The world has come from IQ (Intelligence Quotient) to EQ (Emotional Intelligence) and finally CQ (Cultural Intelligence). In their article titled Cultural Intelligence, Christopher Earley and Elaine Mosakowski define CQ as the “natural ability to interpret someone’s unfamiliar and ambiguous gestures in just the way that person’s compatriots and colleagues would, even to mirror them.” Prior to defining CQ, the two authors described how acrididae, the primary family of grasshoppers, are perceived differently from culture to culture. They explain that because a grasshopper, “a lowly insect,” is perceived differently, there should be no surprises that “human actions, gestures, and speech patterns” that one experiences can be widely interpreted, misunderstood, and at times make “cooperation impossible.” Thus culture, as defined by Martin & Nakayama, is “learned patterns of behavior and attitudes shared by a group.” …show more content…
However, an American who has high CQ can asses that certain gestures are common for people from such areas. In fact, Kwintessential Culture Guide highlights that Italians maintain eye contact and they are extremely expressive. They use their faces and hands to demonstrate their point. They often raise their voices so that they can be heard over other speakers; it’s not because they are angry as it would interpreted here in the US. According to Kwintessentials, Italians also enjoy being in close proximity to the people they are talking to; in American culture however, that is considered encroachment of personal

Synthesis Essay: I Am An Asian American Teenager

...Synthesis Essay I am an anomaly! I’m an American teenager who lives in a Vietnamese home. Growing up as an Asian American in Hawaii and trying to balance out Vietnamese and American culture at the same time shapes the world I see today. I had to balance out many things including language, tradition and cuisine. My culture does have an impact my perspective on this world because of my cuisine, parents, and labels. Firstly, my culture affects the way I view the world because of cuisine. Cuisine means a style of cooking from one’s culture. According to Source B, “Ethnic recipes throw me into the same sort of quandary as that proposed “interracial” box on the census form.” I can relate to this because back in 5th grade, my teacher told us that on the last day of school we would have a cultural potluck and it left me confused because when my dad cooks he likes to mix Vietnamese and American cuisine when he was cooks. So having two different cultures with different foods changed my views on other culture’s styles of cooking from my experiences as a bicultural teenager. Secondly, my culture influences my point of view towards the society that I live in because of my parents. When my parents first arrived in America they had to work hard so that I could receive the luxuries that they did not have when...

How Does the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Promote Learning?

...How does the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme promote learning? The International Baccalaureate Diploma programme was established to provide ‘the educational needs of globally mobile students’ (IBO 2012 p.3), allowing them to gain a recognised qualification to allow them access to further education in universities around the world. Beyond these very broad objectives the initial programme was based on three fundamental principles, which outlined the IB’s approach to learning: * to provide a broad education, establishing the basic knowledge and critical thinking skill * to develop international understanding and citizenship * to provide choice within a balanced curriculum to allow the students interests to be fulfilled (ibid). The aim as Peterson has suggested was to not to just provide a place for the ‘acquisition of general knowledge, but the development of the general powers of the mind to operate in a variety of ways of thinking’ (IBO 2012 p.4). This is expressed further in the IB’s Mission Statement which states its desire to create a better world through education, which it claims can best, be achieved through international-mindedness. It adds to this by stating that ‘the International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect (ibid). As with the other programmes, the PYP and MYP, the DP ‘promotes the education...

Study

...In my years of teaching composition to college students, I have discovered that one of the main obstacles to their learning the skills I teach is their conviction that those skills are nice to have, but not essential--unless, of course, they plan a career that is likely to require them to write a lot. Most students would like to write easily and well, but they do not feel an overwhelming need to. As it happens, however, writing essays is one of the best ways to develop the mental skills necessary for learning and thinking. Despite the widely held belief that human beings are rational animals, the fact is that we are no such thing--at least not naturally. What we are is capable of rational thought. We have the capacity to learn how to reason, but that capacity does not come to fruition without careful nurturing. Just as the skilled athlete has, through diligent effort and application, honed physical capacities that are inherent but not well developed in most human beings, so the skilled thinker has studied and trained himself to apply mental skills in a manner beyond the reach of most untrained minds. The exercise of rational thought or procedure to analyze a subject and to express in an orderly way the judgments arrived at through such analysis is called "discourse." Writing which aims to arrive at an understanding of a subject--or to make such an understanding possible for the reader by leading him through the steps of rational analysis of that subject--is...

Art Of Sentencing

...Intuitive synthesis has had its long history of dominance within the common law world. It is known as the ‘art of sentencing’, by taking account into all factors within a case and by applying a judicial officer’s own intuition, determining and concluding with an appropriate sentencing outcome. This sentencing methodology over time, has attracted many criticisms, as judges and magistrates may be personally biased and influenced by different cultures, which are said to have caused the inconsistency within the criminal justice system. If we are placing the importance of judicial discretion on a full spectrum, the concepts of intuitive synthesis with high importance, and mandatory sentencing marked with least, will possess their positions at...
