultural differences within communication. Effective Communication As mentioned earlier, communication is a process. The individuals involved in communication realize that it is an ongoing situation for each person to obtain an understanding between them as well as the environment that surrounds them. This process would include a receiver, sender, message, channel and feedback. Effective communication should also include clear and concise information and contain the adequate amount of information needed. Being able to communicate effectively would help a person to relay both negative and positive information and being able to do so without destroying any trust or creating a conflict. One basic element of effective communication is active...

Culture Dimensions and Barriers in Today’s Business World

...MGMT 501 Paper Assignment Topic The paper should focus on a specific behavioral sciences issue related to the topics covered in the course. The course and textbook present an array of topics from which to choose. For example, topics that fall within the domain of motivation, leadership, group dynamics, organizational culture, and job satisfaction, to name a few, are important, broad areas that have been the subject of much research and discussion in the study of behavior in organizations. When working with such broad topic areas, it is important to narrow the focus of the paper to a specific model or approach. Topics such as the labor market for IT workers, changing demographics in the workforce, or the prevalence of downsizing in the U.S., while interesting, do not necessarily qualify as course-related organizational behavior topics. However, organizational commitment of downsized employees, or motivational strategies for the management of generation Xers, etc., may well be appropriate topics for this course paper. Students may work with a partner (or even a small interest group), and this partnership entails sharing a general topic area and several research references. However, each student should determine his or her own perspective on the topic. For example, one student in a pair can take one position on a paper, while the other adopts an opposing stance (i.e., point-counterpoint). Or one student can research one component of a larger topic, while the other...

Communication Opinion Paper

...Running head: COMMUNICATION OPINION PAPER Communication Opinion Paper Helen R. Caraballo University of Phoenix Communications Opinion Paper Communication is a basic function of living. Communication happens with words, without words, using symbols, gestures, sounds, and drawings. Sometimes getting the idea across to the receiver of the communication is a difficult task when there are communication barriers such as different languages, cognitive ability, and disability. Communication is an essential tool that needs constant use and refinement to be effective for the user and receiver. In this paper, the basic elements of communication, health care communication, consumer communication, and cultural differences in communication will be the topics of discussion. Effective communication is very important. In a health care setting, it is important to listen to one another and understand what is being expressed. The basic elements of communication are listening, speaking the wants and needs, and making eye contact with the other person. I believe that effective communication incorporates these skills because you need to use the proper communication skills in order to be productive in the conversation. In the health care field I do not see how the communication in basic elements of effective communication differs because all of the same rules apply. In order for your doctor to be able to treat you for an illness or ailment you have to be willing to...

Traditional and Nontraditional Culture Paper

...Traditional and Nontraditional Culture Paper Culture is a daily influence and important to values, beliefs, and behaviors. There are two types of cultural influences. Those cultural influences are labeled as a traditional culture or nontraditional. A traditional culture is influenced by traditions, rules, symbols, and principles. Such influences in a traditional culture are rooted in past influences. Nontraditional cultures are often referred to as modern and are often influential through principles, ideas, and practices (Shiraev & Levy, 2010). To understand the difference between a traditional and nontraditional this paper examines a culture in each classification. The Amish culture consists of values, beliefs, and behaviors that are traditional whereas the American culture is influenced by values, beliefs, and behaviors that are nontraditional. Cultural influences are important to perception and actions taken on a daily basis. Differences Between Values of the Amish and American Culture The main difference between the Amish culture and American culture is individualism. America is steeped in an individualist society. Americans take pride in our churches, our children, and our jobs. Whenever there is an achievement, we are taught to seek pride in that achievement. The Amish work together as a community, and are mainly agricultural. Even in dress the Amish are communal. The status is shown through dress, such as marital status and church commitment (O’Neil, 1997). While American’s...
