Cyber Bullying in Mass Media
The internet can reach a worldwide audience and it has made it easier for people to communicate from around the world. Internet has given a way to communicate or broadcast news, and other types of information worldwide. With so many advancements in technology people tend to abuse and misuse it. People tend to blame technology for the ways it’s used against others. Violent behavior has been around longer than technology. This paper will look at the link of cyber bullying in mass media.
As technology grows so do the ways people abuse others with the use of technology. With so many advancement in technology social networking sites is a huge advancement. Social networking sites superseded the email sites on the net. According to the textbook, “These communities are often defined by common interests such as hobbies, professions, or schools, but as the name suggests, users usually visit them to socialize; once there, however, users can gravitate toward groups, more specific categories of interest-bound socializers.” (2012, p.271) Some of these social media networking sites are; Classmates, Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter. Many of these social networking sites are mainly used by teenagers. With technology growing at a fast pace teenagers have access to this entire social networking site through many plethora of technology devices. “A decade ago, technology had not advanced to the point where cyber bullying was even an issue. Times have changed, however, and, unfortunately, kids are keeping pace with the changes much more readily than adults.”(Kowalski, Limber, Agatston. p.41-42) Bullying is being a problem longer than technology was available. “Although the advent of cyber technologies has provided new arenas in which children and youth can bully each other, the phenomenon of bullying is hardly new.”(Kowalski, Limber, Agatston. p.17) According to the book Cyber Bullying: Bullying in the Digital Age, “Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power or strength (Nansel et al., 2001; Olweus, 1993a). Sometimes this imbalance involves differences in physical strength between children, but often it is characterized by differences in social power or status. Because of this imbalance of power or strength, a child who is being bullied has a difficult time defending himself or herself.”( Kowalski, Limber, Agatston. p.17) In the book Banishing Bullying Behavior: Exploring the Culture of Pain, Rage and Revenge, “The frequency of bullying was higher among sixth through eighth grade students than among ninth and tenth-grade students. The study found that both bullies and those bullied demonstrate poorer psychosocial functioning than their noninvolved peers. As to the prevalence of bullying, the report extrapolated that 5,736,417 youth are involved in some type of moderate or frequent bullying.”(Fried & Sosland p.37) Teenagers have taken bullying to the next level of violence.
Teenagers are using the social networking sites to continue the harassment against those scare defenseless teenagers. It’s not only enough to harass them during school now they are taking it to the cyber world. According to Bullying Statistics website, “Cyber bullying affects many adolescents and teens on a daily basis. Cyber bullying involves using technology, like cell phones and the Internet, to bully or harass another person”( http://www.bullyingstatistics.org) Bullying has advance that teenagers are using cell phones and other methods to continue their bullying even after school is out. Besides all the technology being used they are using social media networks to continue the harassments. Victims are also using these media avenues to either confront their aggressors or to write their suicide notes. Victims use this as a mean to reach out for help and when they can’t get anyone to hear their cry end up taking their lives. According to the Bullying Statistics website, “Cyber bullying is a form of teen violence that can do lasting harm to young people. Bullying statistics show that cyber bullying is a serious problem among teens.” (http://www.bullyingstatistics.org)
In conclusion, people abuse technology and its advancements in order to satisfy their needs. Mass media is being used to intimidate and harm others for their gratification. Kids are dying due to other kids bullying them through text messages, Facebook, MySpace and other social network sites. It’s hard to control young people in this fast growing technology world. Technology has become a necessity and how can it be taken away from the young teenagers when it’s required for school in most cases. With so many advancements in technology the people have to educate themselves in order to keep up with all this technology. Educating parents will help prevent from children taking their lives due to cyber bullying and help those teenagers get the help they need. The help should be for the victims as well for the bully. The bully might have issues that might be triggering this type of behavior and with help it can help others as well.

Media and Its Responsibilities

...Mass Media: A platform to give strength to the weak or a loaded gun in the hands of humanity? “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth…because they control the minds of the masses” (Malcom X, 2012). Media has responsibilities and these responsibilities need to be clarified and upheld by society. Unfortunately, media today does not abide by moral standards, which in turn sends mixed messages to our society. Often times these messages are demoralizing, desensitizing, and false. Young people and adults alike are trying to navigate through their lives and through the world with a broken compass. The role media plays in issues such as self-worth, bullying, and suicide need to be addressed and revised. I will discuss media and its role and responsibility through the perspective of both a classical and contemporary ethical theory. The classical theory that will be discussed is virtue ethics, which is the study of the virtuous character of a person (Mosser, 2010, p.1.7). The contemporary theory that will be discussed is emotivism, which is basing one’s moral decisions on one’s feelings and emotions (Mosser, 2010, p.1.8). Concluding, I will discuss which theory is closer to my own personal view and why I chose that particular theory. While freedom of speech and personal connection are very important, age appropriate moral standards should be upheld in the media because media plays a significant role in suicide, bullying, and self-worth. According to Mosser (2010)...

Cyber Terrorism

...Miller 18 April 2014 Cyber Terrorism in the Age of Modern Technology In June of 1983 a movie produced by MGM called, “WarGames” (1-1983) set off one of the most intriguing films based in what was considered the beginning of the age of home based computers. WarGames despite the obvious age of the technology, gives us an inside look into its paranoid Cold War opening tensions to the staggering moral climax. Directed by John Badham, this cyber-espionage thriller might also be considered a blueprint in cyber terrorism today. In 1995 some 12 years later another movie directed by John Badham called, “The Net” (2-1995) would give us another look into the emerging age of cyber terrorism. A computer programmer stumbles across a disk containing confidential information, then has her not so secured computer hacked into by a company owned by Gregg Microsystems. In the turn of events to follow, she has all of her personal information, history and financial records deleted, then to her surprise, later finds out that her identity is replaced to reflect that she is known as a criminal. Technology in the next 30 years will become more advanced and with it comes a plague of security threats the world has never seen before. The nostalgia of 5½ inch Floppy Discs, Commodore 64s, Apple II and Atari 800 computers being connected to by way of voice synthesizers, 300 baud acoustic couplers, mass prefix dialers, will be everything needed for anyone to start their own cyber terrorism business....

Social Media and Its Effects on People

...Name: Ayeza Ali Class: WRT 101 Professor: Dr. Drozd Date: 12/03/13 Social Media: A Path to Societal Decadence? With the public promulgation of the internet in the wake of 1990’s, a new era dawned upon humanity. What once used to be a time of familial gathering after dinner to savor stories from the past became the internet surfers lone time. Today, as one strolls along roadside cafés, subway trains, or sits at the campus cafeteria, the so called “social arenas”, all that he’d come across are familiar faces entangled in a world of their own. Headphones covering their ears and faces lit with the bright glare from their electronic devices, they have isolated themselves from society. The social engineers say that we are more “connected” to everyone with the help of the social media, but sadly the truth is that we may have a thousand friends on facebook, but at the end of the day we are still alone, sitting at some Starbucks, head buried in our laptops, scared to even talk to the person sitting right next to us. The foremost predicament that one faces at the hands of social media is unwanted exposure, little known fact is that we have almost next to no control over the information we share over social networking websites such as Facebook, My Space or Hi5. Although the websites do accommodate privacy settings but these settings can be easily over-ridden or bypassed by experienced computer hackers in a matter of seconds. Leaving most users highly susceptible to identity...

Examine How the Media Causes Crime -21 Marks.

...Examine how the media causes crime -21 Marks. We live today in a media- saturated society. The media are all around us and crime is the central theme of their output, both fiction and non-fiction. Crime and deviance make up a large percentage of news coverage. For example, Richard Ericson et al’s study of Toronto found that 45-71% of quality press and radio news was about various forms of deviance and its control, while Williams and Dickinson found British newspapers allocate up to 30% of their news space to crime. However, many question whether media causes criminality. There are frequent ways in which the media might possibly cause crime and deviance and this includes the glamorisation of offending. As we have seen, the media overstates the amount of violent and unusual crime, and they exaggerate the threats of certain groups of people becoming its victims, such as young women and the elderly. Hence, there is a concern that the media may be misleading the public’s impression of crime and causing an impractical fear of it. Research evidence to some degree supports the view that there is a link between media use and fear of crime. For example, in the USA, Gerbner et al found that heavy users of television (over four hours a day) had greater levels of fear of crime. However, the existence of such correlations doesn’t verify that media viewing causes fear. For example, it may be that those who are already afraid of going out at night watch more TV just because they stay in more...
